Update Prime Video and your browser or device software, and test on another network such as a phone hotspot. If playback works on the hotspot, your home router, ISP, DNS configuration, or public IP is the likely cause.
That message does not always mean you manually configured an HTTP proxy. Amazon can classify an ISP-assigned address or network path as proxy-like. Also confirm the exact wording: a browser’s HTTP 407 error means proxy authentication failed, while Prime Video’s VPN/proxy warning is a service-side connection-classification problem.
What the Prime Video proxy message actually means
“HTTP proxy error” is often used as shorthand for Prime Video’s VPN/proxy detection message. It is not automatically an HTTP 407 authentication error, and it does not prove that an HTTP proxy was deliberately configured.
- VPN or proxy detection: Prime Video believes traffic is coming through a VPN, proxy, Smart DNS, relay, or an address associated with such services.
- Unavailable browser proxy: The browser is configured to use a proxy that cannot be reached.
- Network or DNS failure: Prime Video endpoints cannot be resolved or reached normally.
- Playback or DRM failure: Date/time, software, account, display, or protected-content problems can look like a connection error.
- HTTP 407: A genuine proxy server is requesting authentication. This is different from Prime Video’s usual VPN/proxy warning.
Amazon groups VPN/proxy deactivation with general playback troubleshooting and lists errors including 1007, 1022, 5001, 7003, 7005, 7031, 7135, 7202, 7203, 7204, 7206, 7207, 7230, 7250, 7251, 7301, 7303, 7305, 7306, 8020, 9003, and 9074. See Amazon’s playback guidance.

Quick fix checklist
- Turn off standalone VPN applications, browser VPN extensions, Smart DNS, router VPNs, and privacy-relay services.
- Check operating-system and browser proxy settings.
- Disable web-filtering, ad-blocking, or security extensions temporarily for diagnosis; restore protection afterward.
- Close Prime Video completely.
- Restart the affected computer, phone, TV, console, or streaming stick.
- Restart the modem or router and wait until its connection lights stabilize.
- Set the device date and time to automatic.
- Update Prime Video, the browser, operating system, and device firmware.
- Retry playback, then test the same device on a trusted phone hotspot.
Amazon recommends deactivating VPN and proxy servers, restarting the device and network equipment, checking automatic date and time, updating software, and reinstalling the app when problems continue.
Turn off proxy settings on your computer
Windows 10 and Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Network & internet, then Proxy.
- Under Automatic proxy setup, review Automatically detect settings and any Use setup script entry.
- Under Manual proxy setup, turn off Use a proxy server unless your organization requires it.
- Close and reopen the browser before testing Prime Video.
These controls are documented by Microsoft. A work, school, hotel, or business computer may have an administrator-managed script or proxy. Do not remove it without permission.
macOS
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select Network, then the active service such as Wi‑Fi or Ethernet.
- Click Details and open Proxies.
- Turn off unwanted automatic, HTTP, HTTPS, or SOCKS options.
- Click OK, restart the browser, and test again.
Apple’s documented route is System Settings > Network > service > Details > Proxies. If settings are locked or return after you change them, a profile, employer, school, or security product may control them.

Firefox has separate proxy controls
- Open Firefox Settings.
- In General, find Network Settings.
- Click Settings… or Configure proxy.
- Select No proxy if you do not intentionally use one.
- Save, quit Firefox, reopen it, and retry.
Firefox can use its own connection configuration rather than the operating system’s setting. Mozilla explains this in its proxy troubleshooting guide.
Check browsers, extensions, and security software
Open Prime Video in a private or incognito window. If playback works there, temporarily disable VPN, proxy, ad-blocking, privacy, DNS-filtering, and traffic-inspection extensions one at a time. Try another updated browser as a comparison, then sign in again if the private window succeeds.
Do not erase all browser data as a first step. Clear Prime Video site data only after the simpler comparison tests. Keep the browser current; Amazon cites chrome://settings/help for Chrome updates and Help > About Firefox for Firefox updates.

Use a second network to isolate the cause
Test the same device on a phone hotspot or another trusted connection, then test a second device on the original home network.
| Result | Most likely area | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Works on hotspot but not home Wi‑Fi | Router, ISP, DNS, filtering, or public-IP reputation | Restart the gateway; inspect router settings and contact the ISP if needed. |
| Fails only on one device | Local proxy, app data, extension, security tool, or device software | Check that device’s settings, update software, and reinstall the app if necessary. |
| Fails only in one browser | Browser proxy, extension, cookies, or DRM compatibility | Use the browser’s proxy controls, disable extensions, and update it. |
| Fails on every device at home | Home network, ISP, DNS, or public IP | Power-cycle the gateway and ask the ISP to investigate. |
| Fails on every device and network | Account, Amazon service, title, or broad software issue | Check Prime Video status and contact Amazon support with the exact error. |
Amazon says that working on another network can indicate an ISP problem.
Restart the router and investigate the home connection
A normal reboot may be enough. For a suspected false VPN classification, Amazon forum guidance suggests disconnecting modem or gateway power for at least five minutes, reconnecting it, and waiting for service to return. A dynamic ISP may assign a different public IP, but this is not guaranteed.

Check the router for VPN profiles, Smart DNS, parental controls, traffic filters, custom DNS, or a security gateway. A router-level service affects every device even when no VPN app is visible. Changing DNS is an escalation step, not a guaranteed proxy-error fix: DNS changes name resolution but do not necessarily change your public IP or Amazon’s location assessment. Record the original DNS values before changing them.
If Prime Video works on a hotspot but not at home, ask the ISP to check DNS resolution, routing, filtering, and public-IP reputation. Amazon’s connected-device guidance also tells users to ask whether DNS traffic on port 53 is being blocked; see Amazon’s connection troubleshooting page.
You can say: “Prime Video is incorrectly detecting my home connection as a VPN or proxy. Can you check the public IP reputation, DNS routing, filtering, and whether a new public IP can be assigned?” Amazon forum guidance discusses requesting a new IP when an ISP address is misclassified, but neither Amazon nor the ISP guarantees that a new address will solve the problem.

Device-specific fixes
Smart TVs, Fire TV, consoles, and streaming boxes
- Confirm the device is connected to the intended Wi‑Fi or Ethernet network.
- Disable VPN, proxy, Smart DNS, or filtering features on the router.
- Restart the device and router.
- Install available firmware and Prime Video updates.
- Uninstall and reinstall Prime Video if the platform supports it.
Use a factory reset only after reversible steps fail. Amazon warns that resetting a connected device removes account information and downloaded content from all apps, not only Prime Video. See Prime Video’s device troubleshooting guidance.
Android phones and iPhone or iPad
- Disable VPN profiles and DNS or protection apps.
- Force-close Prime Video and restart the phone or tablet.
- Test cellular data against Wi‑Fi.
- Update or reinstall Prime Video.
- Set date and time automatically.
Android menu names vary by manufacturer, and iOS does not provide one universal cache-clearing control, so avoid assuming a single cache path applies to every device.
Windows and Mac computers
Check both system-level proxy settings and browser-level settings. Firefox may retain an independent proxy configuration even after Windows or macOS is corrected. On Chrome, Edge, or Safari, compare a private window and another updated browser before deleting broad browser data.
Not every playback failure is a proxy problem
- Date and time: Incorrect clocks can interfere with secure playback; use automatic time.
- Software: Update the app, browser, operating system, and device firmware.
- Congestion: Pause other heavy internet activity and test the connection.
- Account concurrency: Amazon forum guidance says the same title can be streamed on no more than two devices at once.
- HDMI and HDCP: External HD playback may require HDCP 1.4; UHD/HDR may require HDCP 2.2. Try another cable, port, or display.
- Corrupt installation: Reinstall Prime Video when the app alone fails.
- Title or service issue: If only one title fails, or every device fails simultaneously, the problem may be title-specific or on Amazon’s side.
When to contact Amazon or your ISP
Contact the ISP when the hotspot test works, several home devices show the warning, gateway reboots do not help, or custom filtering and DNS are involved. Contact Prime Video when the error persists on multiple networks, the account or title appears affected, or you need service-side investigation.
Before contacting support, record the exact message or code, device model, app or browser version, network used, whether a hotspot worked, and which proxy settings you checked. Do not install another VPN as a workaround: Amazon’s own troubleshooting direction is to deactivate VPN and proxy services, and adding one can make detection more likely.
