How to Fix Slow Wi-Fi From an ISP Router

Find out whether slow Wi-Fi comes from the ISP connection, gateway, device, or home coverage—and follow practical checks before buying more equipment.

A fast internet plan does not guarantee fast Wi-Fi in every room. First compare a wired connection with Wi-Fi, then compare Wi-Fi beside the ISP gateway with Wi-Fi where it feels slow. Those two checks help separate an ISP or modem problem from weak coverage, interference, or a device limitation—and show whether you need troubleshooting, an ISP call, or better in-home coverage.

1. Establish where and when the slowdown happens

Before changing settings, note whether the problem affects one device or every device, one room or the whole home, and whether it is constant or intermittent. Run a speed test under consistent conditions, using the same test service and roughly the same time period for each comparison. A single low result from a distant room cannot identify the cause by itself.

  • If only one device is slow, its Wi-Fi capability, settings, or connection may be the limiting factor.
  • If every device is slow throughout the home, check the wired service and gateway before focusing on wireless coverage.
  • If devices work well near the gateway but struggle in particular rooms, investigate placement, barriers, and signal coverage.

Provider speed, device capability, Wi-Fi band, distance, walls, and nearby wireless traffic can all affect results, according to Google Home and Nest Help.

2. Compare wired service with Wi-Fi

Connect a computer to the gateway by Ethernet, if you can, and run a speed test. Compare that result with a Wi-Fi test taken under similar conditions. If your setup has a separate modem and router, a temporary direct-to-modem test may help determine whether the router is involved. Follow your ISP’s instructions for this test: gateway configurations differ, and some equipment may need to be reconnected in a particular order.

What you find What it suggests Next step
Wired and Wi-Fi results are both slow The issue may be with the ISP service, modem, plan provisioning, or an upstream outage rather than Wi-Fi coverage. Check local service notices and ask the ISP to verify service and plan provisioning. A Wi-Fi coverage upgrade is unlikely to fix an upstream limit.
Wired is satisfactory, but Wi-Fi is slow beside the gateway The wireless connection, gateway settings, or the test device may be limiting performance. Test another capable device, then review placement and Wi-Fi conditions.
Wi-Fi is satisfactory beside the gateway but slow in the problem room Distance, walls, placement, or interference may be weakening coverage. Try repositioning the gateway and compare the available coverage options if the problem persists.

TP-Link recommends a direct-to-modem comparison to check whether slow speed persists upstream of its router; use that guidance as a diagnostic approach, not as an instruction to bypass ISP equipment without checking its requirements: TP-Link’s slow-internet troubleshooting guide.

3. Restart the equipment and check the cable

If the slowdown affects wired and wireless devices across the home, restart the equipment before changing Wi-Fi settings. For a separate modem and router, TP-Link’s sequence is to restart the modem first, wait two to three minutes for it to reconnect, and then restart the router. Gateway designs vary, so follow the ISP’s reboot instructions if the modem and router are combined or the provider specifies a different procedure.

TP-Link AC1200 WiFi Router Dual Band Wireless Internet Router (Archer A54) | 4 x 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet Ports, EasyMesh Compatible, Support Guest WiFi, Access Point Mode, IPv6 & Parental Controls
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
  1. Restart the modem, then wait for it to reconnect to the service.
  2. Restart the router after the modem is back online.
  3. Inspect the Ethernet cable linking a separate modem and router. If it looks damaged or a poor connection is plausible, test with a known-good cable.

TP-Link recommends Cat6 or better for the modem-to-router link, but that is its recommendation—not proof that every existing cable is the cause. Replacing a cable will not fix weak Wi-Fi signal or an ISP outage.

4. Improve the Wi-Fi connection before changing settings

First make a fair comparison: test close to the gateway with few obstacles, then repeat in the room where performance is poor. Use the same device if possible. A strong near-gateway result and a much weaker room result points toward a local wireless issue rather than a slow plan.

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

Reposition the gateway

Where cabling and ISP rules allow, place the gateway in a central, elevated, open location. Avoid hiding it in a cabinet or placing it behind large obstacles. A better position may improve more rooms without adding equipment. TP-Link’s router placement guidance discusses positioning for signal coverage.

Check band, distance, and interference

Compare the available Wi-Fi bands if your gateway and device support them. A device on 2.4 GHz may not reach the same speeds as one on 5 GHz, while the higher-frequency connection can be more affected by distance and walls. Nearby Wi-Fi networks and household electronics can also contribute to interference. The best result depends on the gateway, device, room, and surrounding wireless traffic; there is no single band or channel setting that is right for every home.

5. Change gateway settings carefully

Channel selection, channel width, QoS, parental controls, and firmware controls vary by ISP gateway make and model. Do not assume a menu path or setting from one router applies to yours. Use the ISP’s or device maker’s instructions for the exact model. TP-Link’s guide, for example, suggests channel and channel-width adjustments and temporarily disabling QoS or parental controls on supported TP-Link equipment; those are model-specific troubleshooting checks, not universal directions.

  • Change one setting at a time so you can tell whether it helped.
  • Record the original value before changing it, and restore it if performance does not improve.

6. Know when to call the ISP or add coverage

Contact the ISP when the wired connection is slow

If wired performance is also below what you expect from your plan, check for local service notices and ask the ISP to verify the connection and provisioning. Google’s troubleshooting guidance describes one possible result this way: “The Internet speed from your provider is currently slower than expected.” (Google Home and Nest Help.) A mesh system or access point cannot increase the bandwidth supplied by an underperforming ISP connection.

Consider extra coverage when only distant areas are poor

If performance is good near the gateway but consistently weak in certain rooms, first try repositioning the existing equipment. If that is not enough, a compatible access point or mesh system may help extend coverage. Check whether it works with the ISP gateway’s functions and whether a wired backhaul—an Ethernet connection between network points—is practical. Placement matters for mesh points too; see Google’s guidance on improving Nest Wifi and Google Wifi speed and performance. Choose coverage equipment for a diagnosed coverage gap, not as a remedy for slow wired service.
