Then check the connection and competing network use before changing settings. These downloads can take longer because of connection speed, network settings, or update size; no single setting guarantees a faster update.
First, identify the download and the problem
The right fix depends on which app or device is downloading. A game update on an Xbox console is not the same process as an Xbox app download on a PC, a Microsoft Store download, or a Windows Update. In particular, Windows Update cache or troubleshooting steps should not be applied automatically to a console or an Xbox app game.

Also distinguish a download that is progressing slowly from one that has stopped or failed with an error. Microsoft says update download time primarily depends on internet connection speed, network settings, and update size. A large update can therefore take a while even when the connection is working normally. Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ explains those factors.

Check the connection and competing network use
Confirm the device is online and stable
Check that the device is connected to the intended Wi-Fi network or Ethernet and that the connection is stable. If other devices are streaming, downloading, or uploading heavily, pause those activities temporarily and see whether the game update changes. This is a reversible way to check whether available network capacity is part of the slowdown, rather than assuming the update needs a new setting or equipment.

Microsoft’s Windows connection guidance recommends checking Wi-Fi or Ethernet connectivity. If a Windows PC is slow only over Wi-Fi and both the PC and network support a wired connection, test Ethernet and compare. The test can indicate whether Wi-Fi contributes; it cannot fix a large update, a remote service issue, or every other cause.
Allow for update size and time
Compare the update’s displayed progress over time rather than judging it from a brief pause. Connection speed, network conditions, and the update’s size all affect how long it takes. Avoid repeatedly cancelling and restarting a download unless the app or device reports a failure: doing so does not address those underlying factors.

Windows PC: troubleshoot according to the download source
For Windows Update problems on Windows 11
- Open the Get Help app and run the Windows Update troubleshooter. Microsoft identifies this as the starting point for Windows 11 Windows Update problems; follow the diagnosis and recommended actions it provides. See Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance.
- Check that the PC has a stable internet connection. Microsoft advises verifying the connection and reconnecting to Wi-Fi or Ethernet if needed. Its connection troubleshooting guidance covers basic checks.
- If Windows Update reports an error rather than merely downloading slowly, use Microsoft’s error-specific troubleshooting steps. Do not treat clearing the Windows Update cache as a general fix for a game download in the Xbox app or on an Xbox console.
For Xbox app or Microsoft Store game downloads
First confirm that the Xbox app or Microsoft Store is the actual source of the download, then check the connection and competing network activity. Windows’ Delivery Optimization documentation covers Windows Updates, Store apps, and other Microsoft products, but that does not establish that every Xbox game download is slowed by Delivery Optimization.
On Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Delivery Optimization to review its Activity Monitor and settings. The Activity Monitor shows download sources and speeds. Microsoft says Delivery Optimization bandwidth limits apply to automatic update downloads; they do not apply when you manually initiate Windows Update or download a Store app. Changing those limits therefore may not affect a manually started Store game download. Xbox console: use basic connection checks, not Windows instructions
On an Xbox console, check that the console is connected to the network and that other devices or downloads are not using most of the available bandwidth. If practical, compare the connection with a wired Ethernet test. For exact console menu labels, error codes, or device-specific steps, consult current Xbox Support; the specific menu sequence can vary, and Windows troubleshooting instructions do not apply to the console.

The Delivery Optimization documentation covers Windows 10 and Windows 11, but Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s support notice. That support-status date is separate from whether a particular download setting exists on a device. The Windows 11 Get Help starting point described above is specifically for Windows 11.
