Most “Microsoft Edge Critical Error” warnings are not genuine Microsoft diagnostics. They are usually scareware pages or website notifications designed to make you call a scammer, install software, or grant remote access. Do not call the displayed number, click “remove virus,” download a tool, enter credentials, or run commands shown by the warning.
Close the page safely, revoke the site’s notification permission, and scan Windows if you downloaded or ran anything. Use the separate Edge-repair steps below only when Edge itself is crashing, freezing, or refusing to start.
First, identify which problem you have
| What you see | Most likely cause | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Full-screen warning, siren, countdown, phone number, or fake Defender logo | Tech-support scam webpage | End Edge with Task Manager; do not call or click the page |
| Windows-style alerts continue after Edge is closed | Permission for a website to send Edge notifications | Block that website in Edge’s site permissions |
| Edge crashes, freezes, opens blank, or closes immediately | Genuine browser, profile, extension, graphics, or installation problem | End Edge processes, update it, then follow the repair branch |
The phrase itself is not a standardized Edge error code. Microsoft’s scam guidance describes fake browser warnings that imitate Microsoft or security products and pressure users to seek fraudulent support: Microsoft support scams. A browser can display convincing logos and wording without Microsoft generating the message.
Close a fake warning without interacting with it
- If the tab closes normally, close the tab and then Edge.
- If the page is locked or keeps returning, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Microsoft Edge or each
msedge.exeprocess and choose End task. - Open Edge again. If it asks to restore the previous session, decline restoration, or immediately close the suspicious tab.
Do not hold the physical power button unless normal shutdown and Task Manager are unavailable; a forced shutdown can lose unsaved work. Microsoft’s historical guidance for this alert also identifies it as a tech-support scam: Microsoft Q&A.

Stop recurring Edge website notifications
Website notifications can appear in the Windows notification area even when Edge is closed, which makes a scam look like a Windows or Defender alert. They are different from ordinary pop-ups inside a tab. Microsoft explains the distinction and the supported controls here: Manage website notifications in Microsoft Edge.
- Open Edge and select Settings and more (…).
- Choose Settings > Privacy, search, and services.
- Select Site permissions > All sites.
- Open each unfamiliar or suspicious domain, find Notifications, and change it to Block.
On builds that support it, edge://settings/content/notifications is a shortcut to notification settings; the Settings path is the authoritative route because labels can change. If a notification is visible, use its three-dot menu to turn off notifications from that site, without clicking the notification body, “scan now” button, or phone number.
Microsoft announced quieter notification prompts for unfamiliar sites in Edge 113 in July 2023, but that does not revoke permissions already granted and is not a guarantee that every scam notification will be blocked: Microsoft Edge notification-spam guidance.

If the scam page keeps reopening
Clear the offending browsing data
- Select Settings and more > History > Open history page.
- Select Delete browsing data, set Time range to All time, select at least Browsing history and Cached images and files, then choose Clear now.
Clearing cookies can sign you out of websites. This is a troubleshooting step, not a substitute for revoking notification permission. See Microsoft’s current troubleshooting page: What to do if Microsoft Edge isn’t working.
Review extensions and startup pages
- Open
edge://extensionsor choose Settings and more > Extensions. Remove only extensions you do not recognize or did not intentionally install. - Check Settings > Start, home, and new tabs and remove unwanted startup pages.
- Review Windows startup apps and recently installed applications.
A recurring page can result from a startup setting, extension, profile problem, notification permission, or unwanted software; it does not by itself prove that the Edge program is infected.
Scan Windows after a download, installation, or remote session
A fake warning alone may need only permission removal. Scan if you downloaded or opened a file, installed a cleaner, extension, security tool, or remote-support program, ran a command supplied by the page or caller, see symptoms in multiple browsers, or gave someone remote access.

- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
- Open Windows Security from Start.
- Select Virus & threat protection > Quick scan.
- Use the available scan options for a more thorough scan if concerns remain; consider Microsoft Defender Offline scan when malware is still suspected.
Windows Security and Microsoft Defender Antivirus are built into Windows 10 and Windows 11: Microsoft Windows Security guidance. Keep real-time protection enabled; do not buy antivirus or a registry cleaner because a popup demanded it.
If you entered credentials, paid, or allowed remote access
- Disconnect the computer from the internet if a remote session is active and uninstall the remote-access tool.
- Change important passwords from a different trusted device and enable multifactor authentication.
- Contact your bank or card issuer immediately and dispute unauthorized transactions.
- Preserve phone numbers, receipts, emails, and session details for reporting and support.
Removing a notification does not reverse financial or account compromise.
Repair Edge when the browser itself is failing
Use this branch when Edge crashes, freezes, shows a blank window, closes immediately, or fails even after the suspicious page and permissions are gone. Microsoft’s crash diagnostics were updated June 3, 2026: Edge crashes or fails to launch.

End stuck processes
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, end every msedge.exe task, and start Edge again.
Update Edge
In Edge, select Settings and more > Settings > About Microsoft Edge and apply any update. The internal page is edge://settings/help. Microsoft’s update troubleshooting is at Troubleshooting Edge downloads, installation, and updates.
Test graphics acceleration
- Open
edge://settings/system. - Turn off Use graphics acceleration when available and restart Edge.
- If the blank-window or rendering problem stops, update the graphics driver and later test re-enabling acceleration.
Test a temporary profile
From Command Prompt, run:
"C:Program Files (x86)MicrosoftEdgeApplicationmsedge.exe" --user-data-dir="%TEMP%edge-test-profile"
The path can differ on 32-bit Windows or nonstandard installations. This creates a temporary profile and does not repair the original. If Edge works there, the original profile or an extension is a likely cause. If the path does not exist, locate msedge.exe or use Repair.

Create a fresh profile carefully
- Close every Edge window.
- Back up the profile, then open
%LOCALAPPDATA%MicrosoftEdgeUser Data. - Rename
DefaulttoDefault.oldand start Edge. - If it is stable, recover only needed data, such as bookmarks. Do not delete
Default.olduntil recovery is complete.
Use the built-in Repair option
- Close Edge for all users and sign in with administrator rights.
- Go to Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select Microsoft Edge > Modify, approve the prompt, ensure internet access, and select Repair.
Microsoft says this Repair operation should not affect browser data and settings. The Modify option may be unavailable on organization-managed installations; contact the administrator instead of bypassing policy: Microsoft Edge repair guidance.
When the alert is not coming from Edge
If it remains after all Edge processes are ended, check Windows notification settings, startup apps, scheduled tasks, another browser, extensions, and recently installed programs. A system-wide infection is possible, but the visual resemblance to Edge is not proof of its source.
Prevention
- Keep Windows and Edge updated.
- Allow notifications only for sites you trust and review permissions periodically.
- Install extensions only from sources you recognize and remove unused ones.
- Use bookmarks or type official addresses manually instead of following alarming pop-up links.
- For a trusted reinstall source, use Microsoft’s official Edge page.
An optional blocker such as uBlock Origin may reduce malicious advertising and redirects, but it is not malware removal or an Edge repair tool.
The Bottom Line
The usual “Microsoft Edge Critical Error” screen is scareware: close Edge without clicking it, block the responsible website notification, and scan Windows if you downloaded or executed anything. Only pursue profiles, graphics settings, updates, or Repair when Edge itself continues to fail.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsQuick Recap
