Excel’s full message—“Microsoft Excel cannot open or save any more documents because there is not enough available memory or disk space”—does not prove that your PC has run out of RAM or storage. Excel also uses this message for blocked temporary folders, permissions, Protected View failures, Outlook attachment problems, stopped services, add-ins, and unattended automation.
Use the symptom-based checks below. They start with reversible tests and avoid disabling security features or editing the registry unnecessarily.
Identify when the error appears
| Symptom | Best first test | Likely direction |
|---|---|---|
| Excel will not open, even by itself | Run excel /safe |
Add-in, startup file, profile, or Office installation |
| Blank workbooks open, but external files fail | Save the file locally and open the copy | Protected View, Outlook, download location, permissions, or firewall service |
| Only Outlook attachments fail | Save the attachment before opening it | Outlook temporary folder, preview handling, legacy firewall issue, or Protected View |
| Only a network, mapped, USB, or cloud folder fails | Save a new workbook to Documents | Permission, availability, quota, synchronization, or path problem |
| Only one workbook fails | Test another workbook and a copy of the original | File corruption, blocked content, or file-specific permission |
| Only a scheduled report fails | Run the same operation interactively under that account | Service-account profile, desktop folder, temporary path, or automation configuration |
Safe checks to try first
- Check the actual locations involved. Verify free space on the Windows drive (normally
C:), the destination drive, and any mapped or redirected location. Create a blank workbook and save it to the local Desktop or Documents folder. If that succeeds while a network or synchronized folder fails, the problem is access to that destination rather than general disk capacity. - Close Excel completely. Save anything possible, close every window, press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager, and end only obsoleteEXCEL.EXEprocesses belonging to the affected user. Do not end a process that may still contain unsaved work. Reopen Excel and test again. - Restart Windows. This releases locked temporary files and hung Office processes.
- Run Safe Mode. Press
Windows+R, enterexcel /safe(including the space), and press Enter. Microsoft Community guidance uses this as a diagnostic for add-ins and startup customizations (Microsoft Learn Q&A).
If Excel works in Safe Mode
Safe Mode bypasses add-ins and many customized startup settings. That makes an extension, startup workbook, template, or profile setting more likely than insufficient physical memory.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open File → Options → Add-ins.
- At the bottom, set Manage to COM Add-ins and select Go.
- Clear all add-ins, restart Excel normally, then re-enable them one at a time until the failure returns.
On older installations, inspect startup folders as well. Microsoft Community troubleshooting cites C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice15STARTUP for Office 2013 and C:Users<username>AppDataRoamingMicrosoftExcelXLSTART. Folder names differ by Office version and installation type, so do not delete contents blindly; move a suspected file to a backup folder and retest.

If only Outlook attachments fail
- In Outlook, save the attachment to a local folder such as Documents.
- Open the saved copy from File Explorer.
- If it opens, the workbook itself may be fine; Outlook’s temporary extraction path, preview handling, Protected View, or permissions are implicated.
For specific older combinations of Windows 8, Windows 8.1, or Windows Server 2012 with older Office/Outlook, Microsoft documented this error when the Windows Firewall service was stopped. To test that legacy case, press Windows+R, enter services.msc, locate Windows Firewall, and choose Start. This is not a universal fix for current Windows 11 or Microsoft 365; see Microsoft’s version-specific article for the affected products (Microsoft Learn).
If downloaded or emailed files trigger the error
Files from the internet and email can enter Protected View. Microsoft documented a historical Windows 10 problem affecting Microsoft Store Office apps when such files triggered Protected View. The issue was addressed through Known Issue Rollback and the March 15, 2021 out-of-band update KB5001567 (Microsoft support notes; KB5001567 details).

- Install current Windows and Office updates, then restart Windows.
- Test by saving the file locally and opening that copy.
Do not broadly disable Protected View. It is a security boundary for files originating outside your trusted environment, and turning it off may not address the actual temporary-path or permissions problem.
If saving fails only to a network, mapped, removable, or cloud location
- Save to local Documents, then retry the original location.
- Confirm the share or drive is connected and the folder still exists.
- Verify that the account has read and write permission and has not exceeded a quota.
- Check whether synchronization software is paused or reporting a conflict.
- Ask whether Group Policy redirects Desktop, Documents, Downloads, or temporary folders.
- Press
Windows+R, enter%TEMP%and then%TMP%, and confirm each path opens to an existing, writable folder.
Older Microsoft Community reports associate this error with invalid Internet-cache or temporary-file paths, sometimes pointing to a missing drive. Those are legacy, configuration-specific cases. Do not change registry values unless the exact path has been confirmed, the settings are backed up, and an administrator is involved.

If Excel runs from a scheduled task or reporting tool
A workbook that works for a logged-in user can fail when launched by Task Scheduler, a Windows service, a CRM export, or another COM-automation program. Test the job interactively under the same account, then check:
- The account has a real profile and access to the source and destination files.
- Its temporary directory exists and is writable.
- The task uses the intended user account and has the required permissions.
- Required desktop folders exist for that account.
Jet/Insightsoftware documents missing systemprofiledesktop folders and permissions as causes in certain automated Excel-reporting environments, including separate locations on 64-bit Windows (Jet documentation). Creating such folders is an administrator-level, automation-specific remedy—not a general fix for desktop Excel.

Repair Microsoft Office
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office and choose Modify or Advanced options; the label varies by Windows and installation type.
- Run Quick Repair first.
- If the error remains, try Online Repair, which can reinstall components and require sign-in or reactivation.
Repair can fix damaged program files or Office configuration. It will not correct a missing network permission, stopped legacy service, blocked temporary directory, or service-account desktop problem. Reinstall only after the local-file, Safe Mode, update, and destination tests have narrowed the cause.
When only one workbook is affected
Compare the failing file with a new blank workbook and another known-good file. Work from a copy, save it locally, and use Excel’s built-in Open and Repair option if available. A file-specific failure points toward corruption, blocked content, or permissions rather than a computer-wide memory shortage.

When to involve IT or Microsoft Support
- The issue affects several users or computers.
- Group Policy controls firewall services, profiles, or temporary paths.
- The failure occurs only in unattended automation.
- The system uses legacy Windows or Office versions.
- Registry, service-account, or protected-folder changes are required.
Give support the exact trigger (startup, attachment, local file, network save, or scheduled job), Office installation type, Windows version, whether excel /safe works, and the result of the local-save test. That information is more useful than simply reporting “low memory.”
Quick Recap
Decision path
- Can Excel open a blank workbook? If not, test Safe Mode and add-ins.
- Can the file be opened after saving it locally? If yes, investigate Outlook, Protected View, permissions, or the source location.
- Does a local save work while the original destination fails? Check share access, quotas, synchronization, and redirected paths.
- Does only a scheduled process fail? Investigate its account, profile, temporary directory, and desktop folders.
- Does only one workbook fail? Use a copy and file-recovery options.
- After these tests, repair Office; reserve registry edits, security-setting changes, and automation-folder changes for controlled, version-specific cases.
