A blank WordPress page is only a symptom. To prove that Apache or PHP really crashed, reproduce the request and match its UTC timestamp with Apache’s Segmentation fault (11) or exit signal SIGSEGV entry and a signal-11 entry from PHP-FPM. If those native-crash records are absent, investigate an ordinary PHP fatal error, timeout, proxy failure, or application error instead.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
Once the crash is confirmed, work from least destructive to most diagnostic: enable WordPress logging on a staging copy, isolate plugins and themes, compare PHP versions and extensions, then collect a core dump and gdb backtrace if the fault remains reproducible. Only after you have evidence should you consider moving from mod_php to PHP-FPM.

Confirm that the blank page is a native crash
Do not treat every empty response as a segmentation fault. A native crash terminates a process outside normal PHP exception handling, so the browser may receive no useful error page and WordPress may write no final stack trace.
- Record the request. Note the exact URL, query string, HTTP method, logged-in role, and the time in UTC. Reproduce it once rather than refreshing repeatedly.
- Check Apache’s configured ErrorLog. Find an entry at the same time containing wording equivalent to
child pid ... exit signal Segmentation fault (11). Apache’s debugging guide gives this characteristic form:child pid 2027 exit signal Segmentation fault (11), possible coredump in /tmp. - Check PHP-FPM evidence. Inspect the pool error log and the service journal for
SIGSEGV,signal 11, or an equivalent worker-termination message at that timestamp. - Compare the clocks. Apache, PHP-FPM, and WordPress logs must be interpreted with their timezone and clock settings in mind. A nearby but unrelated signal is not proof that the page caused the crash.
If Apache and PHP-FPM contain no matching native signal, follow the normal WordPress critical-error process instead: inspect PHP error messages, request timeouts, upstream status codes, and reverse-proxy logs. A memory-limit exhaustion error is a different failure from a SIGSEGV and needs a different remedy.

Turn on WordPress diagnostics without exposing errors
Use a staging clone whenever possible. WordPress states that its debug tools are intended for local testing and staging, not live sites. Add these constants before reproducing the request:
define( 'WP_DEBUG', true );
define( 'WP_DEBUG_LOG', true );
define( 'WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY', false );
With WP_DEBUG_LOG enabled and WP_DEBUG set to true, WordPress writes to wp-content/debug.log by default (or to a path you explicitly configure). Keeping WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY false prevents notices, warnings, and traces from being sent to visitors while you test.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAfter one controlled reproduction, inspect debug.log around the recorded time. Search for the template, shortcode, block, plugin name, PHP warning, or the last successful hook or callback. A native crash can occur before PHP emits a final message, so an abrupt end to the log does not clear a plugin, extension, or PHP runtime.
Remove or disable these settings after the investigation on any public site, and protect archived logs because they can contain paths, user data, or secrets.
Isolate WordPress code before changing the server
Isolation is reversible and often identifies the trigger without destroying the environment needed for a backtrace.
Disable plugins in batches
On staging, disable every nonessential plugin and request the same URL. If the crash stops, re-enable plugins in groups until one group reproduces it, then test those plugins individually. Record the exact plugin version, the PHP version, and the request that fails. A plugin that appears in the last PHP log line is a lead, not proof: native extensions used by that plugin may be the component that actually crashes.

Switch to a bundled default theme
Activate a default WordPress theme temporarily and repeat the request. If the page now works, compare the failing template, custom callbacks, shortcodes, blocks, and query code in the original theme. Keep the test copy unchanged until you have captured the evidence you need.
Compare routes and request types
Request the home page, a simple page, wp-admin, and the failing URL. A crash limited to one route points toward code executed only by that template, query, shortcode, block, or plugin integration. If every PHP request fails, prioritize the PHP runtime, an extension, or a shared library instead of page-specific WordPress code.
Inventory the runtime
Before upgrading or removing anything, record:
- PHP version and SAPI: PHP-FPM, CGI, or Apache module.
- Loaded extensions and their package or build versions.
- Apache version, MPM, loaded modules, and the relevant virtual-host configuration.
- OPcache settings, operating-system architecture, and distribution package versions.
- The request URL, method, user role, and synchronized timestamps from every log.
Then compare the failing site with a supported PHP version and a minimal, compatible extension set on staging. WordPress identifies plugin or theme conflicts and incompatible PHP versions as common causes of critical errors; changing one variable at a time preserves a useful comparison.
Use logs to identify where the failure occurs
Apache ErrorLog
The path is whatever your active ErrorLog directive specifies, which can differ by virtual host and distribution. Look for the child-process exit message, its process ID, and any possible core-dump path. Save a small, sanitized window around the event rather than an entire log file.

PHP-FPM pool log and service journal
PHP-FPM may write pool errors to a configured file, while service-level failures appear in the operating system journal. Check the pool configuration and the service unit name used by your distribution; package names differ by PHP version. Search for worker exits, signal 11, restarts, and messages about extensions or shared libraries.
WordPress debug.log
Use the UTC request time and the URL to correlate application messages with the native logs. Keep in mind that a segmentation fault can leave no PHP backtrace at all. The absence of a last PHP statement is therefore an evidence gap, not a diagnosis.

Capture a core dump when the crash is reproducible
A core file lets a maintainer inspect the native call stack at the instant the process died. Capture it on staging or during a controlled maintenance window.
- Choose a controlled directory. Configure Apache’s
CoreDumpDirectoryto a writable location reserved for diagnostic files. Apache changes directory there before dumping core. - Permit core files. Raise the shell core-size limit for the process that starts Apache, for example with
ulimit -c unlimited. Linux also applies operating-system core-dump policies, so verify those limits and the service manager’s restrictions. - Reproduce once. Use the same URL and request data that generated the signal. Note the new timestamp and the core-file path reported by Apache or the operating system.
- Preserve matching binaries. Keep the exact PHP binary, extension packages, Apache modules, and configuration used when the core was created. A backtrace made with different libraries can point to the wrong source line.
- Restrict access. A core can contain request parameters, cookies, credentials, and other process memory. Copy it only to a controlled diagnostic location, limit permissions, and delete it after the incident workflow.
Generate a gdb backtrace
PHP’s crash-debugging procedure requires an unstripped PHP binary for a useful backtrace. Run gdb against the matching executable and core, then collect a full stack:

(gdb) bt full
Save whether symbols were available, the complete bt full output, and the command used. If the stack stops in an extension or shared library, do not assume that frame is the original cause; compare the extension build, PHP ABI, and loaded-library versions before changing it.
Build an evidence bundle
- Core-file path, ownership, permissions, and creation time.
php -voutput, SAPI, loaded-extension list, and package build identifiers.- Apache version, MPM, loaded modules, and the applicable virtual-host configuration.
- Sanitized Apache, PHP-FPM, service-journal, and WordPress excerpts with synchronized timestamps.
- The exact reproducing URL, HTTP method, query parameters, and user role.
- The gdb
bt fullresult and a note stating whether debug symbols were present.
Monitor the stack during repeated tests
For an intermittent fault, PHP-FPM monitoring and Apache crash monitoring can record worker restarts, request duration, pool saturation, and the time of each signal. Keep monitoring data alongside the request timestamps rather than relying on a browser refresh history. A monitor cannot identify the crashing line by itself, but it can show whether the problem affects one worker, an entire pool, or only a particular traffic pattern. Restrict dashboards and alerts to authorized staff because URLs and query strings may contain personal or secret data.
Decide whether the PHP architecture is part of the problem
Apache’s PHP guidance prefers proxy_fcgi with PHP-FPM for Apache 2.4 and newer. It improves separation and diagnosis and allows a threaded event or worker MPM. The older mod_php path is non-thread-safe and tied to the prefork MPM.
| Aspect | mod_php with prefork | PHP-FPM through proxy_fcgi |
|---|---|---|
| Process relationship | PHP runs inside Apache child processes. | Apache forwards PHP requests to separate PHP-FPM workers. |
| Crash isolation | A PHP crash terminates the Apache child handling it. | The failing PHP-FPM worker can be distinguished from Apache’s request process. |
| Diagnostics | Apache and PHP failures are more closely coupled in one process. | Separate Apache, pool, and service logs make correlation clearer. |
| MPM support | Requires the non-thread-safe prefork MPM. | Works with threaded event or worker MPMs when extensions are compatible. |
| Memory behavior | Apache children carry the embedded PHP runtime. | PHP workers can be recycled independently; recycling may be needed when workers leak memory. |
| Migration risk | Existing module and ini assumptions remain in place. | Every extension and SAPI-specific setting must be verified on staging before rollout. |
Moving to PHP-FPM is not an automatic segmentation-fault fix. First reproduce under the current stack and capture evidence. Then run the identical WordPress copy under PHP-FPM on staging, with the same PHP version, extensions, and relevant ini settings. Compare crash frequency and all logs. Keep the original stack available as a rollback path.

Apply the smallest evidence-based fix
When a plugin or theme is implicated
Confirm the result by re-enabling only the suspected component and reproducing the same request. Update it to a release that supports your PHP version, remove the conflicting callback or feature, or replace it after preserving a rollback copy. If the crash persists with the component disabled, return to runtime and extension testing instead of continuing to change WordPress code.
When PHP or an extension is implicated
Test a supported PHP release and a minimal extension set on staging. Change one extension or package at a time, especially those named in the backtrace, and repeat the exact request. Update, disable, or rebuild the implicated component only after confirming that the change removes the crash without introducing compatibility errors.
When the stack is inconclusive
Keep the core, symbols, package versions, and synchronized logs together and give them to the host or component maintainer. A blank response without a native signal is not enough for a segmentation-fault diagnosis, and a stripped binary cannot provide the same level of detail as a symbolized build.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When only one WordPress page crashes
A route-specific failure is valuable evidence. Compare the failing page with a new, nearly empty page using the same template. Remove blocks or shortcodes from a staging copy one at a time, then restore them in reverse order. Check whether a particular query parameter, logged-in role, language, or media item is required to trigger the crash. If the page fails only for authenticated users, reproduce with a test account and record its capabilities without including passwords or session cookies in a bug report.
Also test the same content through the editor preview, the front-end URL, and a command-line or HTTP client request. Different paths can invoke different hooks and caching layers. A cached response may hide a crash, while a cache purge may suddenly make it reproducible; record cache state with each attempt.
Plan a safe mod_php-to-PHP-FPM migration
- Clone the production site and database to staging, protecting personal data.
- Inventory PHP extensions, ini settings, Apache modules, MPM, scheduled jobs, and any code that checks the SAPI.
- Install PHP-FPM and the matching extension versions; configure the pool and Apache
proxy_fcgiroute on staging. - Run the failing URL and representative administrative, front-end, upload, cron, and API requests while collecting Apache and PHP-FPM logs.
- Compare response behavior, authentication, file permissions, OPcache behavior, and crash frequency with the original stack.
- Prepare a rollback by preserving the previous virtual-host configuration and service definitions.
- Deploy during a maintenance window, verify the health checks, and keep the old configuration ready until the new stack has passed normal traffic tests.
Keep extension compatibility as the gate for migration. A threaded MPM and separate PHP workers are useful architectural properties, but they cannot compensate for an extension or library that still crashes under the tested PHP build.
Best Value
Common mistakes that make diagnosis harder
- Increasing
memory_limitand stopping there. Memory exhaustion and SIGSEGV are different conditions; a limit change does not explain a native signal. - Enabling visible debugging on production. It can disclose paths, queries, credentials, and stack details to visitors. Log privately with display disabled.
- Changing PHP, Apache, plugins, and the theme at once. You lose the comparison that identifies the responsible layer.
- Deleting logs after each failed attempt. Preserve synchronized excerpts and request times so a maintainer can correlate processes.
- Assuming the last PHP message is the culprit. Native crashes can occur in an extension or library after the last userland callback.
- Publishing a core file. Treat it as sensitive process memory and restrict retention.
- Migrating directly on production. Test PHP-FPM, extension compatibility, and rollback procedures on staging first.
- Testing with mismatched binaries. A core generated by one PHP package and opened with another can produce misleading symbols and frames.
- Ignoring service-manager limits. A shell’s
ulimitdoes not override every systemd, container, or operating-system core-dump policy. - Repeating uncontrolled requests. Multiple simultaneous crashes can rotate logs, overwrite evidence, or create several unrelated cores.
A practical decision path
- If the browser is blank, reproduce once and record UTC time and request details.
- If Apache shows no matching signal-11 entry and PHP-FPM shows no SIGSEGV, investigate ordinary PHP, timeout, proxy, or WordPress errors.
- If both native logs correlate, enable private WordPress logging on staging and isolate plugins, then the theme.
- If isolation does not identify the trigger, compare PHP versions and extensions while preserving the runtime inventory.
- If the fault remains reproducible, configure core dumping, obtain a symbolized gdb backtrace, and secure the evidence bundle.
- Use the backtrace to target a plugin, extension, library, or PHP build. Test the smallest change first.
- Evaluate PHP-FPM migration only as a tested architecture change, not as a substitute for identifying the crashing component.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does one WordPress page crash Apache while the rest of the site works?
That page may invoke a unique template, shortcode, block, database query, media transformation, or plugin integration. Compare it with a simple page, remove components on staging one at a time, and correlate the exact request with Apache and PHP-FPM signal-11 logs.
Where are the Apache and PHP-FPM logs?
Apache writes to the path configured by the active virtual host’s ErrorLog. PHP-FPM commonly has a pool error log plus messages in the operating-system service journal. Check the pool and service configuration because paths and service names vary by distribution and PHP version.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can increasing PHP’s memory limit fix a segmentation fault?
Usually not. Memory-limit exhaustion is a managed PHP error, while SIGSEGV is a native process crash. Confirm the signal in Apache or PHP-FPM logs before changing limits.
How do I get a useful gdb backtrace?
Create a core dump from the reproducible crash, retain the exact PHP executable and extension libraries, and use an unstripped or symbolized PHP binary with gdb /path/to/php /path/to/core, followed by bt full. Preserve the output and symbol status.
Is PHP-FPM safer than mod_php for WordPress?
PHP-FPM separates PHP workers from Apache and supports threaded event or worker MPMs when extensions are compatible. It improves isolation and diagnosis, but migration alone does not repair a crashing extension or library; test it on staging with a rollback plan.
What should I send my host or plugin maintainer?
Provide sanitized, synchronized Apache, PHP-FPM, journal, and WordPress log excerpts; the exact URL and request details; PHP and Apache versions; SAPI, MPM, extensions, package builds, configuration; the core-file metadata; and the complete symbolized bt full output. Never publish credentials or an unrestricted core file.
The Bottom Line
Prove the signal before changing WordPress. Correlate Apache and PHP-FPM timestamps, enable private WordPress logging, isolate plugins and themes, and preserve the exact runtime inventory. If the crash remains reproducible, a controlled core dump and symbolized gdb backtrace provide far better evidence than repeated browser refreshes. Fix the component named by that evidence, and treat a mod_php-to-PHP-FPM move as a staged, reversible architecture change.
