After installing a new graphics card, first work out whether you have a monitor no signal, a blank Windows screen, a crash or restart, or stuttering only under load. Those symptoms point to different checks. Start with the display connection and Windows’ graphics reset; then choose a driver rollback or reinstall based on when the problem began. If it persists, test at stock settings and check the card’s seating, power connections, cooling, and exact system requirements before concluding that the GPU has failed.
Identify what is failing and when
“Black screen” can describe several different problems. A monitor that says “No signal” may not be receiving video at all. A blank screen with a cursor can mean Windows is running but not displaying normally. A stop-code screen or automatic restart is a system crash, while stuttering that appears only in a game or other demanding task calls for checking drivers, settings, heat, and hardware under load.

Note when the failure occurs: before Windows starts, at sign-in, on the desktop, or only during a particular game or workload. Also note whether the PC remains on, restarts, or shuts down. Microsoft’s guidance covers blank-screen troubleshooting and stop-code errors separately: blank or black screens and stop-code errors. These articles apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Windows 10 support ended on 2025-10-14.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

- Make sure the monitor is powered on and set to the input used by the PC.
- Check both ends of the display cable. For a desktop with a discrete graphics card, connect the monitor to an output on that card, not the motherboard’s video output.
- If available, try another cable or monitor to see whether the display path is the problem.
- If Windows may be running behind the blank screen, press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver. Microsoft says a beep or screen flicker may indicate that the reset occurred.
- Press Windows + P to cycle Windows display modes if the output may be set to the wrong display arrangement.
Choose the right driver action
Use the timing of the problem to decide whether to roll back or reinstall. A driver change that immediately preceded the symptoms makes rollback a sensible first driver step. If there was no recent update, or rollback does not help, use the GPU or system maker’s instructions to update or reinstall the correct display driver.

If the issue began after a driver update, try rollback
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, right-click the graphics card, and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and choose Roll Back Driver, if available. Follow the prompts and restart if requested.
Microsoft notes that Roll Back Driver may be unavailable when Windows has no previous driver to restore. If the screen is unusable, use Windows Recovery Environment and Safe Mode to reach driver troubleshooting options.
If rollback is not appropriate, reinstall the vendor driver
Get the driver for the exact GPU and Windows version from the GPU vendor or the computer maker. Laptops and OEM systems may require a system-maker package. AMD recommends checking driver release notes and offers a Factory Reset option in its driver installer for a clean installation. NVIDIA recommends reinstalling its driver and describes removing earlier installations as an advanced-user option. Prefer the vendor’s own cleanup and installation instructions; a third-party driver cleaner is not a required step. A clean reinstall can address a corrupted or conflicting installation, but it does not by itself show that the graphics card is defective.

Remove overclocking and software variables
Before treating the new card as the cause, test the computer in a simple, unchanged configuration. Temporarily return the CPU, memory, and GPU to factory settings. Turn off overclocking and performance-monitoring utilities, then see whether the same failure occurs. These utilities and unstable tuning can mimic a graphics-card fault.

If the problem continues and Windows remains usable, a selective startup or clean boot can help identify conflicts from other apps or services. Microsoft describes clean boot as a way to isolate software conflicts. Restore normal startup settings after the test. AMD also recommends stock configuration and disabling third-party monitoring or overclocking utilities when investigating instability.
Check the card, power, and cooling
Shut down the PC and disconnect it from power before opening the case. Follow the graphics-card and computer manuals; do not handle components while the system is powered. Check that the card is fully seated in the primary PCIe slot and that every power connector required by that exact card is attached. If you use a PCIe riser, remove it for initial stability checks if practical.

Confirm PSU suitability against the graphics-card and system requirements, not a generic wattage rule. NVIDIA notes that compatibility depends on more than the wattage printed on the PSU. AMD recommends using independent cables directly from the PSU for discrete GPUs rather than relying on a single daisy-chained cable. These checks do not establish that the PSU is faulty; symptoms alone are not enough to prescribe a replacement.

Use the failure pattern to narrow the next check
These distinctions guide diagnosis; they are not a probability ranking or a guarantee of the cause.
| When or how it fails | What to check next |
|---|---|
| No signal before Windows or at startup | Monitor power and input, cable, and connection to the graphics card; then check card seating and required power connectors. |
| Blank screen while Windows may still be running | Try the graphics-driver reset and display-mode shortcut. If the display stays unusable, use Recovery Environment and Safe Mode for driver troubleshooting. |
| Symptoms started immediately after a driver update | Try Device Manager’s Roll Back Driver option if it is available. |
| Crash, restart, or stop code | Record the exact stop code and whether Windows restarts or remains on. Test at stock settings and consider drivers and other system components, not just the GPU. |
| Stuttering or crashes only under a demanding workload | Check driver and app release notes, stock settings, temperature, airflow, PSU requirements, and other components that may show errors under load. |
If the problem continues, gather evidence before replacing parts
Record the GPU model, previous GPU, PSU model, Windows version, driver version, exact error or stop code, whether the computer reboots or stays running, and whether the failure happens at idle or under load. Check the graphics driver’s release notes and the affected game or app’s known issues. Other components—including the CPU, memory, motherboard, storage, or another device—can produce symptoms during demanding tasks.
If a stock configuration and a known-good vendor driver do not resolve the fault, seek support from the GPU or system maker or arrange component diagnosis. Back up important files before disruptive Windows recovery actions. A failing card, PSU, or other component should be established through diagnosis rather than inferred from stuttering or a black screen alone.
