If Print Screen appears to do nothing, first press it once, open Paint, and press Ctrl + V. A normal Print Screen press puts a full-screen image on the clipboard; it does not necessarily create a file or show a notification. If the paste works, your key is functioning. Use Windows logo key + PrtScn to save a file automatically, or Windows logo key + Shift + S to select an area, window, or full screen with Snipping Tool.
Identify what “not working” means
Print Screen can fail in several different-looking ways. The correct fix depends on whether capture, saving, the keyboard shortcut, or the destination app is the problem.
| What you observe | Likely explanation | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing appears on screen | A plain Print Screen press is a silent clipboard capture. | Paste into Paint or another image editor. |
| A file is not in Pictures | Plain Print Screen does not automatically save a file. | Use Windows logo key + PrtScn. |
| Snipping Tool opens | Windows is configured to use Print Screen for screen snipping. | Check the Print Screen setting in Accessibility. |
| The key works only with another key | Your laptop keyboard requires the Fn modifier. | Try Fn + PrtSc, then Windows logo key + Fn + PrtSc. |
| Paste fails in one program | The capture may be in the clipboard while that program has a paste problem. | Test in Paint before diagnosing Windows or the keyboard. |
1. Test the clipboard capture
- Press Print Screen, also labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn, once.
- Open Paint. You can use another image editor, but Paint is a simple destination for this test.
- Press Ctrl + V.
Microsoft describes this shortcut as a static image snapshot of the entire screen placed in the clipboard. Because it is a clipboard operation, Windows may show no toast, animation, or new file. A successful paste proves that the capture path works; the apparent problem is only that you expected automatic saving.
If the image pastes correctly
Save the image from Paint using File > Save as, or change your workflow to Windows logo key + PrtScn when you want Windows to save the screenshot for you.

If nothing pastes
Repeat the test in Paint rather than the application where you first noticed the issue. If Paint also receives nothing, continue with the setting, Fn, and hardware checks below. Do not treat a failed paste in one application as proof that Print Screen failed.
2. Save a screenshot automatically
Press Windows logo key + PrtScn. Windows captures the full screen and saves the image in the Screenshots subfolder of Pictures (for example, PicturesScreenshots). This shortcut is different from pressing Print Screen by itself: it is intended to create a file as well as capture the screen.
If the screen briefly dims, the shortcut was accepted. Open File Explorer and check Pictures, then Screenshots. If you need a different folder or image format, open the saved image in Paint or another editor and save a copy where you want it.
3. Use Snipping Tool for a controlled capture
Press Windows logo key + Shift + S to open the screen-snipping interface. Choose the capture mode offered by your Windows release, select the required region, window, or full screen, and then use the notification or Snipping Tool window to save or copy the result.
This is the practical fallback when you do not want the entire desktop. It also bypasses uncertainty about where a clipboard-only image went: after selecting the area, explicitly choose the save command in Snipping Tool.

- Num Lock, Caps Lock, and Scroll Lock indicator lights provide quick status checks during typing and number entry. The layout is qwerty and ambidextrous, designed for familiar use with standard computer tasks.
- Built for regular use, each key switch is rated for up to 3,000,000 keystrokes. Rubber feet help keep the keyboard in place and protect the desk surface from scratches during daily work or study sessions.
4. Check whether Print Screen was assigned to screen snipping
- Open Settings.
- Go to Accessibility > Keyboard.
- Find Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping.
- Turn the option off if you want a direct Print Screen clipboard capture.
- Leave it on if you want the Print Screen key to launch the snipping interface.
The wording and exact placement can vary by Windows release and device firmware. If you do not see the label, search Settings for Print Screen. This toggle changes what the key does; it does not indicate that the physical key is defective.
5. Try the Fn key and alternate keyboard labels
Laptop manufacturers often put Print Screen on a shared key. Look for PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn, sometimes printed in a different color from the main key legends.
- Try Fn + PrtSc.
- For automatic saving, try Windows logo key + Fn + PrtSc.
- If the laptop has no dedicated PrtScn button, use Microsoft’s documented alternative: Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar.
Hold the modifier keys first, then press the key carrying the Print Screen function. If one combination works, your keyboard layout—not Windows’ screenshot capability—is the reason the unmodified press appeared inactive.
6. Separate a clipboard problem from an application problem
A screenshot can be present in the clipboard even when paste does not work in a particular browser, document editor, remote-desktop window, or chat application. Test the same capture in Paint. If it pastes there, use the destination application’s own paste command or permissions settings; the Print Screen shortcut has already done its job.
If Paint cannot paste after you have tried both Print Screen and Windows logo key + Shift + S, note whether the snipping interface opened. A working Snipping Tool capture with a failed plain paste points to the clipboard path or the original application, not necessarily the keyboard.

7. Check the physical key
When no shortcut produces a capture and the key feels loose, stuck, or damaged, test another keyboard. A USB keyboard with a dedicated Print Screen key directly bypasses a missing or defective laptop key. You do not need to replace the laptop keyboard just to regain this shortcut.
If the external key works, continue using it or use Windows logo key + Shift + S as a software workaround. Exact keyboard layouts and Fn behavior vary by model, so a replacement key must physically include a Print Screen function; do not assume every compact keyboard has one.
Common failure branches
Print Screen opens Snipping Tool, but you wanted the clipboard
Open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and disable Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping. Then press Print Screen and retest by pasting into Paint.
Print Screen copies an image, but no file appears
That is the expected result for a plain press. Use Windows logo key + PrtScn for the PicturesScreenshots location, or paste into Paint and save manually.
Windows logo key + PrtScn does not save
Try the Fn-modified form used by your laptop, then check PicturesScreenshots. If Fn + Windows logo key + PrtSc works while the unmodified combination does not, the laptop’s shared-key layout is controlling the shortcut.

Windows logo key + Shift + S does nothing
Press the keys together deliberately and watch for the snipping interface. If the laptop assigns Windows or another key to an alternate function, test the keyboard with an external Print Screen key and use Paint to verify whether any capture reaches the clipboard.

The key is absent
Use Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar on a device without a PrtScn button, as documented by Microsoft, or connect an external keyboard with a dedicated Print Screen key.
Only one program refuses to paste
Capture again, open Paint, and paste there. A successful Paint paste establishes that the shortcut and clipboard are working; troubleshoot the original program separately.
Or skip the browser setup
If what you need is a screenshot of a public webpage rather than your Windows desktop, ScreenshotNeo can return an image or PDF through one GET request. It does not repair a keyboard or capture private desktop content, but it avoids installing and scripting a browser for website captures.
ScreenshotNeo accepts full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, device presets or custom viewports, dark mode, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, click-before-capture actions, hidden selectors, waits for a selector, delay or network idle, request and resource blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agents, Authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, a chosen cache TTL, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage data and an OpenAPI specification. It can return PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF.
Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and each response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
