How to Fix Streamlabs Desktop Capture Card Issues

Work out whether the problem is a missing Video Capture Device, black input, stutter, or audio routing issue, then follow the matching Streamlabs Desktop checks.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a capture card is missing, shows a black screen, stutters, or has no sound in Streamlabs Desktop, first identify the source and symptom. A card added as a Video Capture Device has different fixes from a black-screen Game Capture source, and audio capture is separate from audio monitoring. Work through the checks below in order, using console- or model-specific steps only when they match your setup.

Start with the source and symptom

In Streamlabs Desktop, a capture card is normally added as a Video Capture Device. Game Capture, Window Capture, and desktop audio are different source types. Confirm which source is failing before changing settings: a black card input is not the same problem as a black Game Capture source.

  • Card missing from the device list: check whether another application is using it and whether you selected the correct device entry.
  • No picture or a black picture: verify the card source, signal path, and any relevant console setting.
  • Stuttering video: check the selected device and try the buffering setting.
  • No sound: follow the audio checks separately; a meter that moves while headphones are silent usually points to monitoring or playback output, not missing capture.

Streamlabs’ capture-card troubleshooting guide, attributed to Kevin and last updated April 22, 2025, is the central reference for these checks: Streamlabs capture-card troubleshooting. Device labels and vendor downloads can change, so confirm model-specific instructions with the card maker.

Fix a capture card that is missing

Release the card from other software

  1. Close the capture card maker’s utility and any other streaming, recording, or camera application that might be using the card. Streamlabs’ advice is to “Close out of any other software that could be using the device.”
  2. In Streamlabs Desktop, remove duplicate capture-card sources from scenes. Add the card in one scene, then use Add from existing in other scenes rather than creating another instance for each scene.
  3. If the card still does not appear, restart the computer to clear a process that may still hold the device.

Select the card’s actual device entry

Open the properties for the card’s Video Capture Device source and select the capture card or its vendor-driver entry. A similarly named webcam or other device is not interchangeable. Some models require their manufacturer utility or a special device entry; Streamlabs’ specific instruction for the Elgato 4K60 Pro should not be generalized to other cards.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

Check drivers and connection

Confirm the console or second computer is connected to the card’s input as intended, and that the card is connected to the computer using its required interface. If a driver or utility reinstall is appropriate, get it from the card maker’s official support page and follow the instructions for your exact model. Streamlabs’ guide points to download resources for AVerMedia, Elgato, and Razer; it also describes a Device Manager reinstall path for Magewell and Blackmagic devices. Avoid third-party driver-download utilities.

USB Elgato power checks

For a USB-connected Elgato card, Streamlabs suggests trying the Windows High Performance power mode and disabling USB selective suspend. These are model- and connection-context checks, not universal requirements for every capture card.

Fix a black or absent picture

Verify the signal path

  1. Check that the console or source computer is sending video to the capture card’s input, and that the card is connected to the computer.
  2. In the Video Capture Device properties, verify that the selected device is the card, not a similarly named camera or input.
  3. Check that the console’s output format is supported by the card and that the source is active. If you use a vendor utility, confirm whether it receives the signal there before changing Streamlabs settings.

PS4 gameplay: check HDCP only when applicable

For PlayStation 4 gameplay capture, Streamlabs’ guide says to disable HDCP under Settings > System. This is a PS4-specific step; it is not a general capture-card fix and should not be applied to unrelated devices or use cases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Distinguish a card-input problem from Game Capture

If the failing source is Game Capture, rather than the card’s Video Capture Device, use the separate checks in Streamlabs’ Game Capture black-screen guide: delete and re-add the source, restart Streamlabs as administrator, disable third-party overlays, update software and drivers, or try borderless/window capture. These steps target game capture and do not diagnose a card that has no input signal.

  • 【What You Get】Includes: HDMI Capture Card, USB 3.0 to USB-C Adapter, User Manual. Tips: Make sure your tablet’s OTG function is enabled before connecting. Test your HDMI device with a monitor first to confirm video and audio output, then connect to the Video Capture Card for recording.

Fix stuttering capture-card video

  1. Open the Video Capture Device properties and make sure the actual capture card is selected.
  2. Try setting Buffering to Disable in the source properties, then check whether the picture becomes stable.
  3. If the issue continues, check the card’s connection and signal path, and confirm the source resolution and format are supported by the model. Change one setting at a time so you can identify which adjustment matters.

Disabling buffering is a troubleshooting option, not a guaranteed cure. If your card maker documents a model-specific format or driver requirement, use that guidance rather than assuming one Streamlabs setting fits every device.

Improve poor image quality on an Elgato card

  1. Close Streamlabs Desktop.
  2. In the Elgato software, set the Quality slider to Best.
  3. Check the standard-definition conversion and stretch options if they apply to the input.
  4. If appropriate for the card and incoming signal, try a custom resolution of 1920×1080.

Before forcing a resolution, check what the source outputs and what the exact card model supports. A mismatched setting can make the image disappear rather than improve it.

Fix capture-card audio that is missing or inaudible

First determine whether Streamlabs receives audio

  1. Make sure the console or source computer is producing sound.
  2. Watch the capture card’s mixer meter in Streamlabs while audio is playing.
  3. Confirm the mixer channel is not muted.
  4. In the capture source properties, check Audio Output Mode and any selected custom audio device.

If the meter does not move, focus on the source’s audio mode, selected device, signal path, and console routing. If the meter moves but you cannot hear the audio, the capture may be working: check Windows’ playback output and Streamlabs’ Audio Monitoring Device setting. Monitoring controls what you hear locally; enabling Monitor and Output can create echo if the same sound is also heard through another route.

Apply console routing advice only to the matching setup

Streamlabs notes that a USB-only PS4 headset cannot send its audio through the capture card. Its guide also describes changing PS4 output to TV or AV amplifier for supported headset configurations, and an Xbox One party-chat output setting. These instructions depend on the console, headset, and wiring; do not apply them to other consoles or assume they fit every headset setup.

Common failure patterns and next checks

What you see Likely area to check Next action
Card absent from the source device list Another app owns the device, duplicate source instances, or incorrect device selection Close competing software, keep one source instance shared across scenes, then restart if needed.
Video Capture Device is black Wrong device entry, disconnected or unsupported signal path, or applicable console output setting Verify the card and connections; use only relevant platform-specific settings.

No audio meter activity Capture source audio mode, muted mixer channel, signal, or console routing Check the source properties and matching console/headset configuration.

What to collect if the problem remains

Capture-card troubleshooting depends on the exact setup. Before contacting Streamlabs or the card maker, note:

  • Capture card make and model, operating system, and Streamlabs Desktop version.
  • Whether the source is Video Capture Device or Game Capture.
  • Console or second-PC model, connection path, and input/output resolution.
  • Whether the issue is missing device, absent picture, stutter, or absent audio; for audio, whether the mixer meter moves.
  • Any error message and which model-specific driver or utility steps you have already tried.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the underlying goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a different workflow from fixing a capture card: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera. Nothing needs to stay on at home, including your computer or OBS. Every slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is YouTube-only. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
