Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf Windows feels slower after you cleared caches or temporary files, the timing alone does not show that cleanup caused the slowdown. Check what is actually slow and how much storage is free, then follow the troubleshooting path that matches the symptoms. Microsoft lists several possible causes, including limited storage, startup apps, outdated software, malware, too many open apps or tabs, and older hardware.
First, identify the slowdown and check storage
Note where the delay occurs: during startup, when opening one app, in File Explorer, while browsing online, or across Windows generally. That distinction helps narrow the next step; slow browsing in one browser, for example, is different from a PC that freezes throughout Windows.

- Open File Explorer > This PC to check free space on the Windows drive, usually C:.
- Or open Settings > System > Storage to see how space is used by category. The exact labels can differ between Windows versions.
- If space is low, review what is using it before deleting anything. Installed apps, temporary files, and personal files may call for different actions.
Microsoft notes that low drive space can coincide with slower performance or difficulty installing updates. Having plenty of free space does not rule out other causes. See Microsoft’s performance guidance and Storage Sense and storage settings.
If the Temp folder refills and Windows reports low disk space
There is a specific post-cleanup issue Microsoft documents: after using Cleanup recommendations, the Temp folder may quickly refill with Microsoft Store .appx files and cause a Low Disk Space error. This is a targeted case, not evidence that caches generally make Windows slow or a reason to keep clearing caches repeatedly.

- Run the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter using the troubleshooter path available for your Windows version.
- Press Windows key + R, enter
wsreset.exe, and press Enter to clear the Microsoft Store cache. - Run the Windows Update troubleshooter.
- Restart the PC and check whether the Temp-folder refill and low-space message return.
Microsoft’s steps for this symptom are described in its drive-space guidance.
Reduce startup and background workload
Too many programs launching automatically, or many apps and browser tabs left open, can contribute to sluggishness.

- Open Task Manager and select Startup apps. In some Windows versions, the tab may be called Startup.
- Disable only apps you do not need to launch when you sign in. Avoid disabling entries you do not recognize or need.
- Close programs and browser tabs you are not using, then restart Windows.
- After restart, check performance with only the apps you need open.
These are diagnostic steps, not a guarantee of a particular speed increase. Microsoft includes startup apps and open apps or tabs among possible performance factors in its Windows performance tips.

Outdated software and malware are among the possible contributors Microsoft identifies. An available update or a recommended scan does not, by itself, establish the cause of your slowdown.

Use system repair or recovery only when the symptoms fit
Windows features fail, errors appear, or the PC freezes
If Windows features are failing or the computer repeatedly freezes or becomes unresponsive, Microsoft’s DISM and System File Checker (SFC) instructions cover scanning for and repairing missing or damaged system files. Follow Microsoft’s commands and order rather than using third-party repair utilities: repair Windows system files with DISM and SFC.
The slowdown began after a Windows update
If the timing lines up with a recent Windows update and the problem persists, Microsoft’s recovery guidance explains when uninstalling that update may help. This is a more consequential step than checking startup apps or storage, so use it only when the symptoms fit and follow the version-specific instructions: Windows recovery options.

The PC is older and remains slow
Software troubleshooting may not make a significant difference if the device’s hardware no longer meets current needs. Microsoft lists upgrading the device as a possible longer-term option, but that is not a diagnosis for a slowdown that happens to follow cleanup.
Recommended Free Tools
Use Storage Sense carefully; move files only if storage is low
Storage Sense acts on the system drive, usually C:. With default settings, it runs when the device is low on disk space and cleans unnecessary temporary files. It does not manage Downloads or cloud content unless configured to do so. Review the choices before deletion, especially Downloads and previous Windows installation files, which may contain files you want to keep or affect recovery options. See Microsoft’s Storage Sense instructions.
If you confirm that personal files are taking up needed space, moving some to external storage is one option; it is not a general performance fix. It will not address a startup-app, malware, update, or system-file problem. Microsoft lists external storage among ways to free drive space in its Windows storage guidance.
Keep Windows 10 support status separate from the diagnosis
The troubleshooting guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11, but navigation and labels can vary by version. On October 14, 2025, Microsoft ended free Windows 10 software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes. That lifecycle change is important for people still using Windows 10, but it does not establish why a particular PC became slow. Check Microsoft’s performance guidance using the path closest to your Windows version.
