How to Fix the “Something Happened” Error in Windows 11

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Something happened on our end. Try again later” is a generic Microsoft Store message, not a single Windows 11 error. First record the complete message, any numeric code, the affected app, and whether you were installing, updating, or downloading a game. Then work from low-risk checks to Store repair, package re-registration, Gaming Services repair, and finally Windows component repair.

This guide covers the Microsoft Store installation or update error. Windows Hello, Windows Update, activation, and S mode can show similar wording but require different procedures.

Identify the failure before changing Windows

The same wording can appear with different error codes—or with no code at all. Microsoft Q&A examples document this variation: one Store case and another Store case. Take a screenshot if the code disappears, and run winver to record your Windows version and build.

  • One app fails: check its requirements, device compatibility, ownership or subscription, age and regional restrictions, and whether it is already installed from another source.
  • Several apps fail: investigate Store cache, account, network, updates, registration, and Windows files.
  • Only Xbox, Game Pass, or games fail: use the Gaming Services branch below.
  • The Store will not open: start with wsreset.exe, then Repair and Reset.

Codes such as 0x80070005, 0x80073CF9, 0x80073CFE, and 0x80072F8F have different possible causes. Preserve the exact code and search it in Microsoft Support rather than assuming every code has the same fix.

Try the low-risk checks first

Install Windows and Store updates

  1. Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates, then Download & install when offered.
  3. Restart if Windows requests it.
  4. Open Microsoft Store, select Library, and choose Get updates.

Microsoft documents the current Windows 11 path at Settings > Windows Update.

Correct time, region, and network settings

  1. Go to Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
  2. Turn on Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically where available, then select Sync now.
  3. Open Settings > Time & language > Language & region and confirm the country or region.
  4. Disconnect a VPN temporarily. For Settings > Network & internet > Proxy, disable a manually configured proxy unless your organization requires it.
  5. If you use a work or school network, test a different connection or phone hotspot. Policy, proxy authentication, or firewall rules may intentionally block Store traffic.

Incorrect clocks and regions can interfere with secure connections, licensing, and app availability. VPN or IPv6-related fixes reported in community discussions are not universal Microsoft diagnoses; do not disable IPv6 as a routine step.

Refresh the Microsoft account session

  1. Open Microsoft Store and select the account icon.
  2. Choose Sign out, restart Windows, then sign in with the account that owns the app or game.
  3. Try the installation again.

Reset Microsoft Store safely

Clear the Store cache with wsreset.exe

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter wsreset.exe and press Enter.
  3. Wait for the blank Command Prompt window to close and Microsoft Store to open.
  4. Retry the download or update.

This clears Store cache; it does not uninstall Windows or delete your installed applications. Microsoft community guidance recommends it for Store cache failures: see the documented example. If nothing appears, restart and run it once more, or continue to Repair and Reset rather than repeatedly launching it.

Use Repair, then Reset

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Older builds may say Apps & features.
  2. Search for Microsoft Store, select its three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options.
  3. Select Repair, test the Store, and then select Reset only if the error remains.

Repair attempts to fix the app while retaining more of its data. Reset clears Store app data and can require you to sign in again; it is not a Windows reinstall. The menu wording varies by Windows 11 release.

Re-register Microsoft Store only after Repair and Reset

Use an administrator account for this advanced step.

  1. Right-click Start and open Terminal (Admin) or PowerShell (Admin).
  2. Run:
Get-AppXPackage *WindowsStore* -AllUsers |
  ForEach-Object {
    Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)AppXManifest.xml"
  }
  1. Restart Windows and test Microsoft Store.

PowerShell can report errors for a package that is missing or already registered. That does not automatically mean the command damaged Windows. Avoid making the broader command that re-registers every AppX package your first choice; it affects many applications and can generate warnings. If you try it as a last advanced fallback, back up first.

If only Xbox or game installations fail

Do not remove Gaming Services for an ordinary Store app. For Xbox, Game Pass, or Store game failures, Microsoft Community Support documents this targeted sequence:

Rank #2
Microsoft Windows 11 PRO (Ingles) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB Flash Drive
  • MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
  1. Open an administrator PowerShell or Terminal window.
  2. Run:
get-appxpackage Microsoft.GamingServices | remove-AppxPackage -allusers
  1. Open the Gaming Services Store page with:
start ms-windows-store://pdp/?productid=9MWPM2CQNLHN
  1. Install Gaming Services, run wsreset.exe, restart Windows, and retry the game.

This removes and reinstalls game infrastructure and can affect Xbox installations, so use it only when the symptom is game-related. The command and product ID are shown in Microsoft Community guidance.

Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

Run these in order from Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin):

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

After DISM finishes, run:

sfc /scannow

DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses; SFC checks protected system files. Either scan can remain at one percentage for several minutes, so do not close the window. Restart after both complete and test the Store. If corruption is reported but the Store still fails, continue to account and service diagnostics rather than repeatedly changing system folders.

Use a second Windows account as a diagnostic

Create or use another local Windows account and test Microsoft Store there.

  • It works in the new account: the original profile’s cache, permissions, or account-token data may be damaged. Move files and confirm the new profile is usable before considering removal of the old one.
  • It fails in both accounts: a system-wide, network, Store-service, licensing, or server-side problem is more likely.

Last resort: an in-place Windows 11 repair install

Use this only after the local fixes above and after backing up important files. Microsoft’s download page listed Windows 11 2025 Update, version 25H2, as current on August 18, 2026; release labels can change. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page for the current ISO and architecture guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Download an official Windows 11 ISO matching your edition and language.
  2. Mount the ISO from within your running Windows installation.
  3. Run setup.exe.
  4. When setup asks what to keep, select Keep personal files and apps.
  5. Proceed only after verifying that option, then allow setup to restart the PC.

This is different from booting from USB and choosing a clean install. The wrong option can remove applications, settings, or files. Microsoft’s current Installation Assistant instructions list x64 requirements and 9 GB of free space; Windows on Arm users must use the Arm64-specific guidance rather than assuming x64 tools apply. Microsoft also warns that unsupported hardware can have compatibility and update-support limitations.

When to stop troubleshooting

If the Store still fails after the appropriate branch, capture the message, code, app name, Windows build, and whether another network or account changes the result. Check Microsoft service-health and support channels before making more invasive changes; a licensing, publishing, or broader service incident can affect one app while the Store itself remains browseable.

  • Contact the app publisher for one-app compatibility, licensing, or package failures.
  • Ask your employer or school administrator about policy, Intune, proxy, or firewall restrictions on managed PCs.
  • Restore any temporarily changed proxy, VPN, or security settings immediately after testing.

Avoid registry cleaners, driver-updater bundles, paid “PC repair” utilities, and casual deletion of SoftwareDistribution or catroot2. Those actions are not required for a Store-only symptom and can create new problems.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does wsreset.exe delete installed apps?

No. It clears Microsoft Store cache. You may still need to sign in again after a separate Store Reset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I disable antivirus to fix this error?

Not as a standard fix. If security software is suspected, perform only a brief, controlled test according to its vendor’s instructions and restore protection immediately.

Why do games fail while ordinary Store apps work?

Xbox and Game Pass installations depend on Gaming Services. Use the Gaming Services branch rather than re-registering every AppX package.

Can a work or school PC block Microsoft Store?

Yes. Group Policy, Intune, proxy authentication, firewall rules, or organization licensing can override consumer troubleshooting. Contact the administrator.

The Bottom Line

Start with updates, clock and region checks, account and network tests, then run wsreset.exe and use Store Repair before Reset. Re-register the Store, repair Gaming Services, run DISM and SFC, and reserve an in-place repair install for failures that remain after you have preserved the error code and ruled out account, policy, and service problems.
