When WordPress shows HTTP error in the Media Library, the upload itself may have succeeded while the server failed to create the image sizes WordPress needs. Work through the checks in order: retry with a smaller, simply named file; identify whether Imagick or GD is active; raise PHP memory and execution limits; test GD; then investigate thread limits, plugins, security rules, paths, permissions, and host caps. This sequence finds the cause without making risky changes all at once.

What the WordPress HTTP image error actually means
The message is usually displayed after you select a file in Media > Add New or the Media Library. It is not a precise diagnosis. WordPress has to receive the file, pass it to a PHP image editor, read the pixels and metadata, and generate one or more intermediate sizes. A failure in any of those stages can be reported simply as an HTTP error. You may also see the wording The server cannot process the image.

The original file can reach the server successfully, but image processing can still run out of memory, exceed the execution-time limit, hit an ImageMagick (Imagick) problem, or be blocked by a security rule. The practical goal is to determine which stage fails, then change only the setting responsible.

Do these checks before editing configuration files. They take minutes and eliminate transient browser, filename, and file-size problems.

- Refresh the admin page and retry once. A stale login session or interrupted request can produce a one-off HTTP response.
- Use the browser uploader. In the Media Library, select Upload files and use the uploader shown there rather than a drag-and-drop control supplied by a plugin. If one uploader works and the other fails, the problem is likely in the interface or an extension around it.
- Clear the browser and site cache. Clear the browser cache, then temporarily bypass any page or administrative cache before testing again.
- Rename the file. Use a short name made of letters, numbers, hyphens, and one extension, such as
conference-room.jpg. Remove accents, emoji, brackets, ampersands, multiple dots, and other special characters. Keep the extension consistent with the actual format. - Reduce the file size and dimensions. Export a smaller JPEG or PNG and try that file. A smaller test tells you whether processing cost, rather than the upload request itself, is the trigger. One support discussion suggested keeping test images at or below 2,560 pixels on the longest side; treat that as a troubleshooting suggestion, not a universal WordPress limit.
- Try a second ordinary image. If a small, freshly exported image succeeds while one camera or Photoshop file fails, preserve the failing file for later metadata and dimension testing.
If every image fails, skip repeated browser experiments and move to the server-side checks below. If only very large images fail, record their pixel dimensions and file sizes; that pattern is valuable when you contact the host.
Identify the image editor WordPress is using
WordPress normally delegates image work to an available PHP editor: Imagick, the PHP extension for ImageMagick, or GD. The active editor matters because a broken or constrained Imagick installation can fail while GD works, and changing a PHP memory constant will not repair a missing extension.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFind the active editor
Open the Media or Site Health debugging information provided by your installation and look for the image-editor entry. Record whether it reports Imagick or GD, along with the PHP version and any listed memory or execution limits. The exact labels vary by WordPress release and hosting panel, so record the wording you see rather than assuming the editor from a plugin setting.
Check whether Imagick is installed and usable
Ask the host, or inspect the PHP information available in your hosting panel, to confirm that the Imagick PHP extension loads for the same PHP runtime used by the web site. A command-line ImageMagick binary on the server is not proof that the PHP extension is enabled. Core WordPress developers have associated HTTP upload failures with a misconfigured Imagick extension, so this check is especially important when Imagick is active and GD has not been tested.
Raise PHP memory and execution limits carefully
Large images require substantially more working memory than their compressed file size suggests. Decoding a high-resolution image, rotating it, and creating several derivatives can exceed PHP’s memory_limit. A slow conversion can also hit max_execution_time. Change one layer at a time and test after each change.
Try the WordPress memory constant
Back up wp-config.php, then place this line before the file’s final “stop editing” comment:

define('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M');
The 256 MB value is a common troubleshooting setting, not a guarantee that the server will grant that amount. Keep the spelling and capitalization exact, and do not add a second definition if the file already contains one. If the site has a separate administration memory constant, note its existing value before changing anything so you can restore it.
Use a user-level PHP setting when the constant has no effect
One shared-host support case reported that changing WP_MEMORY_LIMIT did nothing, while editing a .user.ini file to raise both memory_limit and max_execution_time fixed the upload. The precise values and whether the file is honored depend on the host’s PHP mode. A host-approved example is:
memory_limit = 256M
max_execution_time = 300
Use a higher execution value only when your host permits it; the example is not a universal recommendation. Save the file in the directory where that PHP installation reads per-directory settings, wait for the host’s PHP configuration refresh, and retest. If the host disallows .user.ini, the file will be ignored.
Understand why a larger upload allowance may not help
A support thread described raising memory to 256 MB and the upload size to 1 GB without resolving “The server cannot process the image.” The suggested next step was a smaller image. This illustrates the distinction between accepting the HTTP payload and processing its pixels: a generous upload-size setting cannot fix an Imagick timeout, a security block, or a file whose dimensions exceed what the server can process.

Test GD as a controlled Imagick workaround
If debugging shows Imagick is active, make GD the first editor for one test. This is a diagnostic change as well as a possible workaround. GD may process the file successfully when Imagick is misconfigured, but it can have different format and feature support, so do not assume it is permanently superior.
Force GD with the wp_image_editors filter
Use a small site-specific plugin when possible; editing a theme’s functions.php is another option, but the change disappears when the theme is replaced. Back up the file and add:

Deactivate other temporary image-editor snippets, save the change, and upload the same test image. If the upload works with GD, the result points toward Imagick configuration, resource usage, or an Imagick-only handling issue. If GD is unavailable, WordPress will still fail; remove the filter and ask the host to enable a supported editor. Once testing is complete, decide with the host whether to repair Imagick or keep GD for this site.
Restore normal editor selection after testing
Remove the filter (or deactivate the test plugin) after you have recorded the result. Leaving diagnostic code in a theme can create a surprise after a redesign, and forcing GD can hide an Imagick installation problem that should be repaired for other applications.

ImageMagick can create worker threads while it processes an image. On a shared server, that burst can collide with account limits and surface as an HTTP error even when PHP memory appears sufficient. After making a backup of .htaccess, a commonly suggested Apache setting is:
SetEnv MAGICK_THREAD_LIMIT 1
Place it where your host permits environment directives, then test a previously failing image. A syntax error in .htaccess can take the site offline, so use the host’s documented location or ask support to apply the setting. If the host does not allow SetEnv, do not keep experimenting in the file; request an equivalent server-level limit.
Rule out plugins and the theme
Image-optimization, security, and media-management plugins can alter the upload request or start a second conversion. A theme can also add upload filters. Isolate these variables rather than deactivating random items repeatedly:
- Back up the site or ensure you have a reliable restore point.
- Deactivate all plugins temporarily.
- Upload the same test image.
- If it succeeds, reactivate plugins one at a time, testing after each activation.
- When the error returns, leave the suspected plugin inactive and contact its author with the exact image dimensions, PHP version, active editor, and error time.
- If the error remains with plugins off, switch briefly to a default theme and test again, then restore the original theme.
Do not leave a security or optimization plugin disabled on a production site after testing. The purpose of the sequence is to identify the conflicting component, not to run without protections.

Check security layers such as mod_security
Web-application firewalls and mod_security rules can reject a multipart upload or an image-processing request. A blocked request may look identical to a PHP failure in the WordPress interface. Ask the host to review the web-server and security logs at the exact time of a failed upload.
For a controlled test, the host may temporarily disable the relevant rule or security layer for your account. Do not leave protection disabled. If the test confirms a rule conflict, have the host whitelist the WordPress upload or image-processing request instead of turning off the firewall globally. Record the rule identifier and the final exception so a future server change does not recreate the problem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify the Media path and filesystem permissions
Confirm the configured upload path
Open Settings > Media and inspect the upload-path setting if your installation exposes it. An obsolete custom path can point WordPress at a directory that no longer exists. Restoring the default path is a sensible test when the path is wrong, but save a backup of the current value and confirm where existing uploads live before changing it.
Check that the uploads directory is writable
The web server’s PHP process must be able to create files and subdirectories in the uploads location. Ask the host to verify ownership and permissions rather than applying broad, permanent write access yourself. A directory can appear writable in an FTP client while remaining unwritable to the account or PHP handler that serves WordPress. Have the host test creation of a small file as the web process, then remove that test file.
Consider the PHP version
Older PHP builds and mismatched extensions can produce image-editor failures. If the host offers a currently supported PHP version compatible with your WordPress release and plugins, test on a staging copy first. Upgrade only after checking plugin and theme compatibility, and keep a rollback plan.
Recognize the failure patterns reported in real cases
| Pattern | What it suggests | Next test |
|---|---|---|
| Only very large dimensions fail | Processing time or memory pressure, often in Imagick | Try a smaller export, record dimensions, then raise limits or test GD |
| A 3,000 × 4,000 image times out while 2,250 × 3,000 succeeds | A historical 2016 Trac report described a 30-second maximum-execution-time failure in the Imagick class at the larger size | Compare dimensions, check max_execution_time, and ask the host for logs; the report is an example, not a current universal threshold |
| Photoshop-originated files fail but stripped files work | One shared-host support case attributed the failure to ImageMagick handling of embedded metadata | Export without metadata or strip metadata in an image editor, then compare with a GD test |
| Every image fails, including tiny files | Extension, security rule, path, permissions, plugin, or host configuration | Inspect the active editor, isolate plugins, check logs, and verify the uploads path |
Changing WP_MEMORY_LIMIT has no effect |
The host may enforce a lower PHP limit or ignore the WordPress constant | Check effective PHP values, try the host-supported .user.ini method, or ask support to change the account limit |
The historical reports above are useful pattern matches, not promises that a current WordPress, PHP, or ImageMagick version will fail at exactly those dimensions or times.

Use FTP and WP-CLI only as a workaround
When the browser route is blocked but you need the file available immediately, upload it to the server’s intended uploads location with SFTP or FTP, then register it with WP-CLI over SSH. The relevant command is wp media import. A typical invocation is:
wp media import /absolute/path/to/image.jpg --title='Imported image'
Run the command from the WordPress installation, or provide the installation path using the WP-CLI options your host documents. Confirm the target path and file ownership first; an FTP upload to an arbitrary directory will not make an attachment. This workaround may still invoke WordPress’s image metadata generation, so it cannot bypass a broken editor or insufficient resources. Treat it as a way to register a file while the underlying HTTP problem is being repaired.
When and how to escalate to your host
Escalate after the quick checks, editor test, and plugin isolation produce the same result, or whenever you cannot edit server settings safely. Hosting support can see PHP and web-server logs that WordPress does not show in the browser and can confirm the effective limits rather than the values written in a configuration file.
Include a concise test record:
- Exact error wording and the time, including time zone.
- WordPress version, PHP version, and active image editor (Imagick or GD).
- Image format, file size, and pixel dimensions for a failing file and a successful file.
- Whether the browser uploader, a renamed file, a smaller file, and a second browser changed the result.
- Whether forcing GD worked and whether plugins and the theme were isolated.
- The effective
memory_limitandmax_execution_time, if your panel displays them. - Any log entry mentioning Imagick, ImageMagick, a timeout, permission denial, or
mod_security.
Ask the host to check the Imagick PHP extension, account-level memory and execution caps, thread limits, the uploads directory’s ownership, and security rules. A host cap can override wp-config.php, so support may need to change the account or PHP-FPM configuration rather than WordPress.
A practical decision path
- One file fails: rename it, remove metadata, reduce dimensions, and retry.
- Large files fail: compare dimensions, then check memory and execution time and test GD.
- All files fail with Imagick active: verify the extension, inspect logs, test GD, and ask the host to repair Imagick.
- All files fail with both editors: isolate plugins and the theme, check
mod_security, the Media path, and directory write access. - Configuration changes are ignored: assume a host-level cap until support confirms the effective PHP values.
- You need immediate access to the asset: use the FTP plus WP-CLI workaround while the server-side cause is addressed.
Keep a record of each change and its result. Reversing the last change is far safer than stacking several memory, security, and editor modifications and then trying to guess which one mattered.
The Bottom Line
The fastest reliable fix is to separate upload from image processing: test a small, plainly named file, identify Imagick or GD, then address the effective PHP limits or editor configuration. If GD succeeds, repair or replace the Imagick setup; if neither editor works, use logs to find security, path, permission, plugin, or host-level restrictions.
