How to fix Steam error codes -7 and -130?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Steam error codes -7 and -130 usually appear when the Steam client cannot load web-based content, such as the Store, Community, profile pages, or parts of the Workshop. The client may still open, and your library may still be visible, but pages that depend on Steam’s embedded browser fail to connect or display a loading error.

These errors are most often caused by temporary Steam server issues, a weak or misconfigured internet connection, corrupted Steam web cache, DNS problems, proxy or VPN conflicts, or security software blocking Steam’s web components. In many cases, the fix is simple: restart Steam, check whether Steam services are online, clear the client’s cache, or refresh your network settings.

What Steam error codes -7 and -130 mean

Steam error codes -7 and -130 usually appear when the Steam client cannot load a web-based page inside the app. This can affect the Steam Store, Community, user profiles, discussions, inventories, market pages, or other areas that rely on Steam’s built-in browser. In many cases, your installed games and Library may still work, but Store or Community tabs show a blank page, a failed loading message, or one of these codes instead.

Error code -7 is commonly associated with a general connection or page-loading failure. Steam is trying to reach a web address, but the request does not complete correctly. That may happen because of a temporary Steam server issue, a weak or interrupted internet connection, corrupted Steam web cache, a DNS lookup problem, or local security software blocking part of the request. It can also appear after waking a PC from sleep, switching networks, changing DNS settings, or using public Wi-Fi that requires a browser login before full access is allowed.

Error code -130 is also tied to Steam’s inability to reach online content, but it is often seen when the client cannot connect to Steam’s web services reliably. Users may encounter it as “Failed to load web page” or when the Store refuses to open even though other websites work in a normal browser. Common causes include cached Steam browser data, misconfigured proxy settings, VPN routing problems, firewall rules, antivirus web shields, DNS resolver failures, or a router that is temporarily mishandling connections.

Where these errors usually show up

  • Steam Store: the front page, game pages, shopping cart, or checkout may not load.
  • Steam Community: profiles, discussions, guides, artwork, screenshots, and activity feeds can fail.
  • Steam Market and inventory pages: item listings or inventory contents may appear blank or unreachable.
  • Login-related web panels: account prompts, age checks, or embedded browser windows can fail inside the client.

These errors do not always mean your Steam account is broken, your games are damaged, or Steam has been banned on your network. They are usually connection-layer or browser-layer problems between the Steam client and Steam’s web infrastructure. That distinction matters because reinstalling games rarely helps; the fix is more likely to involve refreshing Steam’s internal browser data, correcting DNS, removing a bad proxy, adjusting firewall rules, or repairing the Steam client itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is also possible for Steam’s own services to be partly unavailable. For example, the Friends network might work while Store pages fail, or the website might load in Chrome while the Steam client still shows error -7 or -130. Steam uses several services and content delivery endpoints, so a failure can be limited to one feature, one region, one ISP route, or only the embedded browser inside the client. The troubleshooting steps that follow should be handled from the simplest checks first before changing deeper network settings.

Quick checks before changing settings

Before editing DNS settings, resetting Steam, or changing firewall rules, rule out the simple causes first. Steam error codes -7 and -130 often appear when the embedded Steam web browser cannot load Store, Community, profile, inventory, or news pages. That failure can be temporary, local to your connection, or caused by a stuck Steam process. The checks below take only a few minutes and can prevent unnecessary changes to a working network setup.

Check whether Steam is having an outage

Open a normal web browser and try loading the Steam Store at store.steampowered.com and the Steam Community at steamcommunity.com. If both fail in your browser as well as in the Steam client, the issue may not be limited to Steam’s built-in browser. Also check Steam’s status using a trusted third-party status page or by searching for recent reports from other users. If many users are reporting Store or Community problems at the same time, wait and try again later rather than changing your PC settings.

Restart Steam completely

Closing the Steam window is not always enough, because Steam may keep background processes running. Exit it fully, then reopen it:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Click Steam in the top-left corner of the client.
  2. Select Exit, not just the window close button.
  3. Wait 10-20 seconds.
  4. Open Task Manager and end any remaining Steam Client WebHelper or Steam processes if they are still running.
  5. Launch Steam again and test the Store or Community page.

Restart your computer and router

If Steam still shows error -7 or -130, restart Windows or your operating system before making deeper changes. This clears stuck network sessions, failed background services, and frozen Steam WebHelper processes. After the PC restarts, power-cycle your router or modem as well: unplug it, wait about 30 seconds, plug it back in, and wait until the internet connection is fully restored. Then open Steam and test the page again.

Test another website and another device

Use your regular browser to visit several websites, not just Steam. Try a search engine, a news site, and another login-based service. If other sites are slow or fail to load, the Steam error may be part of a broader internet problem. If possible, test Steam’s website on another device connected to the same network, such as a phone on Wi-Fi. If Steam fails on every device using the same router, focus on the network, DNS, ISP, or router. If Steam works on other devices, the problem is more likely on the affected computer.

Try a different connection

A fast way to separate a Steam issue from a home network issue is to switch networks temporarily. For example, connect your PC to a mobile hotspot, or disable Wi-Fi and use Ethernet if available. If Steam loads normally on a different connection, your original network may have DNS problems, router filtering, ISP routing issues, or a security device blocking Steam web traffic. If the error follows the computer across mulle networks, continue with local fixes such as clearing Steam’s cache, checking proxy settings, and repairing the client.

  • Check for pending updates: install Windows, network driver, and Steam client updates before deeper troubleshooting.

Clear Steam browser cache and download cache

Steam error codes -7 and -130 often appear when the built-in Steam browser cannot load Store, Community, profile, or checkout pages correctly. If the internet connection works elsewhere, the next practical step is to clear Steam’s own cached web data. Steam stores cookies, page data, images, scripts, and download metadata locally, and a corrupted cache entry can keep forcing the client to load a broken version of a page even after the original connection issue is gone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with the Steam browser cache because it directly affects web-based areas inside the client. Open Steam, select Steam in the top-left corner, then choose Settings. Go to In Game or Web Browser, depending on your Steam client version, and use the options to delete browser data, such as Delete Web Browser Data or Delete Web Browser Cache. Confirm the prompt, then fully close Steam from the tray icon and reopen it. After restarting, test the Store or Community page again from inside the client.

  1. Open the Steam client.
  2. Go to Steam > Settings.
  3. Find the browser-related section, commonly under In Game.
  4. Select Delete Web Browser Data or the equivalent cache-clearing option.
  5. Restart Steam completely, not just by closing the main window.

Next, clear the download cache. Although this cache is mainly tied to game downloads and updates, it can also affect how Steam communicates with its content servers and account services. In Steam, go to Steam > Settings > Downloads, then select Clear Download Cache. Steam will ask for confirmation and then sign you out. After the client restarts, log back in and check whether the Store, Library download page, or Community pages load without error -7 or -130.

If Steam will not stay open long enough to clear these options, you can remove some cached files manually after exiting the client. Close Steam completely, including the background process from Task Manager if needed. Then open the Steam installation folder, usually C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam on Windows. Look for cache-related folders such as appcache and rename it to something like appcache_old instead of deleting it immediately. Launch Steam again, and it will rebuild fresh cache files automatically. If everything works, the old renamed folder can be removed later.

  • Browser cache: affects Store, Community, profiles, market pages, and login web views inside Steam.
  • Download cache: affects update metadata, download server communication, and some Steam service requests.
  • Appcache folder: stores local Steam client web and application data that can become stale or corrupted.

After clearing caches, avoid changing mulle network settings at the same time. First test Steam normally, then test a specific page such as Store, Community, or a game discussion page. If the page loads in an external browser but still fails in Steam, the issue is more likely tied to Steam’s embedded browser data, client files, or security software filtering the client. If both Steam and your normal browser fail to load Steam pages, move on to DNS and network troubleshooting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix DNS and network connection problems

Steam error codes -7 and -130 often appear when the Steam client cannot resolve or reach Steam web addresses used by the Store, Community, profile pages, or embedded browser. If clearing Steam’s cache did not help, focus next on DNS resolution and the local network path between your PC and Steam’s servers. These steps are safe for most home connections and can fix stale DNS records, broken IP assignments, router glitches, or unstable connectivity.

Start by refreshing your connection. Close Steam completely, including from the system tray, then restart your PC and router. Unplug the router’s power cable for about 30 seconds, reconnect it, and wait until the internet connection is fully restored. If you are on Wi-Fi, move closer to the router or temporarily use an Ethernet cable. A weak wireless signal can load normal websites while still causing Steam’s built-in browser to fail or time out.

Flush DNS and reset the network stack on Windows

Windows keeps DNS and network configuration data locally. If that data is outdated or corrupted, Steam may fail even when other apps seem fine. Open Command Prompt as administrator, then run these commands one at a time:

  • ipconfig /flushdns clears cached DNS lookup records.
  • ipconfig /release drops the current local IP address lease.
  • ipconfig /renew requests a fresh IP address from your router.
  • netsh winsock reset resets Windows socket settings used by network apps.
  • netsh int ip reset resets TCP/IP configuration to default behavior.

After running the commands, restart the computer before opening Steam again. This restart matters because Winsock and TCP/IP resets do not fully apply until Windows reloads the networking components.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Change to a reliable DNS provider

If your internet provider’s DNS servers are slow, filtered, or temporarily failing, Steam pages may return -7 or -130 while other cached sites still load. Switching DNS servers can restore name resolution for Steam domains. In Windows, open Settings > Network & internet, choose your active Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection, open DNS settings, and change DNS assignment from automatic to manual.

Google Public DNS 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4
Quad9 9.9.9.9 149.112.112.112

Save the change, disconnect and reconnect to the network, then launch Steam and test the Store or Community tab. If your router manages DNS for every device, you can also set these DNS addresses in the router’s admin page instead of only on one PC.

Check for local network restrictions

If Steam works on a phone using mobile data but fails on the same phone over Wi-Fi, the issue is likely your router, ISP DNS, or local network rules. Disable router-level parental controls, ad-blocking DNS, content filters, or custom security features temporarily and test again. On public, school, hotel, or workplace networks, Steam web services may be blocked outright; in that case, use a trusted home network or contact the network administrator.

Finally, test basic access outside the Steam client. Open a browser and visit https://store.steampowered.com and https://steamcommunity.com. If those pages fail in the browser too, continue troubleshooting the connection rather than reinstalling Steam. If they work in the browser but not in Steam, the next areas to check are proxy settings, VPN apps, firewalls, antivirus web shields, and Steam client repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Disable proxy, VPN, firewall, or antivirus interference

If Steam still shows error code -7 or -130 after cache and DNS fixes, something on your connection may be blocking the Steam client’s built-in browser. The Store, Community, friends activity, and profile pages load through web requests inside Steam, so proxy settings, VPN routing, firewall rules, or HTTPS scanning from antivirus software can prevent those pages from opening even when your regular browser works.

Turn off proxy settings

A misconfigured proxy can send Steam web traffic to an unreachable server, causing “failed to load web page” errors. On Windows, open Settings > Network & Internet > Proxy. Turn off Use a proxy server unless you specifically need it for work or school. Keep Automatically detect settings enabled, then restart Steam. You can also check the older Internet Options panel by opening Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections > LAN settings and making sure no unwanted proxy is enabled.

Test without a VPN

VPNs can trigger Steam web loading problems if the selected server has poor routing, blocked ports, DNS conflicts, or an IP range that Steam temporarily distrusts. Disconnect the VPN completely, exit the VPN app from the system tray, and restart Steam. If Steam works afterward, reconnect using a different VPN region or enable split tunneling so Steam bypasses the VPN. If you use a privacy-focused VPN with ad blocking, malware filtering, or custom DNS, disable those extras for a test because they can block Steam domains or embedded web content.

Allow Steam through the firewall

Firewalls may allow Steam to log in but still block its web helper process, which is commonly involved in Store and Community pages. In Windows Security, go to Firewall & network protection > Allow an app through firewall. Confirm that Steam, steam.exe, and steamwebhelper.exe are allowed on your active network type, usually Private for home networks. If the entries look duplicated or outdated, remove them and launch Steam again so Windows prompts you to allow access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Allow Steam on private networks for home Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
  • Use public network access only when needed, such as on hotel or campus Wi-Fi.
  • Check third-party firewall suites separately, as they may ignore Windows Firewall rules.
  • Avoid creating broad “allow all” rules; allow the Steam executables instead.

Temporarily disable antivirus web filtering

Some antivirus tools include web shields, HTTPS inspection, banking protection, safe browsing, or anti-tracker features that intercept encrypted traffic. These features can break Steam’s internal browser and produce -7 or -130 while leaving game launches unaffected. Temporarily disable only the web protection module, then fully close and reopen Steam. If the error disappears, add Steam’s installation folder and executables to the antivirus allow list rather than leaving protection disabled.

For a standard Steam installation, the main files are usually in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam. Add exceptions for steam.exe, steamwebhelper.exe, and the Steam folder itself if your security software supports folder exclusions. After changing security rules, reboot the PC or at least restart Steam from Steam > Exit so the client starts with the new permissions. If you are on a work, school, or shared network, the block may be enforced by the network administrator; in that case, test from a mobile hotspot or another home network to confirm whether the restriction is local to that connection.

Reset Steam configuration and repair the client

If Steam error code -7 or -130 keeps appearing after cache, DNS, firewall, proxy, and VPN checks, the Steam client itself may have a damaged local configuration. This can affect the built-in Steam browser that loads the Store, Community, profiles, inventory pages, and other web-based areas. Resetting Steam’s configuration forces the client to rebuild connection settings without deleting your installed games.

Reset Steam with the flushconfig command

The safest client-level reset is Steam’s built-in flushconfig command. It clears local Steam configuration data and makes Steam recreate it the next time it starts. Before running it, close Steam completely: open the Steam menu and choose Exit, then check Task Manager and end any remaining steam.exe or Steam Client WebHelper processes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type steam://flushconfig and press Enter.
  3. Confirm the prompt that appears.
  4. Restart your PC.
  5. Open Steam again and sign in when prompted.

After this reset, Steam may ask you to log in again and may re-check some local settings. Your game installations should remain in place, but shortcuts, remembered account data, or interface preferences may be refreshed. Once Steam opens, test the Store and Community pages before changing more settings.

Repair the Steam service

On Windows, Steam uses a background service for updates, permissions, and some client operations. If that service is broken or registered incorrectly, the client may open but fail to load web content reliably. You can repair it from an elevated Command Prompt.

  1. Close Steam completely.
  2. Open the Start menu, type cmd, then choose Run as administrator.
  3. Enter the repair command using your Steam installation path. For the default location, use: “C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\bin\SteamService.exe” /repair
  4. Wait for the command to finish, then restart Windows.
  5. Launch Steam and check whether the affected pages now load.

If Steam is installed in a different folder, adjust the path accordingly. For example, if Steam is installed on another drive, browse to that Steam folder and locate bin\SteamService.exe. Running the wrong path will simply fail to find the file, so verify the location before retrying.

Reinstall Steam without removing your games

If flushing the configuration and repairing the service do not help, reinstalling the Steam client can replace damaged program files while preserving your game library. First, close Steam. Then back up the steamapps folder inside your Steam directory, since this folder contains installed games and library data. You can copy it to another folder on the same drive or to an external drive if space allows.

Next, uninstall Steam from Windows settings, download the latest installer from the official Steam website, and install it again. After installation, place the backed-up steamapps folder back into the Steam directory if needed, then open Steam. The client should detect the existing games; if a game shows as not installed, choose Install to the same library folder and Steam will usually discover the existing files instead of downloading everything again.

Once the repaired or reinstalled client is running, test the exact area that previously showed error -7 or -130, such as the Store homepage, a Community discussion, your profile, or the inventory page. If these pages load inside Steam but not in a normal browser, the remaining problem is likely browser-specific. If they fail both inside Steam and outside Steam, continue with broader network checks or wait and test again in case Steam’s web services are temporarily unavailable in your region.

What to do if the error still appears

If Steam error code -7 or -130 still appears after clearing caches, changing DNS, checking firewall rules, disabling proxy or VPN software, and repairing the client, treat the problem as either account-specific, device-specific, network-specific, or service-side. The fastest way to narrow it down is to test Steam access in a few controlled ways instead of repeating the same fixes.

Test Steam outside the desktop client

Open the Steam Store or Steam Community in a normal web browser and then in a private or incognito window. Try these pages directly: store.steampowered.com and steamcommunity.com. If they load in the browser but not in the Steam client, the issue is probably still tied to the Steam client’s embedded browser, local configuration, or security software hooking into Steam. If the pages fail in every browser too, the cause is more likely DNS, routing, ISP filtering, router configuration, or a wider Steam outage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Works in browser, fails in Steam: reinstall or fully repair Steam, then retest without overlays or third-party injectors.
  • Fails in browser and Steam: test a different DNS server, router, or internet connection.
  • Works on another device on the same network: focus on the affected PC’s network adapter, hosts file, firewall, or antivirus.
  • Fails on every device on the same network: focus on the router, ISP, DNS provider, or temporary Steam availability.

Check for regional or Steam service problems

Before making more system changes, check whether Steam services are having trouble. Use Steam’s official status indicators where available, or compare reports from other users in your region. A partial outage can affect the Store, Community, inventory, profile pages, or login webviews while game downloads and chat still work. In that case, error -7 or -130 may disappear on its own once Steam’s web services recover.

Also try a different network for a short test. Connect through a mobile hotspot, another Wi-Fi network, or a different ISP if possible. If Steam loads immediately on the alternate connection, your original network may be blocking or failing to resolve Steam domains. Restart the router again, update router firmware if it is old, remove custom DNS filtering rules, and check parental controls, ad-blocking DNS, Pi-hole rules, or security gateway settings that may block Steam web addresses.

Inspect local blocks and reinstall only if needed

On Windows, check the hosts file for entries related to Steam, Valve, steamcommunity.com, or steampowered.com. The file is usually located at C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts. Remove only entries you recognize as unwanted or suspicious, then save the file as administrator and flush DNS again. If you use enterprise security software, school networks, workplace networks, or managed DNS, Steam web pages may be restricted by policy rather than broken locally.

  1. Test Steam Store and Community in a regular browser and private window.
  2. Try another device on the same network.
  3. Try the affected PC on a mobile hotspot or different connection.
  4. Check Steam service status and recent outage reports.
  5. Inspect the hosts file and any DNS filtering tools.
  6. If only the client fails, uninstall Steam and reinstall it from the official website.

When reinstalling Steam, avoid deleting your game library unless necessary. Uninstall the client, download the latest installer from Steam’s official site, and install it again. If your games are stored in a separate Steam library folder, you can add that folder again after reinstalling. If the error still appears after testing another network and a clean client install, collect screenshots, timestamps, your region, DNS provider, ISP, and the troubleshooting steps already tried, then contact Steam Support with those details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Steam error codes -7 and -130 the same problem?

They are closely related, but not always identical. Both usually mean the Steam client failed to load a web-based page such as the Store, Community, profile pages, or discussions. The cause is often a connection, DNS, cache, proxy, VPN, firewall, or Steam web service issue rather than a problem with your game files.

Can Steam error -130 or -7 happen even if my internet works in a browser?

Yes, Steam can fail to load its built-in browser pages even when Chrome, Edge, or Firefox work normally. This can happen because Steam uses its own cached web data, client configuration, DNS resolution, and network rules. Clearing the Steam web browser cache, flushing DNS, and checking firewall or proxy settings often fixes it.

What should I try first before changing network settings?

Start by restarting Steam completely from the system tray, then reboot your PC and router. Check whether Steam’s services are down by visiting the Steam Status page or trying the Store in a normal web browser. If only the Steam client is affected, clear Steam’s browser cache and download cache before making deeper changes.

Will clearing the Steam download cache delete my installed games?

No, clearing the download cache does not remove installed games or saved data. It may sign you out of Steam and reset temporary download-related files, so you will need to log in again. This is a safe troubleshooting step when Store pages, Community pages, or downloads behave incorrectly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if the error still appears after clearing cache and changing DNS?

Disable any proxy, VPN, web filtering tool, or antivirus web shield temporarily to test whether it is blocking Steam. Then allow Steam through your firewall and try resetting Steam’s configuration with the steam://flushconfig command. If the problem continues, reinstall or repair the Steam client while keeping the steamapps folder so your installed games are preserved.

Bottom Line

Steam error codes -7 and -130 usually point to a connection, DNS, cache, firewall, proxy/VPN, or Steam WebHelper issue that prevents the client from loading Store, Community, or other web-based pages. Start with the fastest fixes first: restart Steam and your PC, check Steam’s server status, clear the Steam browser cache, and test your connection in a regular browser.

If the problem continues, move through the deeper fixes: flush DNS, change DNS servers, disable proxy or VPN settings, allow Steam through your firewall, reset network settings, or repair/reinstall the Steam client. Work through the steps in order, and you should be able to identify whether the issue is local to your device, your network, or Steam itself.
