Try a different sign-in method or contact your system administrator” means Windows or Microsoft Entra ID has rejected the type of logon you attempted. It does not, by itself, prove that your password is wrong. Start by identifying where the message appears—at the PC, in Remote Desktop, on an Azure VM, or on a Microsoft Entra-joined device—because each route uses different permissions and authentication policies.
Where are you seeing the error?
Windows distinguishes local, domain, network, and remote-interactive logons. A system can recognize an account but still refuse a particular kind of sign-in because the account lacks the required right or an identity policy blocks that method. See Microsoft’s overview of Windows logon scenarios.
| Where the error appears | Start by checking |
|---|---|
| Keyboard and monitor connected to the PC | Allow/Deny log on locally, account type, and local or domain policy |
| Remote Desktop (RDP) | Remote Desktop Users membership, RDP allow/deny rights, credential format, and authentication requirements |
| Azure VM or Azure Arc server | Microsoft Entra sign-in configuration, Conditional Access, MFA, password state, and PKU2U where applicable |
| Microsoft Entra-joined Windows device | Conditional Access, device registration, Windows Hello/PIN state, and password state |
| After a Windows upgrade | Whether the available credential, device registration, or applied policy changed; an upgrade alone does not establish the cause |
Windows may append “For more info, contact your network administrator.” Microsoft documents the same sign-in wording for an Azure VM scenario in which Conditional Access requires stronger authentication: Sign in to a Windows virtual machine in Azure using Microsoft Entra ID.
Try these safe checks first
- On the sign-in screen, choose Sign-in options and try another credential type that your organization permits. If only PIN or biometrics fail, use the Windows Hello steps below.
- Check that you are using the intended identity. A local account may be entered as
.localuserorCOMPUTERNAMElocaluser; a domain account may useDOMAINuseror[email protected]. These identify different account contexts. - If the device needs a corporate network or VPN to contact a domain controller or identity service, follow your organization’s sign-in procedure. A VPN that becomes available only after the desktop loads may not help with the initial sign-in.
- If possible, test with a separate authorized administrator account to help determine whether the problem affects one user or the device’s policy. Do not promote the affected user to Administrators as a workaround.
Fix a blocked local or console sign-in
Use this path when the message appears at the physical PC sign-in screen. Allow log on locally controls which accounts can start an interactive session; a matching deny right can still block an account that is allowed. Microsoft describes the policy and its interaction with deny assignments in its Allow log on locally policy documentation.

Check local user-right assignments
- Sign in with an administrator account, press Windows + R, enter
secpol.msc, and press Enter. This tool may not be available in every Windows edition. - Open Local Policies > User Rights Assignment.
- Open Allow log on locally and verify that the affected user or an appropriate group is included.
- Open Deny log on locally and check that neither the user nor a group they belong to is included. A deny assignment can override an allow assignment.
- After an authorized policy correction, run
gpupdate /force, then sign out or restart and test the affected account.
The corresponding Group Policy location is Computer Configuration > Policies > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policies > User Rights Assignment. Microsoft’s UserRights policy reference documents the setting and policy path: UserRights Policy CSP.
Check group membership without over-privileging
On a system where an administrator can sign in, inspect local users and groups with lusrmgr.msc, or use elevated PowerShell:

Fix a Remote Desktop sign-in
RDP uses a different user right from signing in at the console. Check all of these on the destination computer:
- The account belongs to Remote Desktop Users or another group authorized for RDP.
- Allow log on through Remote Desktop Services includes the user or an appropriate group.
- Deny log on through Remote Desktop Services does not include the user or one of their groups.
- Remote Desktop is enabled, and the chosen account format and credential type are appropriate for the destination.
For a local or domain user who should be added to the local Remote Desktop Users group, an administrator can run this in elevated PowerShell on the destination computer, substituting the actual account:

Microsoft’s RDP troubleshooting guidance covers group membership and the allow/deny rights: Restrict users from logging on to Windows Server and Remote Desktop local policy does not permit logon. To apply an authorized computer-policy change, run gpupdate /force /target:computer; Microsoft documents this in its guidance on denying users permission to log on to an RD Session Host.
Network Level Authentication (NLA), the client, and the credential method also need to be compatible. If the permissions appear correct, have the administrator check those settings and the relevant identity sign-in records rather than disabling security requirements as a general fix.

Find and correct a domain policy override
If a setting in Local Security Policy is greyed out, or your change reverts after policy refresh or restart, a domain policy or device-management policy may be controlling the effective value. Editing the local setting repeatedly will not fix the winning policy. Microsoft describes where computer-based RDS settings are configured in Apply Group Policy Objects to Remote Desktop Services.
- From an elevated Command Prompt on the affected computer, create a policy report:
gpresult /h C:Tempgpresult.html. Alternatively, rungpresult /r /scope computerfor a text summary. - Review Applied Group Policy Objects and Denied GPOs, then identify the policy setting and its winning source.
- Check the applicable allow and deny logon rights, group restrictions, security baselines, and the policies linked to the computer’s organizational unit.
- Have the policy owner correct the intended GPO, then refresh policy and test again.
Domain controllers are not ordinary workstations or member servers: their user-right assignments and default groups can differ. Do not apply a workstation fix to a domain controller without checking the domain’s design and policy.

For an Azure VM or a Microsoft Entra-joined device, a local user-right edit may not address the problem. In documented Azure VM cases, Conditional Access requiring MFA can produce this message when the sign-in path does not satisfy the policy. Administrators should inspect the applicable policy, target application, authentication requirement, supported client method, VM sign-in configuration, and the user’s assigned VM sign-in role. Microsoft’s Azure VM sign-in guidance explains this scenario. The remedy is to use an accepted authentication method or correct a narrowly identified configuration—not to disable MFA broadly.

Check PKU2U only for the applicable remote identity scenario
For certain Microsoft Entra remote sign-in scenarios, Microsoft instructs administrators to check the policy Network security: Allow PKU2U authentication requests to this computer to use online identities on both client and server. It is not a universal setting for ordinary offline local-account sign-in. See Microsoft’s guidance for Azure VM sign-in and Microsoft Entra sign-in to Windows on Azure Arc-enabled servers.
Resolve a temporary or expired password
A browser or another sign-in channel can sometimes complete a required password change that the Windows or RDP sign-in path cannot. If the account may be temporary, expired, or forced to change its password, sign in through your organization’s approved browser route—using a private browsing window can help reveal whether a change is required—complete the password change, then retry. Microsoft documents temporary-password limitations and this browser-based troubleshooting for Azure Arc sign-in: Sign in to Windows on Azure Arc-enabled servers using Microsoft Entra ID. Microsoft also documents a limitation affecting temporary or expired passwords in a Pass-through Authentication scenario for Entra-joined device sign-in: Microsoft Entra Pass-through Authentication current limitations.
These are different failures: an incorrect password fails credential validation; a forced password change means the account requires a change flow; this message can indicate that the chosen logon method or policy combination is prohibited or unsupported.
Fix a Windows Hello PIN or biometric failure
- At the sign-in screen, choose Sign-in options and test the password credential if it is available and permitted.
- If password sign-in works, use I forgot my PIN when offered, and complete the organization’s verification and reset flow.
- Connect to the required corporate network or VPN if enrollment or policy checks depend on it.
- Before re-enrolling Windows Hello, confirm that the device is correctly joined and the user account is valid. On a managed device, do not delete Hello identity data as a first step; that may create additional enrollment and recovery work.
If password and PIN both fail, investigate policy, account state, and device registration rather than assuming the PIN alone is corrupt. A Microsoft Q&A report describes a PIN-related error after a Windows 10-to-Windows 11 upgrade, but it is an individual community report, not proof that upgrades generally remove credentials: Windows upgrade and sign-in method report.

Collect evidence instead of guessing
When you or an administrator can access the machine or its management portal, record the exact sign-in route, account format, time of failure, and whether another authorized account can sign in. Useful evidence includes:
- Group Policy:
gpresult /h C:Tempgpresult.html, including applied and denied GPOs. - Windows events: Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Security, with the failure time and relevant account or logon context.
- Device registration: Event Viewer > Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > User Device Registration.
- Microsoft Entra or Azure: sign-in log result, Conditional Access result, authentication requirement, failure reason, device ID and join type, and target resource or application.
When you need an administrator or recovery route
If no one can sign in locally, the affected computer is domain-managed, or you cannot change the policy that controls it, use an existing authorized recovery path: another local administrator, an appropriately privileged domain administrator, approved remote-management tools, Windows Recovery Environment, or your organization’s IT support. If the device is an Azure VM or Entra-managed, the administrator may need to review identity and Conditional Access records from the management side. Avoid replacing system files, creating hidden administrator accounts, or broadly turning off security controls; those steps do not identify the policy or authentication failure and can make recovery less safe.
