How to Fix the “Referenced Memory” Error 0x00007FF in Windows

The 0x00007FF prefix is part of a memory address, not a universal error code. Find the process and trigger first, then follow targeted steps for controllers, software, Windows files, or RAM.

The “instruction at 0x00007FF… referenced memory…” message is usually an application access violation, not a standalone Windows error code. The hexadecimal prefix alone does not identify the cause or prove that your RAM is faulty. Start with the process named in the dialog, when the error happens, and any recent change. If it appears during Windows 11 startup or shutdown after using a controller, disconnect the controller first; community reports associate that particular pattern with GameInput or controller-related software.

What the 0x00007FF referenced-memory error means

In the message, “the instruction at” gives the address of code that attempted an operation, while “referenced memory at” gives the address it tried to access. “The memory could not be read” means the process tried to read an invalid or inaccessible location; “could not be written” means it tried to write to one. These addresses are clues for debugging, not normally a code you can look up to find one universal fix.

The process name in the dialog—such as explorer.exe, LogonUI.exe, a game, or an Office component—is more useful than the 0x00007FF prefix. Similar messages have been reported with unrelated programs and symptoms, including LogonUI and WerFault and Microsoft Access and Graph. A referenced-memory message by itself does not establish that the PC has bad RAM, too little RAM, or an undersized page file.

Start with the trigger and a low-risk test

Before changing Windows settings, note the complete message and identify the pattern. Record the application name, whether it says read or written, the full addresses, whether it happens at startup, shutdown, app launch, or during use, and anything that changed shortly beforehand—such as a driver, Windows update, new program, peripheral, or overclock setting.

  1. Restart Windows once. If the message was a one-off crash and does not return, further repair may not be needed.
  2. Close games and Xbox-related applications, then disconnect recently added peripherals: controllers, USB hubs, VR devices, external storage, webcams, and similar devices.
  3. Restart and reproduce the situation that normally triggers the message. If it stops, reconnect devices one at a time and retest to narrow down the trigger.

This test is particularly useful for a Windows 11 startup or shutdown popup associated with a connected Xbox or third-party controller. Reports on Microsoft Q&A describe that pattern, but they are community reports rather than a formal Microsoft announcement of a universal cause.

For a controller-related startup or shutdown error, test GameInput

If disconnecting a controller stops the popup, the controller path is implicated, but the controller itself need not be defective. GameInput, Xbox software, controller firmware, drivers, or another input utility may be involved. Treat stopping GameInput as a reversible diagnostic workaround, not a guaranteed permanent repair.

  1. Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find GameInput Service, open its properties, and select Stop.
  3. Test shutdown and startup again. If you want to test a longer workaround, change Startup type to Manual first. Note the original setting before changing it.

If Xbox or Microsoft Store games no longer recognize a controller, reconnect the device and restore the service setting. Disabling the service can affect controller input or related gaming features, and its behavior may differ by Windows build and installed components. Check Windows, Xbox app, controller firmware, and device-driver updates. If the problem began immediately after a particular Windows update, check that update’s history and known-issue information instead of assuming system-file repair will solve it. Microsoft Q&A includes reports recommending a GameInput test and additional reports of the controller-related pattern; neither establishes that GameInput explains every referenced-memory error.

Identify the crashing program and faulting module

If only one application fails, begin with that application’s official update, repair, reset, or reinstall options. The process in the dialog may be the program that crashed, but a process such as WerFault.exe can be reporting a failure rather than causing the original one.

  1. Press Win + R, enter eventvwr.msc, and press Enter. Alternatively, right-click Start and open Event Viewer.
  2. Go to Windows Logs > Application and find an Application Error event at the time of the crash.
  3. Record the faulting application name, faulting module name, exception code, fault offset, and application path. Look up the module on the relevant software or hardware vendor’s support site.

A faulting module may point toward a driver, DLL, plug-in, overlay, or application component, but it is evidence for narrowing the search—not proof that the named file is independently defective. Microsoft includes Event Viewer in its startup and application troubleshooting guidance.

Use the process name to choose the next branch

  • explorer.exe: Test a clean boot and temporarily disable overlays, shell utilities, controller tools, and other recently added startup software. Graphics drivers or browser background processes may also be relevant.
  • LogonUI.exe or WerFault.exe: Check what changed before the error appeared and inspect the matching Event Viewer entry. Do not assume the named process is the original cause.
  • A game: Disable overlays and mods, verify the game’s files in its launcher, update or roll back the graphics driver as appropriate, and test without overclocking.
  • Office or another older application: Try its repair and compatibility options, then use the faulting module and application path to guide the next step.

The same address pattern appears in unrelated reports, including a game crash report. Diagnose the program and circumstances, not the prefix alone.

Repair Windows system files with DISM and SFC

Use these tools when Windows component or protected-file corruption is plausible. Open Start, search for Command Prompt, select Run as administrator, and run the commands in this order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  2. After DISM finishes, run sfc /scannow
  3. Restart Windows and retest the original trigger.

DISM repairs the Windows component image; SFC scans protected system files and replaces incorrect versions when possible. See Microsoft’s DISM and SFC repair guidance, Windows image repair documentation, and SFC command reference.

  • “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations”: SFC did not find protected-file corruption. Continue with the application, driver, peripheral, or hardware branch if the error remains.
  • “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them”: Restart and test again.
  • Corrupt files were found but some could not be fixed: Review the CBS log or consider a deeper Windows repair.

A successful scan does not establish that third-party software, a controller, a driver, or physical memory is healthy; these tools cannot repair every cause of an application access violation.

Use a clean boot to isolate third-party software

A clean boot helps test whether a non-Microsoft service or startup program is involved. Before starting, note what you change so you can restore normal startup.

  1. Press Win + R, enter msconfig, and press Enter.
  2. Open the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then select Disable all.
  3. Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager. Disable nonessential startup items there.
  4. Restart and test the same trigger. If the error disappears, re-enable services and startup items in groups, restarting and testing until the conflict returns.
  5. Restore the normal startup settings after testing.

Do not disable Microsoft services indiscriminately. A clean boot can temporarily disable security, synchronization, device, and vendor utilities. It is useful for narrowing down conflicts involving antivirus tools, RGB or hardware-monitoring software, overclocking tools, game launchers, overlays, controller utilities, and shell extensions. Microsoft describes clean-start isolation in its Windows boot troubleshooting guidance.

Update or roll back the software that matches the evidence

  • Update the affected application from its official vendor, or use Windows Settings to repair or reset a Microsoft Store app.
  • For a game, verify its files through the game launcher and remove incompatible mods, injectors, overlays, or beta software while testing.
  • If the error started after a graphics-driver update, test a rollback; otherwise, use the graphics or hardware vendor’s official driver. Chipset, USB, Bluetooth, and controller drivers may matter when the trigger involves those devices.
  • If the issue began after a Windows update, check Windows Update history and Microsoft’s release-health information for your exact version and build. Remove or roll back an update only when the timing and evidence justify the test.

KB5034765 is historical context, not a current general explanation: Microsoft lists it as a Windows 11 23H2/22H2 update released on February 13, 2024, associated with build 22631.3155. Check the Windows 11 release information for version-specific details rather than treating that 2024 update as the cause of a present-day error.

Test physical memory when failures are broad or unpredictable

Memory testing is more useful when unrelated applications crash, the PC blue-screens, files become corrupted, or failures appear unpredictably. It is a lower-priority step when one application fails consistently after a specific update or peripheral connection.

  1. Press Win + R, enter mdsched.exe, and press Enter.
  2. Select Restart now and check for problems, then let Windows Memory Diagnostic complete.
  3. After Windows starts, open Event Viewer, select Windows Logs > System, and search for MemoryDiagnostics-Results.

If the test reports errors, return BIOS memory settings to defaults and temporarily disable XMP/EXPO or other memory overclocking. If you are comfortable working inside the PC, shut it down and reseat the RAM; test one module at a time and check the manufacturer’s diagnostics. Errors can involve a RAM module, motherboard slot, CPU memory controller, or unstable settings. A clean test does not absolutely rule out intermittent memory instability. Microsoft’s memory troubleshooting reference discusses memory-related diagnostics and failures.

Check virtual memory only when resource evidence points there

Windows normally manages the page file automatically. A page-file change is worth investigating if Windows reports resource exhaustion, memory or commit use is high when apps fail, or the page file has been manually disabled or constrained. Otherwise, increasing it is not a general fix for invalid memory access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In Windows, search Start for View advanced system settings, open it, then select Settings under Performance. In the Performance Options window, open Advanced > Virtual memory > Change and select Automatically manage paging file size for all drives. Confirm the changes and restart. Also check that the system drive has adequate free space. Microsoft explains the role of virtual memory in its guidance on application memory leaks and insufficient virtual memory.

Scan for malware when there are supporting signs

Run a full scan with Microsoft Defender if the issue began after installing pirated software, cracks, unknown utilities, or suspicious browser extensions; if unexplained processes or startup entries appear; or if security tools have been disabled unexpectedly. Malware is one possibility to eliminate, not the default explanation for a referenced-memory dialog.

Escalate to Windows repair only after targeted tests

If the failure persists after isolating the trigger and testing the relevant software, drivers, and hardware, consider System Restore to a known-good restore point or an in-place Windows repair install that preserves files and applications, where available. Reset this PC or a clean Windows installation should be later options, after backing up important data and checking hardware health. A full reinstall is a poor first response to a single broken application or a controller-specific conflict; community reports of the shutdown pattern describe cases that persisted through broad system repairs, which is another reason to isolate the trigger first.

Seek professional help if memory diagnostics report errors, blue screens or file corruption appear, unrelated applications keep failing, Windows cannot boot normally, or storage failure or data loss is possible.
