How To Fix The “DNS Server Unavailable” Error

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The error DNS Server Unavailable usually means your device can’t translate a website name (like example.com) into an IP address. Without that translation, pages won’t load—even if your internet connection is otherwise working.

This guide walks through the fixes that consistently resolve DNS failures, from quick checks to precise settings changes on Windows, macOS, iPhone, iPad, Android, and at the router level. You’ll also learn how to diagnose whether the problem is local, router-related, or caused by your ISP.

What the DNS Server Unavailable error actually means

DNS (Domain Name System) is like the internet’s phonebook. When you type a URL, your device asks a DNS server: “What IP address belongs to this domain?”

DNS Server Unavailable typically indicates one (or more) of these situations:

  • Your device can’t reach the configured DNS server (timeout or network failure).
  • The DNS server responds incorrectly or blocks requests.
  • Your router is providing the wrong DNS settings via DHCP.
  • A VPN/proxy/security tool is interfering with DNS traffic.
  • Your ISP’s DNS infrastructure is currently down or degraded.

It’s different from a site-specific problem. If multiple domains fail (not just one site), DNS is the prime suspect.

Before you change anything: quick checks that save time

Start with the fastest checks. They prevent you from changing settings when the issue is actually elsewhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Confirm you have internet at all: open a non-DNS-dependent app (for example, check if your email syncs or another service loads).
  • Try a different device on the same Wi‑Fi: if it fails too, it’s likely router/ISP or network DNS.
  • Try the same device on mobile data: if it works on 4G/5G, the issue is probably router/Wi‑Fi DNS.
  • Check whether the URL is spelled correctly: a typo can look like a DNS issue, but most real DNS failures affect many sites.
  • Disable VPN/proxy temporarily: if you use a VPN, turn it off for a test.

If these checks point to a local network/DNS setting, proceed to the fixes below.

Fixes that usually work first (network-level)

These steps clear common connection and DNS routing problems without needing to know the underlying cause.

  1. Reboot the modem and router: unplug power from the modem (and router if separate), wait 60 seconds, plug in the modem first, wait for it to fully boot, then plug in the router.
  2. Forget and rejoin Wi‑Fi: on your device, remove the Wi‑Fi network, then reconnect and re-enter the password.
  3. Toggle airplane mode: switch on for 15 seconds, then off, and reconnect to Wi‑Fi.
  4. Check network date/time: wrong time can break TLS and can complicate DNS-related troubleshooting. Set to automatic.
  5. Try one “known good” hostname: test google.com or cloudflare.com in a browser. If everything fails, DNS is likely down.

Change DNS settings on your device

If your router or ISP DNS is failing, changing DNS servers can restore access quickly. The safest method is to set explicit DNS servers on the device or at the router.

Two popular choices are:

  • Cloudflare: 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1
  • Google Public DNS: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

Use one pair. If IPv6 is enabled and you suspect IPv6 issues, you can disable IPv6 or set IPv6 DNS carefully.

Windows 10/11

  1. Open Settings > Network & Internet > Wi‑Fi (or Ethernet if using a cable).
  2. Click Hardware properties (or Change adapter options > select your adapter).
  3. Find DNS server assignment. If it’s set to Automatic, switch to Manual.
  4. Turn on IPv4 and enter:
DNS provider Primary Secondary
Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 1.0.0.1
Google 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4
  1. Click Save.
  2. Open Command Prompt and run: ipconfig /flushdns.
  3. Re-test browsing.

If you still see the error, temporarily disable any “DNS protection” features in security software to test.

macOS

  1. Go to System Settings > Network.
  2. Select your active connection (Wi‑Fi or Ethernet), then click Details.
  3. Open the DNS tab.
  4. Click + and add one DNS pair:
  • Cloudflare: 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1
  • Google: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
  1. Remove any DNS entries you don’t trust (optional, but often helpful).
  2. Click OK, then Apply.
  3. Flush DNS using Terminal:

Run one of these depending on your macOS version:

  • sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder (works widely)

Re-test the failing site.

iPhone and iPad (iOS/iPadOS)

  1. Open Settings > Wi‑Fi.
  2. Tap the i icon next to your network.
  3. Scroll to Configure DNS.
  4. Select Manual.
  5. Under Servers, add DNS servers:
  • Cloudflare: 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1
  • Google: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
  1. Tap Save.
  2. Toggle Wi‑Fi off and back on, then reload the website.

If you use iCloud Private Relay (on supported plans), it can also change network behavior. Test with it turned off to isolate the cause.

Android

  1. Open Settings > Network & Internet > Private DNS.
  2. Choose one of these options:
  • Off (to disable custom DNS)
  • Automatic (if you suspect misconfiguration)
  • Hostname and enter a known secure DNS hostname (varies by provider/ROM)
  1. If your device supports explicit DNS server entries under the Wi‑Fi network settings, use that instead:
  • Settings > Wi‑Fi > tap your network > IP settings > change to Static (or Manual), then set DNS.

Because Android UI differs across brands (Samsung, Google Pixel, OnePlus), follow the closest matching labels on your device. If the UI doesn’t offer manual DNS, use Private DNS or router settings.

Fix DNS at the router (often the cleanest solution)

If every device on the Wi‑Fi shows DNS Server Unavailable, setting DNS on the router prevents you from repeating fixes for each phone/computer.

Typical router steps

  1. Find your router’s IP address (common ones: 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1).
  2. Open a browser and go to the router IP address.
  3. Sign in with your admin credentials.
  4. Look for a section named Internet, WAN, DHCP, or DNS.
  5. Set DNS servers to one of these pairs:
  • Cloudflare: 1.1.1.1 / 1.0.0.1
  • Google: 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4
  1. Save changes and reboot the router if the UI asks.
  2. After it comes back, test from a second device on the same network.

When to reboot vs when to factory reset

  • Reboot is usually enough after DNS changes or when the router’s DNS forwarder hangs.
  • Factory reset is a last resort when you can’t reach the router settings, the DNS UI is locked, or the firmware has persistent network corruption.

Before a factory reset, write down your ISP credentials (PPPoE username/password) and Wi‑Fi name/password. You’ll likely need them.

Browser and OS-level causes to rule out

DNS failures can be triggered by local caching, broken network stacks, or security tools that “help” by filtering traffic.

Check VPN, proxy, and security software

Temporarily disable:

  • VPN apps
  • System proxy (Windows: Settings > Network & Internet > Proxy)
  • “Web protection” or “DNS protection” features in antivirus/security suites

Then try loading the site again. If it works, re-enable features one by one to identify the offender.

Clear browser DNS caches and connection state

Browsers keep their own network state and may continue failing even after you fix DNS on the OS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use browser-specific actions:

  • Chrome / Edge: close all tabs, then hard refresh the page (Windows/Linux: Ctrl + F5, macOS: Cmd + Shift + R).
  • Firefox: restart the browser and try again in a new private window.

Don’t rely on “clear cache” alone. Fixing OS or router DNS settings matters more.

Test with a different browser and a private window

If the error appears only in one browser, it may be local state, extensions, or a DNS-over-HTTPS setting. Disable extensions (especially ad blockers and privacy tools) and test in a private/incognito window.

Diagnose the root cause with targeted tests

When DNS Server Unavailable persists, diagnosis beats random tweaking. These tests tell you where the failure happens.

Test DNS resolution from your computer

Try resolving a domain that should always exist, like example.com or google.com.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • If DNS resolution fails for multiple domains, the issue is general DNS reachability.
  • If only one domain fails, the issue might be domain-specific or blocked by filtering.

Use command-line tools on Windows and macOS

Windows (Command Prompt):

  • Flush DNS: ipconfig /flushdns
  • Check DNS lookups (basic): nslookup google.com
  • Verify DNS server used: ipconfig /all (look for “DNS Servers” under your active adapter)

macOS (Terminal):

  • Flush DNS: sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder
  • Check DNS lookups: nslookup google.com or dig google.com (if installed)

If nslookup fails to return an IP address, the problem is real DNS connectivity, not just a browser cache.

Try an alternate network to isolate ISP vs local issues

Two quick isolations:

  • Same device, different network: if mobile data works, the problem is almost certainly your Wi‑Fi router or local DNS distribution.
  • Different device, same network: if both fail, focus on router and ISP DNS.

Common causes and how to fix them

These are the most frequent scenarios that produce the DNS Server Unavailable message—and what to do next.

Router hands out bad DNS via DHCP

When the router provides incorrect DNS settings to clients, every device gets the wrong addresses. Fix by changing DNS in the router’s WAN/DNS settings and rebooting.

ISP DNS outage or rate-limiting

If mobile data also shows the error, try switching to public DNS on the device. If that fixes it, your ISP DNS is likely degraded or failing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

IPv6 problems

Some networks misconfigure IPv6 DNS or block IPv6 traffic. Symptom: DNS over IPv6 fails while IPv4 works—or vice versa.

  • Test by temporarily disabling IPv6 on the device or setting DNS in a way that forces IPv4.
  • On Windows: adapter settings > IPv6 checkbox (temporarily disable for testing).

Captive portals (hotel, Wi‑Fi login)

Captive portals often allow limited connectivity but block DNS until you complete the login.

  • Open any site in a browser to trigger the login page.
  • If nothing triggers, try a captive portal detection link by searching for the Wi‑Fi network name and signing in manually.

Firewall blocking DNS (UDP/TCP 53)

Some corporate networks and hardened security configurations block DNS traffic. If DNS lookups fail and nslookup can’t resolve names, DNS traffic may be blocked.

Try disabling the firewall temporarily (only for testing) or use a trusted home router to confirm the local network isn’t the culprit.

Troubleshooting flow when the main fix fails

  1. Restart modem/router (60-second power-off for modem, then router).
  2. Set DNS manually on the device (Cloudflare or Google pair).
  3. Flush DNS on the OS (Windows ipconfig /flushdns; macOS command above).
  4. Disable VPN/proxy and browser privacy extensions.
  5. Test another network (mobile data) to isolate ISP vs local Wi‑Fi/router.
  6. Update router firmware if available (security updates often fix network stack issues).
  7. Check IPv6: disable IPv6 temporarily and retry.
  8. Contact ISP support if multiple networks fail—mention “DNS resolution failure” and provide what DNS server you’re using.

Most cases resolve within 10–20 minutes once you identify whether the issue is local or upstream.

FAQs

Why do some websites load but others show DNS Server Unavailable?

That usually indicates a site-specific block, a partial DNS failure, or one domain being affected by filtering. If google.com also fails, treat it as general DNS.

Should I use Cloudflare or Google DNS?

Either works well for troubleshooting. Pick one pair and test. If one pair fails on your network, the other often succeeds.

Can Windows/macOS browser settings fix DNS errors?

Browser fixes help only when the problem is local caching or extension interference. If DNS resolution fails in nslookup, you need OS/router DNS changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does iCloud Private Relay affect DNS Server Unavailable?

It can change routing behavior. If the problem appears on iPhone or iPad and you use iCloud Private Relay, toggle it off briefly to test whether DNS/network resolution improves.

How do I know if my ISP’s DNS is down?

Compare behavior across networks and set public DNS manually. If DNS fails even with public DNS or fails across mobile and Wi‑Fi, it’s often an upstream issue or broader connectivity problem.

Bottom Line

To fix the “DNS Server Unavailable” error, you usually need to restore DNS resolution by changing DNS servers (device or router), rebooting network equipment, and ruling out VPN/proxy/security interference. Start with quick network resets, then move to explicit DNS settings if the issue persists.

If you still can’t resolve names after switching to public DNS and flushing the OS cache, use targeted tests like nslookup to confirm where the failure occurs—and isolate ISP vs local network before contacting support.
