If pressing the Space bar twice inserts a period and a space, turn off macOS’s Add period with double-space setting: open Apple menu → System Settings → Keyboard → Text Input → Edit, switch it off, then click Done. If the affected app still does it, quit and reopen that app.
This is different from double line spacing, where lines sit farther apart in a document. The instructions below address both meanings separately.
Identify which double-space problem you have

Turn off macOS’s period shortcut
Apple describes Add period with double-space as a way to end a sentence by pressing the Space bar twice. When it is on, two consecutive presses are treated as a period followed by a space in many apps; it does not necessarily work in every text field or specialized editor. - Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select Keyboard.
- Under Text Input, click Edit.
- Turn off Add period with double-space.
- Click Done.
- If the change has no effect in an app that is already open, quit and reopen it, then test again.
With the option off, two presses should remain two spaces in apps that honor this macOS text-input setting. To restore the shortcut, turn it on again. Apple’s instructions use the current System Settings interface; labels or placement can differ between macOS releases.

On older macOS versions
Older releases used System Preferences rather than System Settings. The equivalent control was generally at Apple menu → System Preferences → Keyboard → Text, where you could uncheck Add period with double-space. The older route is documented in this Microsoft support-community discussion; use the current path above on recent macOS versions.
If it happens in Word, Outlook, Pages, or a browser
When two spaces turn into . in several unrelated apps, start with the macOS setting rather than assuming the app is at fault. Apple says the replacement works in many apps, not universally. Microsoft support-community reports also point Word and Outlook users to the macOS-level option, but those reports are community guidance, not a guarantee for every edition or release of those apps: Word for Mac 2021 discussion, Word punctuation discussion, and Outlook punctuation discussion.

Word-only behavior
If disabling the macOS option does not fix a problem confined to Word, check Word’s AutoCorrect preferences for an option equivalent to Replace text as you type and review its custom replacements. Menu names vary by Word edition and release. Turning off spell-checking or grammar suggestions alone may not affect text replacement.
Pages-only behavior
After changing the macOS option, quit and reopen Pages before concluding that the setting failed. An Apple Community report describes Pages reading the setting after relaunch; the report tested Pages 14.1 on macOS Sonoma 14.6.1, so those versions are an example rather than a current compatibility statement. See the Apple Community discussion. If the problem remains only in Pages, check for text substitutions and formatting settings.

Browser or specialized-editor behavior
Browsers and other apps may use macOS text services, while code editors and specialized input fields may implement their own editing behavior. Test the same text in another app before deciding the setting is universal. For code, shell commands, URLs, Markdown, or structured data, check the editor’s own substitutions and extensions as well.
If the setting is already off
- Test the same typing in TextEdit or another simple text field.
- Test in a second app. If only one app changes the text, inspect that app’s AutoCorrect, text replacement, or editing preferences.
- Return to System Settings → Keyboard → Text Input → Edit and confirm the exact toggle is off.
- Quit and reopen the affected app. Apple Community users have reported this helping in Pages after a setting change: see the Pages troubleshooting discussion.
- Review custom text replacements in macOS and in the app. Apple’s text-input guide covers both automatic punctuation and text replacements: Apple text input settings.
- Temporarily disable third-party keyboard utilities, text expanders, macros, or remapping tools, then test again.
- Try another keyboard. If you use an external keyboard, compare it with the Mac’s built-in keyboard, or vice versa.
- If the issue remains across apps and keyboards, restart the Mac and test once more.
- If the behavior depends on language, test with a standard input source. Chinese, Japanese, and other input sources may have their own punctuation or replacement behavior; Apple notes that text replacements are incorporated into the user dictionary for Chinese and Japanese input sources.
If you mean double line spacing
Double line spacing changes the vertical distance between lines; it does not turn two Space-bar presses into punctuation. In Pages, a paragraph style, the selected text, or the position of the insertion point can affect which formatting changes. Apple explains these selection and insertion-point effects in its Pages formatting guide. Check the document’s paragraph or line-spacing controls and the style applied to the affected text rather than the macOS keyboard toggle. In Word or another editor, use that app’s paragraph-formatting controls.

Use a better tool than repeated spaces for alignment
Two spaces can be intentional—for example, in plain-text data, code, or archival transcription—and disabling the shortcut is reasonable in those workflows. But repeated spaces are unreliable for arranging content visually in a document, especially when the font is proportional. Use the layout method that matches the job:
- Tabs for text that needs consistent stops.
- Paragraph indents for margins and indented blocks.
- Tables for aligned rows and columns.
- Text boxes for positioned content.
- Paragraph or character spacing for adjusting document layout.
- Monospaced formatting when fixed-width text must remain aligned.
When to suspect the Space bar or keyboard
A predictable period-and-space replacement after two rapid presses is more consistent with text processing than a defective key. A hardware or remapping problem is more plausible when one press creates several spaces, the key repeats while held, input fails intermittently, or the key feels physically stuck or uneven. If an external keyboard behaves differently from the built-in one, that comparison can help narrow down the cause; it does not by itself prove which component is faulty.
