You can add an FAQ section in WordPress without a plugin. In the block editor, insert a heading and question-and-answer blocks for an always-visible FAQ, or use a Details block when answers should expand and collapse. A plugin is useful mainly when you need reusable FAQs, categories, shortcodes, or specialized editor features.
Choose the right FAQ format
WordPress gives you three practical approaches:
| Approach | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Headings and paragraphs | Each question is a heading followed by a visible paragraph answer. | Short FAQs where readers should see every answer immediately. |
| Details blocks | Each question appears as a clickable summary that reveals its answer. | Longer FAQs or pages where a compact accordion is helpful. |
| FAQ plugin | A third-party block or tool supplies its own editor controls and output. | Reusable FAQ libraries, categorization, shortcodes, or plugin-specific workflows. |
For most individual posts and pages, start with core WordPress blocks. This avoids an extra dependency and gives you control over the wording and layout.
How to add a visible FAQ with standard blocks
- Open the content. In your WordPress dashboard, open the post or page in the block editor and click where the FAQ should appear.
- Add the section heading. Select the + Block Inserter, search for Heading, and add a heading such as “Frequently asked questions” or “FAQs.” You can also type
/headingin an empty block and choose the result. - Add each question. Insert a Heading block for the question. Use a consistent heading level that fits the page hierarchy; do not make every question the page title level.
- Add the answer. Place a Paragraph block immediately below each question and answer it directly. Keep one question per heading and avoid combining unrelated issues in one answer.
- Repeat and preview. Add the remaining question-and-answer pairs, then use Preview to check spacing, heading order, links, and readability on a narrow screen.
This method needs no special FAQ feature. Headings and paragraphs are sufficient when answers should remain visible.
How to create an FAQ accordion with the Details block
The core Details block is designed for content that can be opened and closed, including FAQs. It shows a summary line and keeps the answer inside the revealed area.
#1 Best Overall
- Place the cursor where the first expandable question should go.
- Open the + Block Inserter, search for Details, and insert it. In an empty block,
/detailsis a shortcut. - Enter the question in the block’s summary field.
- Click inside the revealed content area and add the answer, using paragraphs, lists, links, or other suitable blocks.
- Insert another Details block for each additional question.
- Preview the page and open every item to confirm that the summary is understandable and the answer is readable.
Make Details blocks behave like an accordion
Details blocks can work independently, or they can be grouped so opening one closes the others. Select a Details block and set its Name attribute. Give every related Details block the same Name value. Leave Name blank when visitors should be able to keep multiple answers open at once.
Use a clear question as the summary rather than a vague label such as “Read more.” Visitors should understand what they will find before opening the item.

When an FAQ plugin is worth using
A plugin can be justified when the FAQ is more than a one-off section in a single page. Consider one when you need:
- A reusable FAQ library that can be inserted in multiple posts.
- Categories, filters, or a larger content-management workflow.
- Shortcode output for locations where block insertion is not practical.
- Editor controls or display options that core blocks do not provide.
To add a third-party block, search the Block Inserter’s directory and select the block. WordPress notes that selecting a third-party block can install its associated plugin when your account has permission to install plugins.

Check a plugin before installing it
- Confirm that it is maintained and supports your current WordPress version.
- Review the front-end HTML and keyboard behavior, especially if it creates an accordion.
- Check whether it adds FAQ structured data and whether your SEO plugin already does so.
- Look for reusable content, category, and shortcode features that solve your actual need.
- Test the layout on mobile and remove the plugin if it adds unnecessary duplication or overhead.
For example, the WordPress.org listing for Faqora FAQ Schema Blocks describes reusable FAQ blocks, shortcode output, optional FAQPage JSON-LD, and compatibility features. Those are claims in the plugin’s listing, so verify the current feature set and compatibility in your own installation before relying on them.

Visible questions and answers should be accurate and should match any structured data you add. Google’s general structured-data guidance requires markup to represent content that readers can see, follow relevant policies, and remain relevant to the page. Correct markup does not guarantee a search enhancement.
Google announced on August 8, 2023, that FAQPage rich results would be shown only for well-known, authoritative government and health websites. Ordinary business, publisher, and personal sites should not add an FAQ section expecting expanded FAQ results to appear regularly. Google also says unused structured data does not need to be proactively removed.
Quick Recap
Best Value
Keep the visible FAQ useful regardless of search appearance
- Write questions your visitors genuinely ask.
- Answer the exact question before adding background detail.
- Do not hide important information only in an expandable panel when immediate visibility matters.
- Keep wording, prices, policies, and instructions current.
- Avoid adding FAQ markup for questions and answers that are not displayed to readers.
