How to Fix Slow or Unresponsive Performance on a Chromebook

Start with a restart and a lighter workload, then check ChromeOS updates, local storage, and Diagnostics. Learn how to distinguish a device problem from a slow tab or website—and when to contact an administrator or manufacturer.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with a restart, close unused tabs and apps, remove any recently added extension or app that coincides with the slowdown, and check for ChromeOS updates. Then inspect Storage management; if the problem persists, use Diagnostics to look for unusually high CPU use or a failed memory test. The right next step depends on whether the whole Chromebook is slow, one tab is misbehaving, or only a network-dependent page is affected—there is no single fix that works for every cause.

First identify what is actually slow

Before changing settings, note the scope of the problem. Is the entire Chromebook responding slowly, or does the trouble appear only in one tab or on one website? Does the device freeze or crash, or do tabs repeatedly reload? Is the affected page dependent on an internet connection? These distinctions help keep a website or connection problem from turning into an unnecessary device reset.

What you notice What to check first Why it matters
Many apps and pages respond slowly Restart, close unused apps and tabs, check storage, then inspect CPU and memory in Diagnostics. A device-wide slowdown can involve system resources or local storage, though these checks do not by themselves prove a hardware fault.
One tab freezes, crashes, or will not refresh Try a hard refresh with Ctrl + Shift + r. If other tabs work, focus on that page before changing system settings. A problem limited to one page is not evidence that the whole Chromebook is slow.
Tabs repeatedly reload Close unused tabs, open Task Manager with Shift + Esc, and consider disabling extensions you do not need. Google identifies low memory as one possible reason for repeated tab refreshes; the symptom alone does not establish the cause.
Only one website loads slowly or times out Check whether other sites work, then consider the page and internet connection. A connection timeout can mean the connection is slow or the page is busy.
Slow performance continues after basic checks Run appropriate Diagnostics tests, check the device’s update schedule, and contact the administrator or manufacturer as applicable. The next step depends on whether the device is managed, whether tests point to hardware trouble, and whether it still receives updates.

Make one change at a time and test the Chromebook afterward. If several changes are made together, it becomes harder to tell which one helped—or whether the slowdown had cleared on its own.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a useful comparison, note what was open when the slowdown started and whether the problem appears again after a restart. You do not need to run a formal benchmark: simply try the same task, page, or app that felt slow. If only a particular site triggers the problem, keep that distinction in mind as you work through the checks below.

Try the low-risk fixes first

Restart and reduce the current workload

  1. Save work in open documents and close apps and browser tabs you are not using.
  2. Restart the Chromebook.
  3. After it starts again, reopen only the apps and pages you need and check whether the original problem returns.

Closing tabs is particularly useful when pages are reloading or the device feels strained while many things are open. If the whole Chromebook still feels slow with a light workload, move on to updates, storage, and Diagnostics instead of repeatedly closing tabs without checking other causes.

Try to change only the workload, not several other settings at the same time. If performance improves with fewer tabs open, that tells you the workload may be part of the issue, but it does not prove a particular app or component is faulty. If nothing changes, continue to the next checks rather than reopening everything at once and losing track of the comparison.

Test a tab that is stuck

If one page is frozen but the rest of the Chromebook responds, try Ctrl + Shift + r to perform a hard refresh. This is a page-level check, not a general speed repair. If the same site remains slow while other websites work, investigate that page or the connection rather than resetting the whole Chromebook.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A hard refresh reloads the page; it will not resolve every site error, and unsaved information in the page may be lost. If the page remains stuck, note whether other sites and apps remain responsive. That observation is more useful for choosing a next step than repeating the refresh many times.

Review recently added apps and extensions

If the slowdown began after installing an app or browser extension, remove or disable that recent addition and test again. Google recommends uninstalling recently added apps or extensions when troubleshooting hardware and system problems. For extensions you rely on, start with ones you do not need rather than disabling everything at once; that makes it easier to spot whether a particular extension is related to the symptom.

For repeatedly refreshing tabs, use Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Review what is active and disable extensions that are not needed. Task Manager can help you inspect activity, but a high resource reading or a temporary improvement after closing something is not, on its own, a complete diagnosis.

After changing an extension or app, return to the same task that caused trouble. If the issue began immediately after an installation and stops when that addition is removed, that is a useful clue. If there is no change, avoid removing unrelated apps in bulk; keep the troubleshooting focused on the observed symptom.

Check for ChromeOS updates

An available operating-system update is a sensible check before more disruptive troubleshooting. Google Chromebook Help directs users to Settings → About ChromeOS, where you can select Check for updates. Keep the Chromebook connected to power while the update is being downloaded or installed to reduce the chance that the process is interrupted.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select About ChromeOS.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. If an update downloads and the Chromebook asks to restart, restart it to complete the update.
  5. After the update, test the same apps or pages that were slow before.

If the update check or installation fails, restart the Chromebook and try again using Wi‑Fi or Ethernet. A work- or school-managed device may have update controls set by its administrator. If you cannot update a managed Chromebook, contact that administrator instead of trying to bypass the device’s management.

Keep the device connected to a reliable network during the check; an update cannot be diagnosed as a performance fix if it did not complete. If the update finishes but the original symptom remains, record that result and continue with storage or Diagnostics. An update can be a useful maintenance step, but it is not a promise that every slowdown will disappear.

Look for low local storage

Low storage can interfere with tasks including loading webpages and using Android apps. ChromeOS Storage management separates usage into categories, which is more useful than deleting files at random. Open Settings → System preferences → Storage management and review the categories before deciding what to remove.

  • Downloads: Remove files you no longer need, or move files you want to keep to Google Drive.
  • Offline files: Check locally stored files and remove only items you no longer need available without a connection.
  • Browsing data: Clear browsing data if appropriate. Clearing data can affect saved browser information, so review the available choices before confirming.
  • Android storage: Identify Android apps or their locally stored data that you no longer need before removing anything.
  • Other users: Extra local accounts can use space. Remove an account only when its locally stored files are no longer needed.

Google also recommends clearing browsing data or download history and uninstalling unused apps as possible ways to free space. These are cleanup options, not guaranteed performance fixes. Preserve files you need, and avoid deleting an entire category simply because it appears in the storage breakdown.

Work through the categories rather than treating the storage screen as a list of items that must all be emptied. Downloads and offline files may contain the only local copy of something important; Android apps may keep data you still need; and another user’s files belong to that account holder. Move wanted files to Drive or another suitable location before removing the local copy, and remove an extra account only after confirming its local files are no longer needed.

If storage looks adequate or carefully removing unneeded items does not change the symptom, do not keep deleting files in pursuit of a guaranteed speed gain. Recheck the scope of the problem and continue to the diagnostic steps. Storage cleanup is most relevant when space is actually constrained; it is not a substitute for investigating a single slow website or a failed hardware test.

Use Diagnostics to investigate CPU and memory

ChromeOS Diagnostics provides information that can help narrow down a device-wide slowdown. Google Chromebook Help says Diagnostics is available on ChromeOS version 90 and later. You can find it in the launcher or open it through Settings → About ChromeOS → Diagnostics.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check CPU activity

Diagnostics displays CPU usage, temperature, and speed. Its CPU graph can help identify apps using CPU resources. If one app appears active while the Chromebook is slow, close that app and see whether responsiveness changes. Treat the graph as a clue about current activity, not a guarantee that the app is the underlying cause or that the CPU is defective.

Diagnostics also includes CPU stress tests. Running one can make ordinary use difficult while the test is in progress, so do not mistake the temporary impact of a running test for the original performance problem. Use tests when they are relevant to troubleshooting, and allow the Chromebook to complete them rather than trying to work normally at the same time.

Use the graph alongside your observations: compare the apps running with the task that feels slow, then see whether closing an app changes responsiveness. A momentary high reading does not establish a persistent problem, and the graph is not a diagnosis of a failing component. Avoid running a stress test simply to make the Chromebook faster; it is an investigation tool, and its temporary load can make normal use harder while it runs.

Check memory

The memory test measures system memory. A failed result may indicate faulty memory; it is a reason to contact the Chromebook manufacturer for help, not a self-contained diagnosis or a repair instruction. Save the test details so you can describe the result when you contact support. A passed test also does not rule out every possible cause of slow performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Diagnostics shows no clear issue, return to the symptom and scope you observed. One slow site still calls for a page or connection check; repeated tab reloads still make a lighter tab and extension workload worth trying. Do not infer a hardware failure solely because the Chromebook feels slow.

When contacting support, provide the test result and the conditions in which the slowdown occurs: for example, whether it affects several apps, appears only with many tabs open, or is limited to one page. This gives the manufacturer a more specific starting point than “it is slow.” Diagnostics narrows the possibilities; it does not replace the manufacturer’s assessment.

Separate website trouble from Chromebook trouble

When only one page is affected, compare it with other websites. If other pages load normally, the affected site may be busy or having a problem of its own. If several network-dependent pages are slow or time out, the connection may be slow. Google’s explanation of connection timeouts includes both a slow internet connection and a page that is busy, so a timeout does not uniquely identify either cause.

  • Other sites work: Try refreshing the affected page and check again later. Avoid resetting the Chromebook based on one site’s behavior alone.
  • Several sites time out: Check the connection and retry when it is working normally. If available, use Wi‑Fi or Ethernet for an operating-system update that has failed over the current connection.
  • The entire device is unresponsive: Focus on restart, workload, storage, updates, and Diagnostics rather than treating the issue as a single-site error.

These checks help locate where the problem may sit; they cannot establish that a website, network, or device is at fault without further evidence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A useful distinction is whether the Chromebook itself responds while a page waits. If menus and other apps work but one page spins or times out, keep the investigation at the page or connection level. If local apps and the system are also sluggish, broaden the checks to workload, storage, and Diagnostics. A timeout alone cannot tell you whether the connection is slow or the page is busy.

Know when to contact an administrator or manufacturer

Contact the Chromebook manufacturer if slow or unresponsive performance continues after the reversible checks, or if Diagnostics reports a failed memory test or other results that point toward hardware trouble. Share the symptoms, what you tried, and any saved test details. Google recommends manufacturer support for problems that continue after troubleshooting.

For a Chromebook supplied or managed by a school or workplace, contact the administrator when you cannot install updates or when management settings limit what you can change. The administrator may control update availability and device configuration. Do not attempt to work around those controls.

Repeatedly resetting the Chromebook is not a substitute for finding the cause. A reset or recovery may remove local data, and there is no guarantee it will improve speed. If support recommends a recovery, first make sure important local files are backed up whenever possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the escalation point based on what is blocked or what the evidence suggests. An administrator is the right contact for managed-device settings or updates the user cannot install. The manufacturer is the contact for persistent symptoms and results that may indicate hardware trouble. If the issue is limited to one online service while other sites work, resetting the Chromebook is unlikely to be the most informative first move.

Check the device’s support and update schedule

An older Chromebook may have reached its device-specific update end date, but age alone does not establish whether updates are still available. To check the schedule, open Settings → About ChromeOS → Additional details and find the device’s update information. Use the schedule for the specific model rather than assuming all Chromebooks share the same final update date.

Google’s policy states that Chromebooks receive 10 years of automatic updates, with qualifications for some devices released before 2021 that use extended updates. Google notes that some such devices may have feature or service limitations. The relevant end date and update status therefore depend on the individual device; check its schedule before deciding what a lack of updates means for troubleshooting.

The schedule is also a separate question from whether the Chromebook is physically healthy or powerful enough for a particular workload. Check the specific device’s listed date and status, then consider what the user needs it to do. Do not conclude that a device needs replacing solely because it is old, or assume an update is unavailable just from its age.

Keep recovery as a last resort

Recovery is not a routine speed tip. Google warns that Chromebook recovery permanently erases the local hard drive, so back up important local files before proceeding whenever possible. Recovery instructions may use a USB flash drive, but Google cautions that some drives may not work well. No particular drive model or capacity is established here; follow the current recovery instructions for the device and check compatibility rather than guessing.

Consider recovery only after less disruptive checks and with a clear reason to do it, such as following manufacturer or administrator guidance. If you cannot back up important local files or are unsure which device-specific recovery instructions apply, stop and ask the manufacturer or administrator before continuing.

Recovery is different from the reversible checks earlier in this guide: it is a destructive process, not an ordinary cache-cleaning step. Confirm that files stored locally are backed up before starting, and follow the instructions for the exact Chromebook. A USB flash drive may be required to create recovery media, but compatibility can vary, so do not assume any particular model or capacity will work. Recovery may be appropriate when directed by support, but no speed improvement is guaranteed.

A practical order for troubleshooting

  1. Identify whether the whole Chromebook, one tab, or network-dependent pages are affected.
  2. Restart, close unused apps and tabs, and test again.
  3. If the issue began after an app or extension was added, remove or disable that addition and retest.
  4. Check for updates at Settings → About ChromeOS → Check for updates; use power and a working network connection.
  5. Inspect Settings → System preferences → Storage management and remove only local data or apps you no longer need.
  6. For a persistent device-wide issue, open Diagnostics and inspect CPU activity or run the memory test where appropriate.
  7. Contact the administrator for managed-device update or control issues, or the manufacturer for continuing problems and failed hardware-related tests.
  8. Check the device-specific update schedule. Treat recovery as a last resort, and back up local files before it.

Retest the symptom after each meaningful step, using the same app, page, or task where possible. That keeps the process orderly and helps distinguish a local device issue from a tab, site, connection, or management limitation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I try first if my Chromebook is slow?

Save your work, close unused apps and tabs, and restart. Then test the task that felt slow. If it continues, check for ChromeOS updates and review Storage management before moving to Diagnostics.

Why does one Chromebook tab keep reloading?

Google identifies low memory as one possible reason for repeated tab refreshes. Close unused tabs, open Task Manager with Shift + Esc, and consider disabling extensions you do not need. The symptom alone does not prove the cause.

Does a slow website mean my Chromebook is slow?

Not necessarily. If other sites and apps work, the page may be busy or having its own issue. A connection timeout can also mean the internet connection is slow, so compare other pages before changing device settings.

What does a failed Chromebook memory test mean?

A failed Diagnostics memory test may indicate faulty memory, but it is not a complete diagnosis. Save the test details and contact the Chromebook manufacturer for help.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will Chromebook recovery make it faster?

There is no guarantee that recovery will improve performance. Google warns that recovery permanently erases the Chromebook’s local hard drive, so back up important local files first and treat recovery as a last resort.

How do I know whether my older Chromebook still receives updates?

Check the device-specific information at Settings → About ChromeOS → Additional details. Google’s policy states that Chromebooks receive 10 years of automatic updates, with qualifications for some pre-2021 devices on extended updates; the listed schedule for your device is what matters.

The Bottom Line

Start with reversible checks: restart, reduce the workload, review recent apps or extensions, check updates, and free only storage you no longer need. Use Diagnostics when the whole device remains slow, and distinguish that from a single slow page or network timeout. Contact an administrator for managed-device restrictions and the manufacturer for persistent symptoms or failed tests. Recovery erases local files, so back them up first and use recovery only as a last resort.
