If the Classic Editor’s Add Media button is unresponsive, first identify exactly where the workflow fails: the media window may not open, its upload controls may be missing, or selecting an item may not insert it. Then use the browser console and network evidence to narrow down whether the problem is browser-specific, caused by a plugin, theme or custom code, or connected to the server. There is no single fix that applies to every WordPress site.
“Add Media” is the Classic Editor label. The block editor uses different media controls, so the steps below apply when you are working in the Classic Editor.

Identify which part of Add Media is failing
Use the normal Classic Editor workflow as a reference point: place the cursor where the image should go, click Add Media, choose Upload Files or Media Library, select an item, then click Insert into post or the corresponding page action. The Classic Editor instructions describe this sequence.
- The button does not open anything: the click or media-window launch may be failing.
- The media window opens, but the upload button is missing: a control may be hidden or unavailable; note whether the Media Library still works.
- The library hangs or looks broken: distinguish a loading failure from controls that are visually misplaced.
- You can select an item, but click Insert into post and nothing happens: focus on the insertion step and any request made when you click.
Record what you clicked and what happened. These are different symptoms, and the distinction helps avoid changing unrelated settings.

Check the browser before changing site settings
Try the same action in another browser. This is a comparison, not a guaranteed fix: if it works there, the difference may help isolate a browser-specific issue or extension, but it does not establish the underlying cause.
- Open the WordPress editor and the browser’s developer tools.
- Select the Console tab, reload the editor if needed, and reproduce the failure.
- Copy the full error and stack trace, including the filename and line number. Note the browser and the action that triggered it.
- If you are comfortable testing it, follow WordPress’s guidance on enabling
SCRIPT_DEBUGand record whether that changes the behavior. Do not leave diagnostic settings enabled unintentionally.
WordPress’s JavaScript troubleshooting guide says: “If you encounter broken menus, metaboxes that won’t drag, or buttons that don’t work (such as Add Media), these may be caused by JavaScript errors or conflicts.” The guide was last updated September 23, 2026. That makes JavaScript errors or conflicts a reasonable line of investigation, not a diagnosis of any particular site.

If you ask a developer or support team for help, provide the exact symptom, browser, complete error and stack trace, filename and line number, triggering action, and whether SCRIPT_DEBUG changed anything. Preserve this evidence before trying several changes at once.

If the console points to a script, or the problem started after an update, test on a staging copy when possible. If staging is unavailable, take care not to disable components on a live site in a way that disrupts visitors or essential site functions.

Compare plugin behavior
Temporarily deactivate plugins in the test environment and check Add Media again. If the problem stops, reactivate plugins one at a time until it returns; the change can help identify a conflict. Check the relevant plugin’s current changelog and support information if the issue began with an update.
A support report describes one plugin-specific regression in which an upload control was missing and the vendor said version 4.2 included a fix. That is evidence about that plugin and report only, not a general recommendation to install or downgrade to version 4.2. Confirm the current status and compatibility for the plugin you use.

Compare with a default theme
On staging, temporarily switch to a default WordPress theme and repeat the same action. If behavior changes, investigate theme scripts or styling; if it does not, that comparison makes the theme less likely to explain the issue, but does not rule out every interaction. A support response suggested a default-theme comparison for one insertion failure, not as a universal remedy.
Review custom admin code and caching
Look for custom code that changes the dashboard or injects, removes, or rearranges scripts and styles. One resolved support case traced a visually broken media picker to custom head/footer cleanup code interfering with code generated for the picker. Treat this as a useful lead if you have similar customizations, not as a standard fix.

Where relevant, clear browser, site, and CDN caches, then temporarily rule out caching behavior as a cause. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether behavior changed. A support thread reporting an admin-ajax.php error after a PHP upgrade also discussed cache, theme, and plugin checks; it does not establish that PHP 8.3 is generally incompatible with WordPress media uploads.
Inspect failed requests and escalate server errors
If the button opens but insertion fails, or the media library hangs, inspect the browser’s Network tab while reproducing the problem. If a request to admin-ajax.php returns an error, save the status, request details, and timestamp. A 403 indicates access was denied; a 500 indicates a server error. Neither status identifies which component caused it.
Contact your hosting provider and ask them to check the matching request in server logs. Depending on the evidence, relevant checks may include file permissions, ModSecurity or other security rules, and server-side or CDN caching behavior. Share the timestamp and request details so support can match your reproduction to its logs. Do not permanently disable security protections or make blind changes to production configuration.
