“Video unavailable” is a symptom, not one specific Apple TV failure. It can mean an Apple service outage, an account or subscription problem, a title restricted in your region, an outdated app, an unsupported device, or an unstable network. Apple now generally brands the service as Apple TV, although “Apple TV Plus” remains common search terminology.
Use the checks below in order. First determine whether every title fails, only one device fails, or only one movie or episode fails; that pattern usually identifies the right fix.

- Check Apple’s System Status page.
- Try another title.
- Update the Apple TV app and your device software.
- Restart the app, device, modem, and router.
- Confirm the Apple Account and subscription or purchase entitlement.
- Test another supported device and, if possible, another network.
- Run Video Troubleshooting where the option is available.
- Reset the Apple TV app on an affected smart TV or streaming device.
- Escalate to Apple, your internet provider, or the device manufacturer based on the test results.
Identify the failure pattern first

1. Check whether Apple TV is having an outage
Open Apple’s System Status page and look for an affected Apple TV service. Also test a second title: a single unavailable episode is different from a service-wide failure.

2. Verify the Apple Account and what the title includes
Sign in with the Apple Account that owns the Apple TV subscription, rental, or purchase. A title appearing in the Apple TV app does not prove that it is included in the Apple TV subscription. Apple distinguishes the subscription from third-party Apple TV Channels, rentals, and purchases; those can require separate payment or authorization (Apple’s subscription guidance).
- Check that two-factor authentication has completed and that a failed sign-in is not blocking playback.
- For Family Sharing, confirm that the organizer’s purchase or subscription is shared with the account on the device.
- For a purchased item, open the library while signed in to the same Apple Account used for the purchase.
- Check that a channel subscription has not expired and that a rental has not reached its viewing period.
- Apple advises checking whether a subscription or channel has exceeded its simultaneous-stream allowance. The limit depends on the specific service and current terms, so do not assume one universal number.

3. Update the app and device
Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD
- Open Settings → System → Software Updates.
- Select Update Software.
- Turn on Automatically Update in the same area for future releases.
Keep the box connected to power during the update. If an update appears stuck for more than an hour, Apple advises contacting support before unplugging it in certain update states (Apple update guidance).

iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Windows
Install pending operating-system updates and restart. On Windows, update Windows, hardware drivers, and the Apple TV app through the Microsoft Store. Retry the title before changing account or network settings.
Android
Update Android and Apple TV through Google Play. Persistent playback or DRM errors may require help from the device manufacturer.
Smart TVs, streaming devices, and consoles
Update the device firmware and the Apple TV app when the platform allows manual updates. A television in standby may leave its operating system running; use a full restart rather than only turning off the display. Confirm that your exact model and region support the Apple TV app.

4. Restart the app, device, modem, and router
Apple TV box
Use Settings → System → Restart. If the box is unresponsive, disconnect power only as a last resort and reconnect it after a short pause.

Choose the platform’s full restart or power it off completely, then turn it back on. Standby is not always a complete reboot.
Modem and router
- Disconnect power from both devices.
- Wait briefly.
- Reconnect the modem first and wait for its connection lights to settle.
- Reconnect the router and wait for Wi-Fi or Ethernet service.
- Retry Apple TV.
This interrupts every connected device, but Apple recommends restarting network equipment when communication with Apple TV services fails (Apple network troubleshooting).
5. Check connection speed and stability
Apple lists 8 Mbit/s or faster for HD and recommends 25 Mbps for 4K (streaming troubleshooting; high-quality playback requirements). These figures are guidance, not guarantees: congestion, packet loss, weak Wi-Fi, and simultaneous use can still stop playback.
- Pause downloads, cloud backups, games, and other video streams.
- Move closer to the router or use Ethernet.
- Try Wi-Fi instead of a weak cellular connection, or vice versa for diagnosis.
- Test another title and another device on the same connection.
- Try a phone hotspot or other network briefly as a diagnostic. Mobile data may be costly or unsuitable for 4K.
- If nothing streams on any device, suspect Apple, the account, the home network, or the ISP.
- If other services also fail, contact the ISP after checking the router.
- If Apple TV fails only on one device, focus on its app, firmware, compatibility, or local network configuration.
- If only one title fails everywhere, investigate entitlement, region, or a title-side problem.
Apple devices select the best available quality automatically. A device that cannot deliver 4K may fall back to a lower quality rather than making the title genuinely unavailable.

- Open the Apple TV app.
- Open the sidebar.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Video Troubleshooting.
- Select Start and follow the on-screen tests.

7. Reset the Apple TV app on a television or streaming device
Use this only after checking service status, updates, restarts, and the account. In the Apple TV app, open Settings → Reset on supported platforms. Resetting removes personal information and restores the app’s original settings, so you will need to sign in again and reconfigure preferences (Apple’s reset instructions).
8. Handle one unavailable movie, episode, rental, or live event
- Confirm the title is offered in your country or region; licensing changes can remove it.
- Check whether it is part of Apple TV, a separate channel, a rental, or a purchase.
- Verify the Apple Account and Family Sharing arrangement.
- Try the title on another supported device to separate a title issue from a device DRM or quality limitation.
- For a live event, check whether the event has ended or has geographic restrictions.
- For rentals, Apple may require removing an existing download or rental from one device before downloading it on another. See Apple’s rental guidance.
If downloads work but streaming does not, the title and account entitlement may be valid while the live connection is unstable. Downloads still require storage and are not supported on every platform. A failed download, however, can point to storage, account, title, or device problems rather than broadband speed alone.

9. Check advanced network and regional edge cases
Hotel or guest Wi-Fi may use captive portals or restrictions that prevent authentication. VPNs, DNS filters, and ad blockers can also make Apple endpoints unreachable or produce a region mismatch; disable them temporarily for diagnosis, not as a guaranteed fix. Unusual DHCP, DNS, NAT, double-NAT, or peer-to-peer settings can cause inconsistent connectivity. Apple documents these cases in its network troubleshooting article.
Do not change your region to bypass licensing restrictions. Availability legitimately differs by country, region, device, and operating-system version.

Contact Apple
Contact Apple when the account is authorized, the problem follows multiple devices or networks, System Status is clear but a purchased title remains unplayable, or Apple services appear to be failing. Have the title, exact error, device model, operating-system and app versions, time of failure, and test results ready.

For an eligible purchase that remains unusable, use Apple’s problem-reporting and refund portal. Approval is not automatic.
Contact the internet provider
Contact the ISP when the failure follows your home connection, other services also fail, or another network restores playback.
Contact the device manufacturer
Contact the TV, streaming-device, console, or Android manufacturer when Apple TV alone fails on that hardware after updates, a restart, diagnostics, and an app reset. Do not buy new hardware until compatibility or a hardware fault is established; new equipment cannot fix an Apple outage, account authorization problem, or ISP failure.
What to record before support
- Exact error wording.
- Title, season, and episode.
- Device model and operating-system version.
- Apple TV app version, when visible.
- Whether other titles play.
- Whether another device or network works.
- Approximate start time and any System Status incident.
- Whether the content is subscribed, purchased, rented, or from a third-party channel.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Apple TV say a video is unavailable?
The message can indicate an outage, missing entitlement, regional restriction, unsupported device, outdated software, or a network problem. The pattern table above is the fastest way to narrow it down.
Why does Apple TV work on my phone but not my TV?
The TV may have outdated firmware, a corrupted app state, different network settings, or limited compatibility. Update and restart it, run Video Troubleshooting if available, then reset the app.
Can slow internet cause this message?
Yes. Apple lists 8 Mbit/s for HD and recommends 25 Mbps for 4K, but stability and congestion matter as much as a speed-test result.
Will a VPN fix the error?
Usually not. A VPN can add latency or create a regional-access problem. Disable it temporarily to test the normal connection.
Should I buy a new streaming device?
Only after confirming that the current device is unsupported, obsolete, or defective. Hardware will not resolve an outage, account issue, or ISP failure.
