How to fix stubborn GPS issues in Android Auto with Google Maps

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Android Auto should hand off real-time location to Google Maps reliably. When it doesn’t—stuck on an old dot, spinning “searching GPS,” huge route delays, or a map that jumps miles away—your car display is usually receiving location updates that are being delayed, blocked, or mis-calibrated on the phone.

This guide is a practical, step-by-step reference focused on stubborn Android Auto GPS problems with Google Maps. It covers phone settings, app permissions, cache repairs, connectivity issues, and the common “it works in the phone, but not in the car” edge cases.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Why Android Auto GPS gets stuck with Google Maps

Android Auto depends on your phone’s location stack and then streams guidance to the head unit. If any part of that chain is throttled (battery optimization, background limits, denied location permissions), Android Auto may keep requesting location that never updates quickly enough.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On top of that, some GPS problems are “real GPS” issues (weak satellite lock indoors), while others are “map logic” issues (network/routing, stale cache, incorrect device time/location accuracy settings). The fixes below target both.

Quick triage (do these first)

Before changing settings, verify you’re not chasing a temporary glitch. These checks take 2–5 minutes and solve a surprising number of cases.

  • Restart the navigation session: in Google Maps, stop navigation, then start again.
  • Toggle location: turn Location off for 10 seconds, then back on.
  • Reboot the phone: a full restart clears hung location services.
  • Unplug and replug Android Auto: disconnect USB, wait 10 seconds, reconnect.
  • Confirm GPS works on the phone: open Google Maps on the phone and check if the blue dot moves accurately.

If the phone’s blue dot is wrong too, focus on your phone’s GPS accuracy first. If the phone looks fine but the car display fails, focus on Android Auto permissions, cache, and the USB link.

Verify location services are truly enabled (phone + car)

Android Auto may show a map, but it can’t correct missing/blocked location. Make sure location services are enabled and set to the right mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On your Android phone

  1. Open Settings → Location.
  2. Turn Use location on.
  3. Set Location services or Location mode to High accuracy (wording varies by brand).
  4. Enable Improve location accuracy if you see it (often uses Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth scanning).

On the car display / Android Auto

  1. Open Android Auto on the head unit.
  2. Check that the Google Maps app inside Android Auto is actually using location (no “GPS unavailable” banner).
  3. If your head unit has a location permission prompt for Android Auto, accept it when prompted.

Gotcha: Some phones let you turn Location on, but location scans stay off (or are throttled). Always verify “High accuracy” and “Improve location accuracy” if available.

Confirm Google Maps is allowed to use GPS and runs in the right way

Google Maps can only provide accurate live position if it’s allowed to access location at the right level.

Set the right location permission for Google Maps

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Google Maps.
  2. Tap Permissions (or App permissions).
  3. Open Location permission.
  4. Select Allow all the time (or While in use if that’s the only option, but prefer all the time for best reliability in Android Auto).

Use the right guidance settings

  1. Open Google Maps on the phone.
  2. Tap your profile picture → Settings.
  3. Check Navigation settings and ensure you’re not forcing unusual alternatives (for example, avoid “use offline maps only” behavior if you recently lost connectivity).
  4. In Location sharing, confirm any related toggles aren’t set to effectively restrict location updates.

If your phone’s blue dot is moving correctly but Android Auto’s blue dot is frozen, permissions are a prime suspect. If both are wrong, it’s usually GPS accuracy or system-level location issues.

Fix permissions and background restrictions that break GPS updates

Battery optimization and “background restrictions” can stop location updates right when you start driving—exactly when you need them most.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Disable battery optimization for Android Auto and Google Maps

  1. Open Settings → Battery (or Battery & power).
  2. Go to Battery optimization (or App battery usage).
  3. Set Android Auto to Don’t optimize.
  4. Set Google Maps to Don’t optimize.

Turn off aggressive background limits (varies by brand)

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Special app access (or search “special access”).
  2. Check for Battery optimization, Unrestricted, or Background data.
  3. Ensure Background data is allowed for Google Maps and Android Auto.

Gotcha: Some vendor skins (Samsung One UI, Xiaomi/MIUI, Oppo/ColorOS) use different toggles like “Restricted,” “Sleeping apps,” or “Power saving.” The goal is always the same: don’t throttle location while Android Auto is active.

Repair Android Auto and clear the right caches

When you see a persistent GPS freeze only in the car, the fastest path is often resetting the Android Auto app state and clearing caches (not just restarting navigation).

Update first (stale builds cause location quirks)

  1. Open Google Play Store → My apps & games.
  2. Update Android Auto.
  3. Update Google Maps.
  4. If you use the Google app for location-related prompts, ensure Google is updated too.

Clear Android Auto cache

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Android Auto.
  2. Tap Storage.
  3. Tap Clear cache.
  4. Reboot the phone.

Clear Google Maps cache (only if needed)

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Google Maps.
  2. Tap Storage.
  3. Tap Clear cache.
  4. Reopen Google Maps and test location on the phone first.

If cache clearing doesn’t help, the nuclear option is Clear data for Android Auto (you’ll have to reconfigure). Use it when you’ve already tried updates, permissions, and battery settings.

Improve GPS accuracy before you drive

Many “stubborn GPS” reports are really a satellite lock issue. Indoors, under heavy tree cover, or behind reflective windshields can delay GPS lock enough that Android Auto appears stuck.

Do this while parked

  1. Stand or park outdoors with an open view of the sky.
  2. Open Google Maps on the phone and wait for the blue dot to stabilize (often 30–120 seconds).
  3. Then start Android Auto and resume navigation.

Calibrate your compass and movement

Some map “spin” issues come from compass/motion sensor drift. In Google Maps, walk 10–20 meters in a couple directions after unlocking location. If your phone supports it, also check compass calibration in your device settings.

If the blue dot is accurate but the car display orientation is wrong, this is often the reason.

Network matters: when GPS is fine but routing guidance isn’t

GPS (position) and navigation guidance (routes, traffic, re-routing) rely on different data sources. You can have a correct blue dot with broken turn-by-turn instructions if connectivity is blocked.

Check mobile data and Wi‑Fi

  1. Ensure Mobile data is on.
  2. Check that you’re not in an aggressive data-saving mode that blocks background location/network.
  3. Turn Wi‑Fi on if you’re in an area where it helps accuracy (especially with “Improve location accuracy”).

Disable VPN for testing

  1. If you use a VPN, temporarily disable it.
  2. Test Android Auto again.

For some setups, VPNs break Google services that provide map tiles, traffic, and reroute data—leading to apparent “GPS failure” even when the position is actually updating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check cable, USB power, and head-unit settings

A weak or incompatible USB connection can cause Android Auto to lag, freeze, or stop streaming location updates reliably.

Use a known-good USB cable

  • Use the cable that came with the phone when possible.
  • Aim for a cable that supports data (not just charging).
  • Test with another cable if you see random GPS stutter.

Try a different USB port

  1. Some cars have multiple USB ports; one may be “charging only.”
  2. Switch ports and test again.

Confirm Android Auto settings on the head unit

  1. In the car’s settings, check for an option like Android Auto → Allow.
  2. Disable any “power saving” mode for connected devices if available.

Gotcha: If the GPS issue disappears with a different cable/port, you’re dealing with a transport problem, not Google Maps configuration.

When the map is offset, spinning, or shows the wrong location

These symptoms usually point to inaccurate positioning, sensor drift, or stale location services on the phone.

Start navigation on the phone, then connect

Open Google Maps on the phone and start navigation first. Then connect Android Auto and let it mirror the active session. This can help because your phone acquires GPS lock before Android Auto requests a stream.

Try offline navigation carefully

If you’re in a dead zone for traffic data, offline maps may keep guidance usable. However, turn-by-turn reliability may still degrade if live location updates are throttled.

Test with a different navigation app (diagnostic)

Temporarily use a different navigation app in Android Auto to see if location breaks across apps. If all apps fail, the issue is almost certainly phone-level location permissions/throttling or USB transport.

FAQs

Why does my Google Maps GPS work on my phone but not on Android Auto?

That pattern usually means Android Auto isn’t receiving reliable location updates (permission level, background battery limits, or USB transport). Start by setting Google Maps location to Allow all the time and disabling battery optimization for Android Auto and Google Maps, then test with a different USB cable/port.

Does clearing cache for Android Auto erase my settings?

Clearing cache typically won’t delete your preferences the way clearing data does. If you end up needing Clear data, expect to re-pair and reconfigure Android Auto.

Should I turn Location off when I’m not navigating?

You can, but for troubleshooting it’s better to keep it on and set to High accuracy. Once you’ve fixed the issue, you can return to your preferred power-saving behavior and confirm GPS remains stable.

Can a bad USB cable cause GPS issues?

Yes. Android Auto depends on a stable data link. A cable that supports charging but not reliable data can lead to lag, freezing, or missing location updates on the head unit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

My map is rotating or my direction is wrong—what should I check?

Compass/sensor drift is common. Open Google Maps on the phone, stabilize the blue dot outdoors, then walk a short loop to recalibrate. Also remove metal interference near the phone (some mounts and chargers can skew sensors).

Bottom Line

Stubborn GPS problems in Android Auto with Google Maps are usually fixable by addressing the chain: correct location mode (High accuracy), correct Google Maps permission (ideally Allow all the time), no background throttling for Android Auto/Maps, and a stable USB connection. Start with quick triage, then work through permissions and battery optimization, then caches, then hardware/link checks.

If you want the fastest “most likely to work” sequence: verify High accuracy location + allow all the time for Google Maps, disable battery optimization for Android Auto and Google Maps, clear Android Auto cache, and retest outdoors. If it still fails, switch USB cable/port and test with a different navigation app to isolate whether the issue is Android Auto or GPS itself.
