Work through the low-risk tests below before clearing data or resetting Firefox.
First, identify what is slow
Notice whether the video pauses to buffer, plays smoothly only at lower resolution, drops frames, responds slowly to player controls, or whether Firefox as a whole feels sluggish. Those symptoms can have different causes.

- Try a second YouTube video. If only one video is affected, the issue may be specific to that upload or its available quality options.
- Open another site or streaming service. If several sites are slow, look beyond YouTube and Firefox to the network or computer.
- Play the same video in another supported browser or on another device. If it works there, the problem is more likely specific to Firefox or the original device. YouTube also recommends trying another supported device when its troubleshooting steps do not resolve a video problem (YouTube’s streaming and video troubleshooting guide).
YouTube videos keep buffering in Firefox
Lower the video quality as a quick test
In the YouTube player, select Settings > Quality, then choose one or more steps below the current resolution. If buffering stops, the selected quality may be too demanding for the connection at that moment. YouTube adjusts quality based on factors including connection speed, player size, the original upload and browser or device support; not every quality option is available for every video (YouTube’s quality settings guide).

Compare a speed test with the recommendation for the quality you are trying to watch. Other devices sharing the connection can reduce the bandwidth available to Firefox, and speed-test results do not guarantee uninterrupted playback (YouTube system requirements and supported devices).
Compare Wi-Fi with another connection
If performance changes from one moment to another, restart your internet connection and try another available network if practical. When Wi-Fi seems to be the weak point, compare it with a wired Ethernet connection. YouTube notes that a hardwired connection may help, but Ethernet will not fix a Firefox-only fault, a YouTube service issue or an underpowered device (YouTube troubleshooting steps).

YouTube is lagging in Firefox or dropping frames
Update Firefox and reduce system load
Install any available Firefox update, then close and reopen the browser. If the computer has been running for a long time, restart it. Close tabs and applications you do not need; heavy workloads can leave fewer resources for video playback. Mozilla recommends checking Firefox’s Task Manager or about:processes to find tabs or extensions using substantial resources (Mozilla’s Firefox performance fixes). YouTube also recommends updating the browser and restarting the computer as part of troubleshooting (YouTube video-error troubleshooting).
Use Troubleshoot Mode to test extensions and acceleration
Firefox Troubleshoot Mode temporarily disables add-ons, switches to the default theme and turns off hardware acceleration. It is a diagnostic test, not a permanent fix. To start it:

- Open the Firefox menu and select Help > Troubleshoot Mode….
- Select Restart, then choose Open when prompted.
- Play YouTube and compare the result with normal Firefox.
If playback improves, return to normal mode and disable extensions systematically, testing YouTube after each change. Start with extensions that affect video or page requests; YouTube specifically notes that extensions, including ad blockers, can affect playback. Troubleshoot Mode changes both extensions and acceleration, so improvement alone does not identify which one was responsible (Mozilla’s Troubleshoot Mode guidance; YouTube’s video-error guidance).
Test hardware acceleration only if needed
Hardware acceleration can reduce CPU and memory use in many cases, but some graphics-card and driver combinations have problems with it. If extension testing does not explain the lag, change the setting as a reversible test:

- In Firefox, open Settings > General > Performance.
- Uncheck Use recommended performance settings.
- Uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available.
- Restart Firefox and compare playback. Re-enable the setting if performance gets worse.
Mozilla also recommends checking for graphics-driver updates through the computer manufacturer or operating-system update path (Mozilla’s graphics-driver guidance; Mozilla’s Firefox performance fixes).

If other sites work normally, focus first on YouTube-specific playback conditions rather than changing the whole Firefox setup. Try another YouTube video, lower the quality, and test playback in Troubleshoot Mode. A single video may have fewer quality options because of its original upload or format support; an extension can also affect YouTube without making other sites noticeably slow (YouTube quality settings; YouTube video-error troubleshooting).

Clear YouTube data only after simpler tests
If the problem persists, clear YouTube’s site data and Firefox’s cached web content, then restart Firefox. YouTube recommends clearing browser cache and cookies for video errors, and Mozilla recommends clearing cookies and cached content for loading problems. This can sign you out of YouTube or remove saved site state, so be prepared to sign in again (Mozilla’s Firefox troubleshooting guide; YouTube’s video-error guide).
When to refresh Firefox
Consider Refresh Firefox only if the issue affects Firefox more broadly and survives the earlier tests. A refresh restores Firefox’s default settings and removes extensions and themes. Mozilla says it retains essentials including bookmarks, history, open tabs, passwords, cookies and form autofill, while resetting preferences (Mozilla’s Firefox troubleshooting and refresh information). A new Firefox profile can also help determine whether the issue is tied to the current profile; avoid a refresh as a first step because it removes customizations.
