How to Fix Spotify Error Code 4 on Windows

If the Spotify Windows app reports Error Code 4 while other sites load, first confirm Offline mode is off, then use a few comparisons to find out whether the problem is your connection or the desktop app.

The fastest way to deal with Spotify Error Code 4 on Windows is to rule out Offline mode first, then run three simple comparisons: other apps and websites, the Spotify web player or another device, and a different network. Those results tell you whether the fault sits in your connection, in the Spotify desktop app, or in the network path between them. They point you toward the likely area; they do not prove a single root cause, so the steps below move from the simplest checks to the more involved ones.

What Error Code 4 means

Error Code 4 is a message that appears in the Spotify Windows desktop app. In user reports it appears as “not able to go online” or “unable to find internet connection,” often while the computer is clearly online. The wording comes from users describing the symptom in Spotify Community threads. Spotify does not publish a formal definition for this code, and the community reports do not show that it always has the same cause. Treat it as a symptom label: the app believes it cannot reach Spotify, and the reason could be local to Windows, the network, a security product, or the app installation itself.

Step-by-step fix sequence

Work through these in order. Stop when Spotify connects, but still run the later checks if the problem returns.

1. Turn off Offline mode

Open the Spotify desktop app and click the three-dot menu in the top-left area of the window. Open File and confirm that Offline mode is switched off. Spotify’s current help instructions describe this path. If Offline mode was on, the app may show limited content or connection messages even when the network is fine, so this is the first thing to clear.

2. Check whether the internet works outside Spotify

Open two or three unrelated websites and, if you have them, another internet-connected app such as a browser-based email client or a messaging app. If those fail too, the problem is with your Wi-Fi or internet connection, and Spotify cannot fix that from inside the app. Spotify’s official offline troubleshooting suggests three actions:

  • Turn Wi-Fi off, wait about 30 seconds, and turn it back on.
  • Restart your home router by following the instructions from the router maker or your internet provider.
  • On a school, office, or public network, ask the network administrator whether Spotify or streaming services are restricted. Shared networks sometimes block them, and changing those settings yourself is not a fix you should attempt without permission.

If another Wi-Fi network or a phone hotspot is available, try it. If Spotify works on that network but not on the original one, Spotify’s guidance is to contact the provider of the original connection.

3. Compare the desktop app with the web player or another device

Open Spotify in a browser on the same PC and, if possible, run the Spotify app on a phone or tablet connected to the same network. Then interpret the result this way:

What you see What it suggests Next step
Web player works; Windows app shows Error Code 4 The problem is most likely specific to the desktop app or its Windows network path Continue to steps 4 to 6
Web player and other devices also fail The problem is more likely on the network or on Spotify’s side Return to step 2, then check Spotify’s status and ongoing-issues channels
Everything works on another network Your home or current network path is the probable cause Restart networking equipment, then contact your provider if the problem persists
Problem began suddenly for everyone you know A service-side outage is possible Check Spotify’s official status information before changing settings on your PC

These comparisons narrow the search. A result that matches one row does not confirm the cause, so keep testing if the next step does not resolve things.

4. Check the firewall and security software

Spotify’s official “Spotify is offline” troubleshooting page includes this instruction: “Check your firewall (if you use one) to see if it has Spotify set as an exception.” Look in the firewall or security product you already have installed and confirm Spotify is allowed. Do not turn off your protection permanently to test this; if you need a temporary test, re-enable protection immediately afterward. On a managed work or school computer, leave policy-controlled security settings to the administrator.

5. Check the proxy setting

Spotify Community guidance recommends confirming that Spotify’s own proxy setting is “No proxy” if you do not use a proxy. Then check Windows itself: open Settings > Network & internet > Proxy and make sure the manual proxy option is off unless your organization or VPN requires it. If a proxy is required, do not guess its address; take it from the administrator or the VPN provider.

6. Look for conflicting software

Security tools, VPN clients, and network filters can intercept traffic from the desktop app. A Spotify Community moderator’s consolidated answer suggests two checks: test Windows in Safe Mode with Networking to see whether the app connects when third-party software is not loaded, and review antivirus or firewall rules for Spotify. If Spotify works in Safe Mode with Networking, the likely culprit is software that starts with Windows, so temporarily disable one tool at a time and retest. Restart normally when you finish.

To reach Safe Mode with Networking on Windows 10 or 11, go to Settings > System > Recovery, select Restart now next to Advanced startup, then choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart and press 5.

7. Clear DNS and review the hosts file

The same community guidance includes two lower-level checks. Flush the DNS cache by opening Command Prompt and running:

ipconfig /flushdns

Then look at the hosts file at C:WindowsSystem32driversetchosts. Open it in Notepad as an administrator and look for entries that mention Spotify. Before you change anything, copy the file to a safe location so you can restore it. Remove only entries you do not recognize as deliberate; deleting unrelated lines can break other connections. Do not add entries from random websites.

8. Update or reinstall the network adapter driver only if needed

Community guidance also lists reinstalling the network adapter driver as an option. Use it only after the simpler checks have failed, and create a restore point or note the adapter model first. Reinstalling a driver can remove network access until you reinstall it, so keep a way to get online, such as a phone hotspot or wired connection, before you start.

9. Reinstall Spotify

If the web player and other devices work but the desktop app still fails, a clean reinstall is the next step. Spotify’s official offline troubleshooting links to its reinstall instructions, and Spotify Community guidance recommends a clean reinstall. Uninstall Spotify from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, restart the PC, then install again. Spotify’s own download and the Microsoft Store version are both possibilities; if the problem persists with one, the community advice is to try the other.

A reinstall can clear app-specific damage, but a successful reinstall does not prove the network was at fault in the first place. If the same error returns after a reinstall, the issue is more likely in the network path, a security product, or the Windows configuration, so return to the earlier steps.

What is established and what is not

  • Spotify’s official support covers Offline mode, connection checks, router restarts, network restrictions, and firewall exceptions.
  • Proxy, DNS, hosts-file, Safe Mode, and driver steps come from Spotify Community guidance. These are published by the community, not by Spotify as a formal error reference, and they are not confirmed to fix every Error Code 4 case.
  • Microsoft’s Windows support documentation covers general Wi-Fi and proxy troubleshooting, but it does not define this Spotify error.
  • No reliable prevalence or success-rate figures are available for this error.

Because the evidence does not identify a universal cause, you should not buy a new router, VPN, security suite, or repair utility as a first response. The official advice points to settings you already control, your existing network equipment, the network administrator or provider, and a reinstall.
