If Selenium types into the wrong place, cannot click a control, or says an element is not interactable, first identify which state is wrong. “Focus” may mean keyboard focus in the current document, Selenium’s selected frame or window, or whether the element is visible and ready for interaction. Each calls for a different fix; there is no single focus command that resolves them all.
Identify the failure before changing focus
Read the exception and identify the affected command. Selenium’s troubleshooting guide distinguishes failures such as intercepted clicks, stale element references, and elements that are not interactable. Those messages point to different conditions—not necessarily a generic focus defect.

- Element not interactable: The element may exist in the DOM but be hidden, unsuitable for keyboard input, or otherwise not ready for the requested interaction.
- Element click intercepted: Another element would receive the click, perhaps because of an overlay, popup, modal, or animation.
- Stale element reference: The page or DOM changed after Selenium found the element, so the saved reference no longer identifies a current element.
- No such element: The locator may be wrong, the element may not have appeared yet, or Selenium may be searching in the wrong frame or window.
Do not treat a report that clicks or typing work only while the browser window is visibly focused as proof of a universal Selenium bug. Determine whether the target, interaction state, or browsing context is actually wrong.

Confirm that your locator selects the intended element—not a hidden duplicate or a nearby control—and that the selected element is appropriate for the command. Selenium documents sendKeys for text fields and other keyboard-interactable elements. A node being present in the DOM alone does not make it a valid typing target. See Element interactions.
#1 Best Overall
Selenium’s element interactions attempt to scroll an element into view and check whether it is interactable. If typing or clicking still fails, inspect visibility and the page state rather than assuming Selenium needs a general-purpose focus operation.
Wait for the intended UI state
A control can be present before it is ready: the page may still be loading, an animation may be moving an overlay, or a modal may be covering the target. Use an explicit wait for the condition your next action requires, such as visibility or clickability, instead of relying on an arbitrary pause. Selenium specifically recommends explicit waits among the remedies for intercepted clicks in its troubleshooting guidance.
For a click interception, check which element is in front of the target and whether the obstruction should disappear or be dismissed. Waiting for the relevant UI transition is generally more reliable than immediately issuing a JavaScript click, which can bypass the interaction behavior your test is meant to exercise.

Switch to the correct frame or window
When the element is inside an iframe
An iframe has its own browsing context. Switch into it before locating or interacting with its contents; switch back to the main document when finished. Selenium’s frames documentation describes the required context change.
When a link opens a new tab or window
WebDriver does not automatically change its selected window handle just because a new tab appears or the operating system shows that tab in the foreground. Selenium puts it plainly: “Clicking a link which opens in a new window will focus the new window or tab on screen, but WebDriver will not know which window the Operating System considers active.” Get the new window handle and explicitly switch to it before searching for elements there. See Working with windows and tabs.
Refresh stale element references after page changes
A WebElement refers to an element in a particular DOM state. After navigation, refresh, or a dynamic page update, that reference may be stale. Locate the element again after the change rather than continuing to use an old reference. Also confirm you are in the right frame or window before re-locating it. Selenium explains this failure in its error guidance.

Inspect keyboard focus when it helps
In Python, driver.switch_to.active_element returns the currently focused element in the current document; Selenium documents that it returns BODY when nothing has focus. Use it as a diagnostic to see where keyboard input would go. It does not switch frames or windows, select the intended field, or make a hidden element interactable. See the Python SwitchTo API.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

JavaScript can scroll an element into view as a targeted workaround when you have confirmed it is out of view or obstructed. Then verify the page state and retry the intended interaction. Selenium already attempts to scroll elements into view during its normal element interactions, so JavaScript scrolling should not be the first response to every failed click.
A JavaScript assignment to an input’s value is not a general substitute for sendKeys: it can skip the user-like interaction your test is intended to validate. First correct the locator, wait for readiness, and switch to the proper browsing context.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Selenium have a universal focus command that fixes these failures?
No. Keyboard focus, element interactability, and the selected frame or window are separate states and need different remedies.
Why does Selenium say a click was intercepted?
Another element would receive the click. Check for an overlay, popup, modal, or animation and wait for the intended UI state.
Recommended Free Tools
Why can a newly opened tab look active but still not work with Selenium?
The operating system’s visible foreground tab and WebDriver’s selected window handle are separate. Switch WebDriver to the new handle.
