How to Fix the RuneScape: Dragonwilds Fatal Error

Work through the official hardware, graphics, Windows and network checks for RuneScape: Dragonwilds fatal errors, then submit a reproducible bug report if crashes continue.

A RuneScape: Dragonwilds fatal error has no single universal cause or guaranteed fix. The reliable starting sequence is to confirm your hardware, lower the game’s Video quality, close other applications, update your graphics driver and Windows, then restart. If the crash happens when connecting online, work through the router, firewall, VPN, DNS and IP checks as well. The steps below separate startup, save-loading, online and mid-session crashes so you can stop once you identify the relevant branch.

What the fatal error means

“Fatal error” is a crash notification, not a diagnosis. Dragonwilds can fail while launching, loading a world, switching to Online mode or during play. The same message can therefore result from insufficient hardware, unstable graphics settings, an outdated driver, a Windows problem, a network failure or a defect introduced by a game update. Official support material does not identify one cause that applies to every player.

First note the timing and scope of the failure. Write down whether it occurs at startup, while loading a particular save, when selecting Online, or after you have played for a while. Also note whether offline play works, whether every world is affected, and whether the crash began after a patch, driver update, Windows update or settings change. Those observations determine which checks are worth your time.

Check that your PC meets the published requirements

Jagex lists the following requirements for the current PC version. The minimum specification is a baseline for running the game; the recommended specification leaves substantially more headroom for demanding scenes and higher settings.

#1 Best Overall
Steamforged Games, RuneScape Kingdoms The Board Game Bundle: King Black Dragon, Kalphite Queen, TzKal-Zuk, Culinaromancer, and RuneScape Expansion (5 Items)
  • Immerse yourself in a thrilling tabletop adventure filled with strategy, storytelling, and dynamic character interactions designed to challenge every decision.
  • Experience high replayability through immersive roleplay, unpredictable encounters, and evolving tactical choices that keep every session intense and fresh.
  • Master your destiny with customizable heroes, intricate quests, and deep world-building that fuel creative expression and competitive gameplay.
  • Perfect for RPG enthusiasts seeking complex mechanics, cooperative missions, and richly detailed scenarios that spark imagination and rivalry.
  • Premium components, atmospheric artwork, and narrative depth make this board game a must-have centerpiece for any tabletop gaming collection.
Component Minimum Recommended
Operating system 64-bit Windows 10 or newer 64-bit Windows 10 or newer
Processor Intel Core i3-8100 or AMD equivalent AMD Ryzen 5 5600X or Intel equivalent
Memory 8 GB RAM 16 GB RAM
Graphics NVIDIA GTX 1060 6 GB or AMD equivalent NVIDIA RTX 2070 8 GB or AMD equivalent
Storage 25 GB on an SSD 25 GB on an SSD

If your system is below the minimum, crashes can be expected under workloads the game cannot handle consistently. If it falls between minimum and recommended, begin with low settings and close background software before considering a hardware change. Meeting the recommended specification does not guarantee that a particular driver, save or patch will be free of bugs.

Apply the supported fixes in order

1. Restart the game and Windows

Exit Dragonwilds, restart the PC, and try the same action again. A restart clears temporary resource and driver states and is the first check recommended in Jagex’s troubleshooting guidance. If the crash follows a recent update, allow the game launcher to finish any pending update before testing.

2. Lower the Video quality setting

  1. Open Dragonwilds and reach the Main Menu.
  2. Select Settings, then Video.
  3. Choose a lower Quality setting and apply it.
  4. Retry the activity that previously crashed.

If the game remains unstable, lower the quality again. Keep the lowest setting that allows a repeatable session, then raise it one step at a time later. This test is useful even on a powerful PC because it distinguishes a rendering or resource-pressure problem from a failure that occurs independently of video load.

  • Inspired by the record-breaking online universe that’s captured the imagination of millions worldwide, RuneScape Kingdoms: Shadow of Elvarg is the official cooperative board game for 1-5 players.

3. Close unused applications

Close browsers with many tabs, launchers, video editors, virtual machines and other programs you do not need while playing. The objective is to leave more CPU, RAM and graphics memory available for Dragonwilds. Do not terminate Windows processes at random; close applications normally, then restart the game and repeat the test.

4. Identify and update the graphics driver

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter DxDiag and press Enter.
  3. Open the Display tab to identify the graphics processor and driver information.
  4. Download the current driver for that GPU from its manufacturer’s official support site (NVIDIA, AMD or Intel).
  5. Install the driver, restart Windows, and test Dragonwilds again.

Use the driver package that matches your exact GPU and Windows edition. A driver update is especially relevant when the crash started immediately after a game patch or when other 3D applications also fail. If the installer offers a choice of components, keep the default unless you have a specific reason to change it.

5. Install pending Windows updates

Open Settings → Windows Update, select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart when prompted. Retest only after Windows reports that the update process is complete. An operating-system update can include graphics, security or compatibility components required by the game.

6. Try the High Performance power plan when performance fluctuates

Jagex documents the High Performance plan for systems that need more consistent hardware performance. Press Windows key + R, enter powercfg.cpl, press Enter, and select High performance if it is available. Test the game, then return to your previous plan if it makes no difference or if you prefer lower power use. The plan changes Windows’ power behavior; it does not repair a defective driver or game file.

Fix crashes that occur only in Online mode

If offline play is stable but selecting Online or entering a session causes the fatal error, work through the connection checks below. They address a connection failure that can appear as a crash or prevent a world from loading; they cannot correct a game-side defect.

Restart the network equipment

  1. Exit the game and restart the PC.
  2. Power off the modem and router, wait for them to finish shutting down, then power them back on.
  3. Wait until the normal internet indicators return and test Dragonwilds.

Use a wired Ethernet connection if possible. If Ethernet is not practical, move closer to the wireless access point and reduce other heavy network traffic while testing.

Check firewall rules and remove connection intermediaries

Review Windows Firewall and any third-party firewall to ensure Dragonwilds and its launcher are not blocked. Do not permanently disable protection; create an allow rule only for the legitimate installed programs if your firewall requires one. Temporarily disconnect a VPN or proxy and retry. A VPN or proxy can change routing and authentication behavior, so this comparison helps isolate the cause.

Flush DNS and renew the local IP address

  1. Open Command Prompt with administrator rights.
  2. Run ipconfig/flushdns.
  3. Run ipconfig/release.
  4. Run ipconfig/renew.
  5. Restart the game and test Online mode.

Type each command exactly, including the slash. The commands clear cached DNS information and request a fresh local address; they do not change your game account or delete worlds.

Account for the 1.0.0.6 patch

Jagex published patch 1.0.0.6 on September 29, 2026. It fixed an issue in which some players crashed when selecting Online while offline. The patch also made some corrupted World Saves visible again. Jagex explicitly said that this was not a comprehensive fix and that some players could still be unable to access a world.

Make sure your launcher has installed 1.0.0.6 or a later update before repeating the test. If only one world fails while other worlds open, record that distinction. Do not assume that a world becoming visible means its data is fully repaired; the patch notes do not promise recovery for every corrupted save.

Use the crash pattern to choose the next test

  • Crash before the main menu: check requirements, restart, lower Video quality if you can reach settings, update the graphics driver and Windows, and close background applications.
  • Crash while loading one world: test another world, note whether the problem began after an update, and record the affected save name and exact steps.
  • Crash only when selecting Online: install the current patch, then restart the router, try Ethernet, review firewall rules, disable VPN or proxy connections, flush DNS and renew the IP.
  • Crash after playing for a while: lower Quality, close unused applications, update the driver and check whether the failure disappears when the session is shorter or less demanding.
  • Crash in both offline and online modes after all checks: treat it as a possible game bug rather than repeatedly changing unrelated Windows settings.

What not to treat as a guaranteed fix

Official guidance does not establish that deleting configuration files, changing graphics APIs, disabling overlays, altering BIOS settings or buying one particular component will solve every Dragonwilds fatal error. Those actions may be case-specific experiments, but they can remove settings or create new variables. Use them only when a support representative or a clearly documented, version-specific instruction calls for them, and keep backups of important data before making changes.

Report a reproducible crash to Jagex

Jagex says that if the issue persists, it might be a bug. A useful report is more actionable than a screenshot of the words “fatal error.” Include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Whether the crash reproduces every time or only occasionally.
  • The exact steps from launching the game to the failure.
  • What you were doing immediately before the crash, such as loading a named world or selecting Online.
  • The complete error text and when you first noticed the problem.
  • Whether the problem affects offline play, Online mode, one world or all worlds.
  • Your Windows version, CPU, GPU, RAM amount and driver version.
  • Whether the issue began after patch 1.0.0.6, another game update, a driver update or a Windows update.

Jagex may request the Player ID shown at the bottom of the in-game Settings menu. Copy it exactly if support asks for it. A concise description that another person can reproduce gives the development team a practical way to investigate the failure.
