DayZ authentication failures usually come from one of three places: the game server, your network connection, or stale/corrupted data on your device. Check the server first, then restart the connection and Steam, and only then move to file repair or local-data reset. The exact code matters: community reports commonly mention 0x000400e1 and 0x00040031 (WaitAuthPlayerLoginState).

Identify the exact authentication error
Before changing anything, write down the complete message, numeric code, platform, and DayZ build shown by the launcher or server browser. Authentication errors that look similar can have different causes. A server outage will not be repaired by deleting local files, while a damaged client file will not be fixed by repeatedly retrying a healthy server.

Use this order of operations
- Check whether the selected server is online and accepting players.
- Test your internet connection, restart the router, and prefer Ethernet when possible.
- Exit DayZ, close its launcher, and fully restart Steam.
- Sign out of Steam, restart the computer, and sign back in if the error remains.
- Verify DayZ files in Steam.
- Reset DayZ’s local data after disabling Steam Cloud for the game.
- Check firewall and antivirus permissions for DayZ and BattlEye.
- Run Steam as administrator when your Windows account has administrator rights.
- Close background applications and retry.
- For a target-session message, wait before making destructive changes.
After each step, try the same server once. Changing several variables at once makes it difficult to tell whether the fix worked and can lead to unnecessary reinstalls.
1. Check the server before repairing your PC
A server that is offline, restarting, full, or still completing maintenance can produce an authentication error even when your installation is healthy. A Nitrado troubleshooting guide identifies server downtime as a primary reported cause of 0x000400e1. Because a host’s status page may lag behind an actual restart, check both the host’s status information and DayZ’s server browser.
Compare more than one server
Try a second server in the same region, preferably one with a different host. If another server accepts your login immediately, the problem is probably limited to the original server or its current session state. If every server fails with the same code, continue with the network and client steps.
Recognize a likely server-side incident
- The error began immediately after a server restart or scheduled maintenance.
- Other players report the same failure at the same time.
- Only one server fails while other servers allow you to join.
- The server browser shows the target server disappearing, repeatedly resetting, or changing its displayed build.
Do not repeatedly reconnect for several minutes during an outage. Repeated attempts can leave confusing session messages and do not bring an offline server back.
2. Test and restart the network connection
A throttled, unstable, or offline connection can interrupt the authentication handshake. Community guidance also points to high latency and Wi-Fi instability as common contributors to timeouts, although no published statistic establishes how often they occur.
- Stop DayZ and its launcher.
- Check that other devices can load a normal web page. If they cannot, fix the broader connection first.
- Power off the router and modem (if separate), wait about 30 seconds, then power them back on.
- Wait until the connection is fully restored and retry DayZ.
- On a desktop or console near the router, test a wired Ethernet connection. If Ethernet succeeds while Wi-Fi fails, investigate wireless interference, signal strength, or router placement.
A speed test can show whether the connection is severely degraded, but a high download rate alone does not prove that the route to a game server is stable. Look for packet loss, repeated disconnects, or latency spikes while testing.

3. Restart DayZ, its launcher, and Steam completely
A normal window close may leave Steam, the launcher, or an authentication process running. A complete restart clears stale session state and is one of the lowest-cost fixes reported for WaitAuthPlayerLoginState.
- Leave the server and wait for DayZ to return to the desktop.
- Close the DayZ launcher.
- Open Windows Task Manager and confirm that DayZ, the launcher, and BattlEye processes have exited. End a process only when it is clearly part of the closed game.
- Exit Steam from the Steam menu, not only by closing its window.
- Start Steam again, launch DayZ, and attempt one connection.
One Steam player described a similar sequence—turning off the game, closing the launcher, and resetting Steam—as a successful workaround. That is an individual report, not a guaranteed or official procedure.
4. Sign out of Steam and reboot the computer
If a full application restart does not help, clear the account and operating-system session as well. A user report on the Bohemia feedback tracker says that signing out of Steam, restarting the PC, and signing back in resolved the authentication failure.
- In Steam, choose Steam > Change Account or use the account sign-out option.
- Close Steam completely.
- Restart Windows rather than selecting sleep or hibernate.
- Sign in to the same Steam account after the desktop loads.
- Launch DayZ and test the server once.
This step does not change server data or your character. It simply forces Steam and DayZ to establish a fresh authentication session.

Damaged or incomplete local files can prevent the client or BattlEye from completing startup and authentication. Steam’s integrity check replaces files that do not match the installed build; it does not remove your account or server character.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click DayZ and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the scan and any download to finish completely.
- Restart Steam, then launch DayZ and test the connection.
The scan can take time and may report that files were reacquired. Let the download finish before launching the game. If the same error appears on several servers after a successful verification, continue with local data and security checks instead of running the scan repeatedly.

6. Reset local DayZ data safely
A damaged configuration or cached session file can survive a normal reinstall. A 2026 troubleshooting guide recommends disabling Steam Cloud for DayZ, deleting the local DayZ folder, and then verifying the files. Disabling Cloud first is important: otherwise Steam may restore the same problematic data.
Before deleting the folder
- Record custom graphics, keybind, and controller settings that you want to recreate.
- Make sure DayZ is closed.
- Understand that deleting the folder can remove local preferences and cached data. It does not erase a character stored on a multiplayer server, but it can remove locally saved configuration.
Reset procedure on Windows
- In Steam, open Library > DayZ > Properties.
- Open General and temporarily disable Steam Cloud for DayZ.
- Exit Steam completely.
- Open File Explorer and enter
%USERPROFILE%DocumentsDayZin the address bar. - Delete the
DayZfolder, or move it to the desktop as a backup if you want to restore settings later. - Start Steam and run Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
- Launch DayZ and test authentication before restoring any old configuration.
If the reset works, re-create settings manually and leave Steam Cloud disabled until you are confident that the new local data is stable. You can then decide whether to re-enable Cloud; restoring an old corrupted profile can bring the symptom back.
7. Check firewall and antivirus permissions
DayZ and BattlEye need to communicate through the network. Security software that blocks either executable can look like a server authentication failure. A community guide recommends allowing both programs through the firewall and antivirus.
- Open Windows Security and review Firewall & network protection > Allow an app through firewall.
- Confirm that DayZ and BattlEye are permitted on the network profile you actually use.
- Review antivirus quarantine and blocked-application history for DayZ or BattlEye.
- If your security suite has a network or ransomware shield, add the game components through its documented exception control rather than disabling protection permanently.
- Restart Steam after changing a rule and test once.
Do not download replacement executables from unofficial sites. If a security product has quarantined a file, verify the game through Steam so the file is restored from the official installation source.
8. Run Steam as administrator
Nitrado’s guide lists running Steam with administrator rights as a possible fix. Use this only when the Windows account already has administrator permission and you understand the security trade-off.
- Exit Steam completely.
- Right-click the Steam shortcut.
- Choose Run as administrator.
- Launch DayZ and try the server once.
If this changes nothing, close Steam and return to normal launching. Permanent elevation is not required by every installation and gives the application more system access than a standard launch.

9. Close background applications one at a time
Players have reported that overlays and background utilities, including chat or graphics software, sometimes coincide with authentication failures. This evidence is anecdotal. A 2025 Steam commenter specifically questioned older claims that Discord causes WaitAuthPlayerLoginState, so treat it as a troubleshooting variable, not a confirmed trigger.
- Close overlays and recording tools temporarily.
- Exit chat applications and GPU companion software.
- Restart Steam and DayZ.
- Test the server.
If the error disappears, reopen applications one by one to identify a conflict. Do not assume the last application closed is the cause without repeating the test.
10. Fix “already in the target session” messages
“Already in the target session” usually indicates that the server still believes your previous connection exists. The most consistently reported response is patience: wait a few minutes, then try to join once.
When waiting works
Leave DayZ closed during the waiting period so the server has time to release the old session. Reopen the game after several minutes and select the server again. If other servers work, the target server may be clearing a stale session rather than rejecting your account.

Lower-confidence player workarounds
One Steam commenter said that dying on the server, logging out, and logging back in cleared the message. This is not a dependable or official fix and may not be possible when you cannot enter the server at all. Do not risk valuable equipment solely to test it.
11. Handle build-mismatch and repeated timeout messages
“Client is a newer build than the server”
A discussion thread reported that this message disappeared after the server updated. Check that Steam has completed all DayZ downloads and that the server is running the same public build. If your client updated recently, give the server administrator time to update before changing local files.
Database or login timeout on an official server
A December 2024 discussion described a login succeeding after two or three retries. That pattern may indicate a temporary server-side problem, but it is based on a low-confidence player report. Retry sparingly, check another server, and avoid assuming that repeated failures prove your installation is damaged.
Console troubleshooting
The documented file-verification procedure above applies to the Steam PC version. The available guidance does not provide an independently captured file-verification path for Xbox or PlayStation 5. On a console, use the non-destructive sequence first:
- Quit DayZ from the console dashboard.
- Power-cycle the console fully, not just suspend it.
- Restart the router and test the connection.
- Check whether other servers are reachable.
- Wait if the message says you are already in the target session.
- Reinstall DayZ only after these steps fail and you have confirmed that the console account can access the game.
Because console-specific fixes are not documented consistently in the available material, record the platform, system version, DayZ build, server name, and exact code before contacting support.
When to stop troubleshooting and report the problem
If server checks, network restarts, Steam restarts, file verification, and a local-data reset do not change the result, the failure may be server-side or account/session-specific. Report it through the DayZ feedback tracker or official forums with enough detail for someone else to reproduce the situation.
- Exact error text and numeric code, such as
0x00040031or0x000400e1. - Your platform and operating-system or console version.
- DayZ build number and whether the client updated recently.
- Server name, region, and whether other servers work.
- The date and approximate UTC time of each failed attempt.
- Which steps changed the symptom, if any.
Do not include your Steam password, authentication codes, payment details, or unrelated personal information in a public report. Official confirmation of a universal cause is still absent, so a precise report is more useful than a claim that one particular application is always responsible.
Preventing the next authentication failure
- Let Steam finish DayZ and BattlEye updates before joining a server.
- After a forced disconnect, wait briefly before reconnecting to the same server.
- Use a stable wired connection when wireless latency is inconsistent.
- Keep firewall and antivirus rules specific to the game components instead of disabling protection globally.
- Note the error code immediately; screenshots are useful when the message disappears.
