How to Fix SmartThings Devices That Show as Offline

Check the hub and device separately, then work through power, battery, range, and network checks before re-pairing or resetting anything.

Start by checking the hub’s power and status light, then the affected device’s power, battery, range, and network connection. “Offline” is a status, not a diagnosis: first work out whether one device is affected or the hub and several connected devices are disconnected. Avoid resetting the hub until simpler checks fail.

1. Check whether the hub is powered or updating

Look at the hub’s power connection and LED, and check its status in the SmartThings app. Samsung says a flashing or solid magenta LED means the hub is updating; it may appear as disconnected in the app during the update. Do not unplug or reboot it while that light is showing. Samsung’s SmartThings troubleshooting guide explains this status.

If several devices connected through the same hub are offline, check the hub before troubleshooting each device separately. If only one device is affected, continue with that device’s power and connection.

2. Check the device’s power and battery

Outlet-powered devices

Disconnect the device from power for two minutes, then reconnect it. If it remains offline, try another outlet if practical. Check the device’s own indicator light for an error signal and consult its manual to interpret it.

Battery-powered devices

Confirm that the battery is seated correctly. Remove it for 30 seconds, then reinsert it. Replace it only if it is depleted, using the battery type specified for that model; SmartThings devices do not all use the same battery.

3. Check setup requirements, range, and interference

Complete any required manufacturer setup

Some products must first be set up in the manufacturer’s own app before SmartThings can connect to them. Follow the device’s manual for that initial setup; the required steps depend on the product. Samsung’s troubleshooting instructions and device-connection guidance describe this requirement.

SmartThings Hub 3rd Generation [GP-U999SJVLGDA] Smart Home Automation Hub Home Monitoring Smart Devices - Alexa Google Home Compatible - Zigbee, Z-Wave, Cloud to Cloud Protocols – White
  • Monitor and control compatible devices in your home using a single smartphone app for your phone
  • Automate connected devices in your home and set them to turn on or off when doors are opened, people come and go, and much more

Test the wireless connection

Temporarily move the affected device nearer to the hub, ideally with fewer walls or other obstacles between them, and check its status again. Keep the hub away from the Wi-Fi router and other wireless electronics where possible. Samsung notes that a repeater may extend wireless range, but whether one helps depends on the device, placement, and home layout; it is not a universal fix. See Samsung France’s SmartThings connection guidance.

4. Check Wi-Fi settings if the device uses Wi-Fi

First check whether the Wi-Fi name (SSID) or password changed. If it did, the hub or device may need the updated network details. The update method varies: some products let you change Wi-Fi details in SmartThings, while others have no in-app Wi-Fi setting and must be reset and connected to the account again. Use the instructions for the specific product rather than applying a generic reset procedure. Samsung’s troubleshooting guide covers changed network credentials.

For discovery of a Wi-Fi device over the local network, Samsung says the phone and device must be connected to the same local network. Check that before retrying setup. More connection details are in Samsung’s device-connection guidance.

5. Remove and add the individual device again

If power, range, setup, and network checks do not restore the connection, remove the affected device from SmartThings and add it again. Follow the device’s own instructions if it cannot be added: it may need a device reset, or it may need to be unpaired from the phone before you try pairing again. Resetting one device is different from resetting the hub; use the product-specific steps rather than assuming every model resets the same way. Samsung’s offline-device troubleshooting guide provides further direction.

Wi-Fi 6 ensures smoother performance even in high-traffic environments, allowing multiple devices to connect without compromising speed or reliability. Note: To ensure a stable connection, place the Hub M100 between 6 to 19 feet from the router.

6. Reboot or reset the hub only after checking the model

Hub reboot and reset procedures vary by generation and product. Samsung’s Canada instructions distinguish SmartThings Wi-Fi from regular v1, v2, and v3 hubs, so choose the directions for the exact model rather than using steps meant for another hub. A hub reset can require setting up the hub and connected devices again, making it a later step rather than a first response. Check Samsung Canada’s hub reboot and reset instructions before proceeding. Never interrupt an update indicated by a magenta LED.
