If your Sony WH-1000XM6 will not connect, first check whether it is a Bluetooth pairing problem, an automatic connection to another device, or only a Sound Connect app detection problem. Disconnect any other device using the headphones, restart the playback device and headphones, then forget the saved WH-1000XM6 Bluetooth entry and pair again. The steps below start with reversible checks and reserve initialization—which erases stored pairing information—for later.
Identify what is failing
Bluetooth audio pairing and Sound Connect detection are related but not identical. Use the symptom to choose where to start:

- The WH-1000XM6 does not appear in Bluetooth settings: check for another device holding the connection, then remove any stale pairing and pair again.
- It appears but will not reconnect: forget the saved entry, restart the playback device, and pair again.
- Audio works but Sound Connect cannot find the headphones: follow the app-specific steps below.
- The connection drops after pairing: test nearby with fewer potential sources of radio interference.
Sony’s Sound Connect detection troubleshooting starts with updating the app. Sony’s general Bluetooth pairing guidance also recommends checking other connected devices, interference, and whether the headphones work with another playback device.

A phone or computer connected previously may reconnect automatically and take the headphones’ connection. Turn off Bluetooth on that other device, or disconnect the WH-1000XM6 from it, before trying to connect to the device you want to use. Sony notes that the last-connected device may connect automatically.

For dropouts or unreliable discovery, bring the headphones and playback device close together and try again away from likely sources of radio interference. Sony identifies crowded places and nearby sources such as microwaves, automatic doors, and traffic signals as possible interference environments. If Sound Connect offers the setting, select Prioritize on stable connection.
Forget the saved pairing and connect again
- Open Bluetooth settings on the phone, tablet, or computer and remove or forget the WH-1000XM6 entry. Menu wording differs by device.
- Restart that playback device.
- Put the headphones into pairing mode and use the playback device’s normal Bluetooth pairing process to connect again. For the model-specific instructions, use Sony’s WH-1000XM6 Help Guide and manuals.
If pairing still fails, try another phone, Walkman, or other Bluetooth playback device. If the headphones connect to the second device, the original host’s Bluetooth settings or software are more likely to be involved. If they fail with multiple hosts, a headphone-side problem becomes more plausible.

If Sound Connect alone cannot find the headphones
If Bluetooth audio works but the app does not detect the WH-1000XM6, update Sony | Sound Connect first. Then work through these steps in order, testing the app after each one:

- Close Sound Connect completely, reopen it, and check for the headphones.
- Remove the WH-1000XM6 from the phone’s Bluetooth settings and pair it again.
- If detection still fails, reinstall Sound Connect.
- Use the model’s reset procedure, then test the app again.
- If needed, initialize the headphones as described in the Help Guide, remove the old Bluetooth entry from the phone, and pair again.
Sony’s model-specific app detection article outlines the update, restart, reset, initialization, and re-pairing path. Sony also published guidance on a WH-1000XM6 Sound Connect display/functionality issue on June 2, 2025, saying the issue was addressed in app version 12.0.3 or later. That is historical guidance for that particular issue, not evidence that every current app detection failure has the same cause.

Reset before you initialize
Sony treats reset and initialization as separate troubleshooting actions. Follow the exact reset instructions in the WH-1000XM6 Help Guide; the button sequence is model-specific, so do not substitute instructions for another Sony headset.
Initialization restores factory settings and deletes the headphones’ stored Bluetooth pairing information. After initializing, remove the old WH-1000XM6 entry from each playback device you plan to use, then pair again. Sony’s Sound Connect troubleshooting and operating-problem guidance place initialization after earlier troubleshooting steps.

When to contact Sony
If the headphones still cannot pair with multiple playback devices after you clear their saved pairings and follow the WH-1000XM6 reset and initialization procedures, contact Sony support or use Sony’s WH-1000XM6 support page to find the applicable repair options. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance says service may be required when these steps do not resolve the issue. The linked support pages are for Sony USA; readers elsewhere should use their regional Sony support site for local service options.
