How to Fix Screen Tearing Without VSync: 6 Methods to Try

Enable compatible VRR first and keep the game’s frame rate within the display’s supported range. If that is not an option, try a compatible vendor sync feature and treat frame caps and display checks as conditional tools—not guaranteed fixes.

The best way to reduce or eliminate screen tearing without enabling VSync is to use a compatible variable refresh rate (VRR) display and GPU, with the game’s frame rate kept within the display’s VRR range. If VRR is unavailable or does not help, try a compatible vendor feature such as AMD Enhanced Sync or NVIDIA Fast Sync; a frame cap by itself is not a guaranteed fix on a fixed-refresh display.

Why screen tearing happens

Tearing can occur when frames are presented asynchronously to the monitor’s refresh cycle. NVIDIA describes tearing as a possible result when VSync is disabled and the frame rate exceeds the display’s refresh rate. The exact behavior depends on the display, GPU, game, and presentation mode. NVIDIA’s Adaptive VSync explanation describes this relationship.

Six methods to try

1. Enable VRR on the monitor and GPU

VRR features include AMD FreeSync, NVIDIA G-SYNC, and compatible Adaptive-Sync implementations. When the display and GPU support the same feature and it is enabled on both, the display can adjust its refresh timing to the game’s frame rate, reducing or eliminating tearing within the supported operating range. AMD says FreeSync synchronizes display refresh with frame rate to reduce or eliminate tearing and stuttering; NVIDIA also describes tear-free VRR use under supported conditions. AMD FreeSync support and NVIDIA’s system latency guide explain their respective systems.

  1. Check the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD) for Adaptive-Sync, FreeSync, or G-SYNC and turn on the supported option.
  2. Enable the matching VRR feature in your GPU software. Labels and availability vary by GPU, driver, and display.
  3. Use a supported connection and display mode, then test the game. Keep its frame rate inside the monitor’s VRR range.

2. Keep the frame rate inside the VRR range

If VRR works but the game’s frame rate exceeds the display’s maximum VRR refresh, a limiter may help keep it within range. NVIDIA recommends setting Max Frame Rate slightly below maximum refresh for this purpose, and AMD documents frame-rate control as a way to stay below a FreeSync display’s maximum range. There is no single offset that is right for every display and limiter. A cap alone does not guarantee tear-free output on a fixed-refresh display. See NVIDIA Max Frame Rate support and AMD Radeon settings support.

  1. Find the monitor’s supported VRR range in its specifications or manual.
  2. Use one limiter—such as the game’s limiter or the GPU driver’s limiter—to keep FPS below the range’s upper limit.
  3. Test for tearing and stutter. Adjust the cap if needed; avoid assuming a particular FPS offset will work for every setup.

3. Try AMD Enhanced Sync on a compatible Radeon system

AMD Enhanced Sync is a driver feature intended to minimize tearing while reducing latency and stutter compared with traditional V-Sync. It is not available on every system, and its effect depends on hardware, driver, and game support. Check whether the option appears in your AMD software and test it in the game. AMD’s Enhanced Sync page describes the feature.

4. Try NVIDIA Fast Sync on a compatible NVIDIA system

Fast Sync is an NVIDIA Control Panel presentation option that NVIDIA describes as improving latency without introducing tearing. It is vendor-specific, and the setting may not be exposed or work as expected with every GPU, driver, or game. Check the available settings in your NVIDIA Control Panel and test the result. See NVIDIA’s Control Panel settings reference.

5. Verify the intended refresh mode and VRR setting

Check that the operating system is using the refresh rate you expect and that VRR is enabled in the monitor OSD. This is a setup verification, not a guaranteed standalone cure. If the expected mode is unavailable, check the display’s specifications, connection, GPU driver, and selected resolution before testing again.

  1. Open your operating system’s display settings and confirm the selected refresh rate.
  2. Open the monitor OSD and confirm its refresh or Adaptive-Sync status if shown.
  3. Check the monitor and GPU documentation for supported resolutions, refresh rates, connections, and VRR ranges.

6. Address unstable frame delivery when you also see stutter

If frame rate fluctuates or motion stutters, reduce graphics load or try the game’s supported frame-pacing or latency features. This may make delivery more consistent, but reducing graphics settings alone is not a guaranteed tearing fix. NVIDIA’s system latency guide discusses latency features such as Reflex; availability depends on the game and hardware.

  1. Check whether the game’s frame rate is fluctuating during the affected scene.
  2. Try lowering demanding graphics settings or using a supported in-game frame pacing or latency option.
  3. Retest with the same scene and determine whether stutter, tearing, or both have changed.

How the options compare

Option Compatibility What it can do Important limitation
VRR Requires a compatible display, GPU, connection, and enabled settings Can reduce or eliminate tearing within the supported VRR range Performance outside the range can differ; check the exact display and setup
Frame-rate cap Usually available in a game or driver, but implementation varies Can help keep FPS inside a VRR range Not a guaranteed tear eliminator by itself on a fixed-refresh display
AMD Enhanced Sync Compatible Radeon hardware and driver AMD positions it as a way to minimize tearing while limiting latency and stutter Vendor-specific; verify that the option is available and test it
NVIDIA Fast Sync Compatible NVIDIA hardware, driver, and game NVIDIA describes it as improving latency without introducing tearing Vendor-specific; behavior and availability can vary
Refresh and VRR checks Any setup with accessible display settings and OSD Confirms whether the intended mode and VRR setting are active Diagnostic checks, not a standalone guaranteed cure
Reduce frame-time instability Depends on game settings and supported features May help when stutter accompanies the problem Does not establish a guaranteed tearing fix

What if none of these methods works?

Check whether the display actually supports VRR at the resolution and refresh rate you are using, and whether your GPU and connection support that mode. If your current display lacks suitable VRR, a compatible variable refresh rate gaming monitor may be relevant; verify its supported GPU, connection, and VRR range before buying. No monitor purchase is necessary if your current setup already supports the feature.

Some NVIDIA guidance recommends driver VSync together with Reflex or Ultra Low Latency Mode for a low-tearing G-SYNC setup. That option does not meet a strict requirement to keep VSync disabled everywhere, but it may be worth considering if by “without VSync” you mean avoiding its perceived latency rather than disabling the setting itself. NVIDIA notes a latency tradeoff. Read NVIDIA’s guide and check the settings for your system.

FAQ

Can a frame cap by itself stop screen tearing?

Not reliably. The evidence here supports a frame cap as a way to stay inside a VRR display’s maximum range, not as a universal tear eliminator on fixed-refresh displays.

Does FreeSync or G-SYNC always eliminate tearing?

No. VRR can reduce or eliminate tearing when the display, GPU, connection, settings, and frame rate are compatible. Check the display’s supported VRR range and confirm the feature is enabled.

Can I use AMD Enhanced Sync or NVIDIA Fast Sync?

These are vendor-specific options. Enhanced Sync is for compatible Radeon setups, while Fast Sync is an NVIDIA Control Panel option. Check your driver software and hardware documentation to see whether the setting is available, then test it in your game.

Should I enable VSync in the driver if I want to avoid VSync?

Not if you mean that VSync must remain disabled everywhere. NVIDIA does describe driver VSync as part of a low-tearing G-SYNC configuration for users prioritizing low latency, but that is a different configuration and may involve a latency tradeoff.
