“Connection closed – mismatched mod channel list” means Forge rejected the network handshake between your client and the server before you entered the world. To fix it, make the Minecraft version, Forge build, mod files, launch profiles and required network channels agree on both sides; the decisive clue is usually in debug.log, not in the short disconnect screen.

Matching visible filenames alone is not enough: a different jar build, wrong game directory, vanilla server launch or rejected protocol version can produce the same error.

What the mismatched mod channel list error means
Forge performs a network-channel handshake before login completes. Mods register channels through Forge’s SimpleChannel API, which supplies a protocol version and compatibility predicates for connections in both directions. If either endpoint rejects the other endpoint’s version, Forge closes the connection. Forge also uses those values when checking compatibility in the multiplayer server list.
Forge’s documentation describes the third and fourth SimpleChannel arguments as predicates that check whether an incoming protocol version is compatible with the client or server. See the Forge SimpleImpl networking documentation for the API behavior.

The message is therefore a compatibility failure, not proof that every mod name differs. Typical causes include:
- A mod is present on one side but absent on the other.
- The same mod is installed at different builds or file contents.
- The Minecraft version and Forge build do not match the pack’s requirements.
- The client or server is loading a different instance directory than you think.
- The server was started with a vanilla server jar instead of the Forge server jar.
- A required channel reports an incompatible protocol version.
A Forge support log can show both parts of the diagnosis: channels that “rejected their server side version number” and client mods that are missing on the server. The disconnect screen normally does not identify the offending jar, so use the log-driven process below.
Record the exact environment before changing files
Write down the values shown by the launcher and server console for both endpoints. Forge treats the Minecraft version and Forge/mod API versions as meaningful compatibility components; a pack that looks the same can still fail when one component is different. The versioning concepts are documented by Forge at its versioning guide.

Do not start by deleting random mods. Keep a copy of the client instance, server folder, world, configuration files and existing logs so every change can be reversed.
How to fix connection closed – mismatched mod channel list
1. Confirm that the server is really running Forge
Inspect the server startup command, the files in the server directory and the startup console. The process must launch the Forge server jar for the same Minecraft version as the client. Starting the vanilla server jar instead is a documented cause of this error; a Minecraft Forum support answer describes that exact mistake at this support thread.

Stop the server before correcting the launch target. Then start it with the Forge-generated server launcher or jar supplied by the pack, and wait for the Forge startup messages before testing. If the console shows only vanilla-server startup behavior, you are still launching the wrong file. Do not assume that placing a Forge jar in the folder changes which jar a hosting panel or script executes.
2. Make the client use the intended pack instance directory
Open the profile settings in your launcher or modpack manager and inspect the GameDir (game directory) field. It must point to the pack’s actual instance folder, not the parent directory that contains several instances and not an old profile. Forge forum guidance specifically recommends setting the profile GameDir to the pack’s instance folder; see the relevant support discussion.
After correcting the path, launch once and confirm that the new instance’s logs and mods folders receive the current timestamp. If the files you edit never receive new timestamps, the launcher is reading another directory. Managed launchers may show a separate instance path even when the display name is identical.
3. Synchronize the complete mod set, not just names
Stop the server and close the client. Compare the server and client mods directories for every jar, including exact version suffixes and file contents. If your operating system provides a file-hash function, compare hashes for same-named files; two jars with the same filename are not necessarily identical.
For a controlled repair, back up both directories, then copy the known-good server mod folder into the client’s actual instance folder and replace duplicate files. A Forge support user reported resolving the mismatch by directly copying the server mod folder to the client and replacing identical files, then removing entries marked REJECTED in debug.log; the report is available at Forge support. Treat that as a synchronization procedure, not a reason to overwrite backups or a world save.

After copying, compare again. Check for duplicate jars representing two versions of one mod, files left in a nested folder, and client files copied into the server directory by mistake. Restart the server after the file change; Forge reads the mod set during startup, so an already-running process will not use your new folder contents.
4. Separate optional client-only and server-only mods from required channels
Not every mod must have a byte-for-byte counterpart. Forge’s channel system supports meta-versions such as ABSENT and ACCEPTVANILLA, allowing a channel to accept an endpoint where the mod is not installed when the mod author permits it. Conversely, Forge documents that returning false for both compatibility checks means the channel must be present on the other endpoint.
Read the modpack’s instructions before removing a client-only or server-only component. A visual, interface or performance mod may intentionally run on one side, while a gameplay mod with a mandatory channel must be installed and compatible on both. The precise rules are in Forge’s SimpleChannel documentation.
If the log names a channel, do not infer its side requirements from the filename alone. Check the mod’s documentation or pack manifest, then test with the exact supported arrangement. Removing a required server mod simply to make the list look equal can create a different failure.

For modern Forge installations, inspect .minecraft/logs/debug.log; managed launchers usually keep an instance-specific launcher log as well. Open the log from the failed connection attempt, search for the first handshake-related error and preserve the surrounding lines. Forge support repeatedly requests these logs because the screen message is too generic to identify the offending mod.

Search for these diagnostic phrases:
rejected their server side version number— a channel’s protocol compatibility predicate rejected the other endpoint.client has mods that are missing on server— the client loaded mods the server did not load.server has mods that are missing on client— the server loaded mods the client did not load.- A named channel such as
modid:main— the namespace often points to the mod that registered it. REJECTEDentries — a mod or channel was explicitly rejected during negotiation.

6. Identify the offending mod or channel
Use the first named channel or explicit missing-mod list as your primary suspect. Confirm that the corresponding jar exists in the intended directory on each side and that its version targets your recorded Minecraft and Forge builds. Check the server startup log as well: a mod that failed to load may be absent from the active list even though its jar is present on disk.
If the log names no single mod, compare the two active mod lists from startup logs rather than relying only on directory listings. A launcher can point to one folder while you inspect another, and a duplicate or failed jar can make the active list differ from the files you see.
7. Isolate the suspect safely
Back up the pack before testing. Remove the named suspect from both endpoints, restart the server completely, and attempt one connection. If the connection succeeds, install a Minecraft- and Forge-compatible build of that mod on both sides, restart again and retest. If the error remains, restore the mod and test the next named channel.
When many mods are involved and no channel is named, use a binary-search split: remove roughly half of the nonessential candidates from both endpoints, restart, and test. If the error disappears, the offender is in the removed half; if it remains, it is in the half still loaded. Repeat the split while restoring each tested set, and never alter the production world during the search. This approach changes one controlled variable at a time instead of producing an untraceable pile of deletions.
8. Reinstall only when the instance itself is polluted
A fresh profile is appropriate when the launcher path is confused, files are duplicated or corrupted, or repeated controlled synchronization cannot produce a consistent active list. Create a new Forge profile for the exact Minecraft version, point it to a new instance directory, and copy only the known-good server pack files. Keep the old debug.log for comparison and retain backups of the world, configuration and scripts.

No method is a universal fix for every mod loader. The evidence here is Forge-specific and version-sensitive; a Fabric, NeoForge or other-loader error can use different handshake rules and diagnostics.

Prevent the mismatch from returning
- Keep a copy of the pack release number beside the server files and client instance.
- Distribute one authoritative mod folder rather than allowing ad-hoc jar downloads.
- Record the complete Minecraft and Forge versions whenever the pack changes.
- Document the exact client GameDir and server launch target for anyone maintaining the server.
- After an update, start the server once, inspect the startup log, then launch the client and test before changing unrelated mods.
- Retain the previous working folder until the new release has completed a successful connection test.
The practical rule is simple: identify the rejected channel or missing mod, correct that specific incompatibility, restart both endpoints and retest. Randomly removing unrelated jars makes the active set harder to audit and can damage the pack’s intended gameplay.
