Stringing—also called oozing or “hairy prints”—is the fine filament left between parts when the nozzle travels without printing. Start with your printer and filament’s recommended profile, then test retraction and temperature in small steps. If those checks do not help, investigate damp filament, travel paths, and nozzle or hotend condition rather than applying a universal setting.
What causes stringing on an FDM print?
Stringing happens when filament continues to flow from the nozzle as the printhead moves between separate areas of a model. The strands may look like cobwebs, hairs, or small blobs. Prusa identifies excessive nozzle temperature and incorrect retraction as common causes; moisture, nozzle residue, and hotend heat-dissipation or assembly problems can also contribute. Bambu Lab additionally lists long travel moves with insufficient retraction, low-density filament settings, and worn or oversized nozzles as possible causes.

Where the strands appear can help guide troubleshooting: strings mainly spanning travel moves point toward retraction, temperature, or travel-path settings, while persistent oozing deserves a check of the filament and hardware too. This is a practical clue, not a definitive diagnosis.

How to troubleshoot stringing, one change at a time
- Restore a known-good baseline. Start with the manufacturer’s default printer and material profile; Prusa recommends its factory presets in PrusaSlicer instead of arbitrary setting changes. Note the printer and extruder arrangement, filament type, nozzle temperature, and retraction settings. Change one variable per test so you can tell what helped.
- Test retraction using your printer’s profile. Retraction pulls filament back during travel and resumes extrusion at the next print location. Adjust it in small, controlled tests, following your machine’s profile or documentation: distance and speed depend on the printer, extruder design, and material. Flexible filament stretches and may need additional tuning. For context, Prusa’s guidance caps retraction length at 2 mm on the MK2.5/S and MK3/S/+; its Bowden MINI/MINI+ preset uses 3.2 mm. Those are model-specific examples, not settings to copy onto other printers.
- Try a modest nozzle-temperature reduction. Prusa suggests testing a decrease of 5–10 °C, and Bambu Lab also recommends a moderate decrease. Keep the nozzle within the filament’s suitable printing range. Check for new symptoms such as inconsistent extrusion or poor layer bonding; a lower temperature is not automatically better.
- Check whether the filament is damp. Moisture can cause stringing. If possible, compare with another spool; otherwise, follow drying instructions for that specific material. The cited manufacturers do not establish one drying temperature or duration for all filaments. A filament dryer may be useful if the material and its condition justify drying, but it is not a universal fix.
- Reduce unnecessary travel across exposed areas. In PrusaSlicer, consider options such as avoiding perimeter crossings, wiping while retracting, or printing objects sequentially. Bambu Lab suggests reducing model spacing and enabling “Avoid crossing walls” in Bambu Studio. The best option depends on the model and slicer; sequential printing needs enough clearance to avoid toolhead collisions.
- Inspect the nozzle and hotend if the profile and filament checks fail. Clean filament residue from the nozzle. If you recently changed a hotend component, review its assembly; poor heat dissipation can also be a factor. Check for nozzle wear or an oversized nozzle before considering replacement. These are escalation checks, not reasons to replace parts by default.
How to choose the next adjustment
| What to consider | How it affects the next test |
|---|---|
| Printer and extruder design | Use the approved profile for that machine. Retraction guidance for one direct-drive or Bowden setup does not automatically apply to another. |
| Filament type and condition | Use the material’s suitable temperature range; check whether moisture may be contributing and follow material-specific drying instructions. |
| Where strings appear | Strands mainly across travel moves make retraction, temperature, and path settings sensible early checks. Broader oozing also warrants checking filament and hardware. |
| Quality trade-offs | After a temperature change, watch extrusion consistency and layer bonding. After a travel or retraction change, check the resulting print rather than assuming fewer strings mean every setting is improved. |
| Prevention, diagnosis, or cleanup | Profiles, retraction, temperature, filament condition, and travel paths address printing causes. A heat gun only removes strands from a finished print. |
UltiMaker gives broad educational ranges of 5–8 mm for Bowden and 1–3 mm for direct-drive setups, and also suggests tuning temperature. Those ranges are general guidance, not a substitute for a printer-specific profile; the different Prusa examples show why one retraction distance cannot be treated as universal. The manufacturers do not report a controlled head-to-head test establishing which fix works best.

- 【Fits Most FDM Printers】 Designed for most 1.75mm FDM printers with external, top-mounted, or open spool holders. Each spool measures 140mm in diameter and 36mm in width, with a 53mm center hole. For Bambu Lab AMS or AMS lite, search MakerWorld for a compatible 250g spool adapter before use
Remove strings from a finished print
Address the cause before cleanup so the next print is less likely to have the same problem. For a finished part, Prusa describes briefly aiming a heat gun at the strings at around 200 °C for one or two seconds. Longer exposure can deform the print, so keep the heat moving and use caution. This is optional post-processing, not a preventive fix.
