ERR_QUIC_PROTOCOL_ERROR means a Chromium-based browser could not establish or maintain a QUIC connection. QUIC is the transport used by HTTP/3 and normally travels over UDP, commonly through port 443. A VPN, firewall, antivirus HTTPS inspection, router, ISP, browser extension, or the website’s own HTTP/3 configuration can interrupt it.
Start by finding out whether the error affects one website or many. Then work through the least disruptive fixes before changing browser flags or resetting Windows networking.

First, identify where the failure occurs
Before changing settings, test the same URL in another browser and, if possible, on a phone using mobile data. The result points to the likely source:
| What you find | Most likely cause | Best next test |
|---|---|---|
| Only one website fails | The site’s HTTP/3 setup, CDN, or network route to that site | Try another browser and another network |
| Several websites fail in one browser | Extension, browser profile, VPN, proxy, antivirus, or browser configuration | Use Incognito or InPrivate mode |
| All browsers fail on one Wi-Fi network | Router, ISP, firewall, DNS, or filtered UDP traffic | Test a mobile hotspot or Ethernet connection |
| The site works on a hotspot but not Wi-Fi | The original network or a device on it | Restart the router and check VPN or security filtering |
1. Reload and update the browser
Reload the page, then fully close and reopen the browser. If the problem continues, install any pending browser update.

In Chrome, open More ⋮ > Help > About Google Chrome. Select Relaunch if Chrome offers an update. Some updates do not take effect until the browser has restarted.
In Edge, open Settings and more … > Help and feedback > About Microsoft Edge, then restart if an update is available.
2. Try the page in Incognito or InPrivate mode
Open the failing address in a private window:
- Chrome: More
⋮> New Incognito window - Edge: Settings and more > New InPrivate window
If the page works privately, an extension or stored site data is a strong suspect. In Chrome, go to More > Extensions > Manage Extensions. Turn extensions off, test the page, and then re-enable them one at a time. Remove extensions you do not recognize or no longer need.

3. Disable QUIC temporarily
This is the most direct diagnostic test. Disabling QUIC makes the browser avoid HTTP/3 where possible and try a TCP-based HTTP version instead. If the website immediately works, something is interfering with QUIC or UDP traffic. That could be the local firewall, VPN, antivirus inspection, router, ISP, or the website’s HTTP/3 service.
Chrome
- Enter
chrome://flags/#enable-quicin the address bar. - Find Experimental QUIC protocol.
- Set the menu to Disabled.
- Select Relaunch.
Microsoft Edge
- Enter
edge://flags/#enable-quic. - Set Experimental QUIC protocol to Disabled.
- Restart Edge.
Firefox
Firefox normally reports a different error rather than the Chromium-specific ERR_QUIC_PROTOCOL_ERROR, but you can test its HTTP/3 setting:
- Enter
about:config. - Search for
network.http.http3.enable. - Set the preference to
false. - Restart Firefox.
These are troubleshooting changes, not guaranteed permanent solutions. Browser flags are experimental and may be renamed, removed, or reset after an update. Restore the setting to Default after testing unless you have a specific reason to keep QUIC disabled.

4. Check VPN, proxy, firewall, and antivirus software
Disconnect from a VPN and retry the page. If you use a proxy, temporarily disable it in the proxy application or operating system and test again. Corporate networks may intentionally block UDP traffic, while some security products inspect HTTPS traffic and mishandle HTTP/3 connections.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Also check whether your firewall or antivirus product has a browser-specific rule. Temporarily pausing protection can confirm the cause, but do so only briefly, on a trusted network, and re-enable it immediately after the test. The safer permanent fix is to update the security software or create an appropriate browser/network exception rather than leaving protection disabled.
If the error appears only on a work or school network, contact its administrator. UDP filtering may be intentional, and changing local browser settings may not be permitted or appropriate.
5. Clear Chrome’s cached data and cookies
Corrupt or stale site data can make a connection problem appear persistent. In Chrome:
- Select More
⋮> Delete browsing data. - Choose a time range, such as Last hour for a cautious first attempt.
- Select Cached images and files.
- Select Delete data.
If that does not help, repeat the process with Cookies and other site data selected. This can sign you out of websites and remove saved site preferences, so it is better as a second step rather than the first.
6. Restart the router and test another network
Restart the router, wait for it to reconnect, and try the page again. Then compare the connection with a mobile hotspot. If the hotspot works, the computer and browser are less likely to be the main problem. Investigate the Wi-Fi router, ISP, VPN, DNS filtering, or network security appliance instead.

A different DNS provider may resolve a DNS problem, but changing DNS does not directly repair blocked UDP traffic or broken QUIC packet handling. Treat DNS changes as a separate troubleshooting step, not the standard fix for this error.
7. Reset Windows networking
On Windows, open Command Prompt as administrator. Run these commands separately:
netsh int ip reset
netsh winsock reset
ipconfig /flushdns
Restart Windows after the commands finish. They reset TCP/IP configuration, rebuild the Winsock catalog, and clear the local DNS resolver cache.
To save a TCP/IP reset log, use:
netsh int ip reset c:resetlog.txt
This step can affect custom network settings. If the computer uses a manually configured IP address, special DNS settings, VPN software, or corporate networking tools, record those settings first.
8. Use Windows Network reset only as a last resort
Network reset removes installed network adapters and their settings, then reinstalls the adapters after Windows restarts. It may require VPN clients, Hyper-V virtual switches, and other networking software to be reinstalled or configured again.
On Windows 11, open:
Start > Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset > Reset now > Yes

9. Reset Chrome settings
If unwanted software, an extension, or a changed browser setting is involved, reset Chrome:
- Open More
⋮> Settings. - Select Reset settings.
- Select Restore settings to their original defaults.
- Select Reset settings.
This does not delete saved bookmarks or passwords, but it resets the default search engine, startup pages, content settings, cookies and site data, extensions, and themes. You may need to configure some browser preferences again.
10. Reinstall the browser
Reinstall Chrome if updates fail, the browser behaves incorrectly on multiple networks, or the previous steps point to a damaged installation. On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Find Google Chrome, select More ⋮ > Uninstall, and follow the prompts.
Before uninstalling, confirm that bookmarks and other important data are synchronized or backed up. Download a fresh installer from the official browser website after removal.

The value is a REG_DWORD:
QuicAllowed = 0
This policy is different from the experimental chrome://flags setting and is intended for managed deployments. Test it with the organization’s browser version and network architecture before broad rollout.
Edge documentation around its equivalent QuicAllowed policy has changed, and current policy indexes may mark it obsolete for newer Edge versions. Verify the policy in the target Edge release rather than assuming that a registry setting will continue to work.
What the error does not prove
- It does not prove the website is down. A local browser, firewall, VPN, router, ISP, or network route can be responsible.
- Flushing DNS is not a universal fix. It helps stale DNS data, not blocked UDP or broken HTTP/3 handling.
- Disabling QUIC is not a complete repair. It only switches the browser away from HTTP/3 where fallback is available. A separate TCP, TLS, DNS, proxy, or server issue may remain.
- Changing DNS is not a direct QUIC repair. It can help name-resolution failures but does not fix transport-level filtering.
FAQ
What causes ERR_QUIC_PROTOCOL_ERROR?
The browser is failing to establish or maintain a QUIC connection, usually while attempting HTTP/3. Common causes include blocked UDP traffic, VPN or proxy interference, firewall or antivirus inspection, browser extensions, router problems, and a faulty HTTP/3 configuration on the website.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWill disabling QUIC fix the error permanently?
It can work around the problem by making the browser use a TCP-based HTTP version, but it does not repair the underlying cause. Browser flags may also be reset or removed by future updates. Use the change mainly to confirm that QUIC handling is involved.
Why does the website work on my phone but not my computer?
The computer may have a browser extension, VPN, antivirus filter, firewall rule, or damaged network configuration that the phone does not. Try the computer in a private window, disconnect its VPN, and test it on a mobile hotspot.
Should I change my DNS server for this error?
Only if you have evidence of a DNS resolution problem. DNS changes do not directly fix blocked UDP traffic or QUIC protocol failures, so test another network and temporarily disable QUIC before treating DNS as the main cause.
The Bottom Line
Test the website in a private window, another browser, and another network first. If disabling QUIC makes it load, investigate UDP filtering, VPNs, firewalls, antivirus inspection, and the site’s HTTP/3 service. Clear browser data and reset Windows networking only when the earlier tests point to a local configuration problem. If only one website fails everywhere, the site or its CDN may need to fix its HTTP/3 setup.
