Refresh the launcher and force an update

- Open the ESO launcher.
- Select Game Options.
- Choose Repair.
- Let the examination and any downloads complete without quitting the launcher.
- When the process finishes, restart the launcher and try the game once.
Repair is different from a full game reinstall: it targets files the launcher considers incorrect and leaves the launcher installation in place. If the repair repeatedly starts over, note the exact point at which it fails and move to the firewall and patcher checks instead of looping the same operation.
A repair may take time because problematic files are downloaded again. Avoid starting several repair processes at once or launching the game while the check is still running. If the tool completes but login still fails, the completion itself is useful information to give Support: it shows that the client check finished without resolving the account or service symptom.
Fix a Mac patcher restart loop
After a new update, the Mac patcher can enter a cycle in which it restarts instead of completing the update. ESO’s Mac-specific recovery is to remove one version file from the patcher’s installation directory so the patcher can rebuild its update state.
- Quit the ESO launcher.
- In Finder, locate the ZeniMax Online launcher installation folder. The usual location is
/ZeniMax Online/Launcher.app/. - Inside that patcher directory, find
Bethesda.net_Launcher_Mac.version. - Delete that file only. Do not remove the entire game folder as part of this step.
- Start the launcher again. It should self-update; if it does not, close and relaunch it once so the update process can begin.
- After the patcher finishes, use Game Options → Repair if the game still reports missing or damaged files.
The filename and location matter: this procedure is for the Mac patcher’s restart loop, not a general instruction to delete launcher files at random. If the file is not present, do not substitute another file; proceed to the general patch checks.
Only perform this deletion after the launcher is closed. Removing a file while the patcher is running can leave the update process in an unclear state. The intended result is a self-update of the patcher, not removal of your account data or a complete game reset.
Resolve other patch and update failures
For a patch that fails without the specific restart loop, work through these checks in order:
- Restart the ESO launcher and attempt the update again.
- Confirm that macOS allows the launcher and game through the Applications Firewall.
- Check any additional firewall or antivirus software for a blocked ESO or launcher process. Temporarily changing a security rule should be done only according to that product’s controls and your organization’s policy; restore the protection after testing.
- Run Game Options → Repair and allow all required downloads to finish.
A firewall can permit ordinary web browsing while blocking the launcher’s patch connection, so a successful browser test does not prove that the launcher is allowed. Reinstall only the launcher after a macOS update
If ESO launched before a macOS update and stopped launching immediately afterward, ESO Support provides a launcher-reinstall path. This is a launcher replacement, not an instruction to erase the complete game installation first.
- Quit ESO and the launcher.
- Open the ZeniMax Online folder and remove the Launcher app.
- Sign in to your ESO account page and download a fresh Mac launcher.
- Install the launcher, open it, and allow it to update before selecting Play.
Steam users should not use the standalone account-page download for this case. Download ESO through the game’s Steam library so that Steam’s installation and ownership records remain connected. If the issue did not follow a macOS update, try the update, repair, and firewall procedures first; reinstalling the launcher is a targeted recovery for the operating-system-change scenario.
Removing the Launcher app does not mean you should delete the game folder as well. The purpose is to replace launcher files that may no longer work correctly after the operating-system change while preserving the installed client. Error 201
ESO associates Error 201 with three broad possibilities: an ESO service problem, a connectivity problem between your Mac and the service, or an outdated client. Check Service Alerts first. If service is operating, complete Game Options → Check For Updates, restart the launcher, and then test the connection again. A local repair is useful only after the client is current and no outage is reported.
Do not assume Error 201 proves that your password is wrong. Its listed causes include conditions outside the account itself. “Unexpected Internal Error”
This message can occur when a megaserver is under load, when installed files are corrupt, or when a Steam account is not correctly linked. Steam players should confirm that the Steam account owns ESO and that they are signing in with the ESO account linked to that Steam copy. Using a different ESO login can produce an account or ownership mismatch even when Steam itself is running normally.
For a Steam installation, verify both sides of the relationship: the Steam account must own the game, and the credentials entered in ESO must belong to the ESO account linked to that copy. If either check fails, file repair will not correct the mismatch. Include the ownership and linkage result when you contact Support.

Use a timer rather than making rapid retries. After the three-minute wait, try once; if the same message returns, go back to the service-status and client-version checks instead of switching megaservers repeatedly.
Check local connectivity and security settings
Once service status and client version are ruled out, inspect the Mac’s local path to ESO. Confirm that the Mac is actually online, then check whether the Applications Firewall or another security product has blocked the launcher or game. If you recently changed security software, installed a network filter, or moved between networks, those changes are more relevant than a full reinstall.
