If your laptop fan is still loud or the computer still overheats after cleaning, check more than the visible vent: confirm airflow and placement, see whether a demanding app is driving fan speed, and run the manufacturer’s supported diagnostic. A clean exterior does not prove the internal cooling path is clear or that the fan is working properly. Grinding or shrieking, shutdowns, a failed diagnostic, or persistent overheating are reasons to stop DIY troubleshooting and contact the manufacturer or a qualified technician.
First, distinguish normal fan activity from a possible fault
Fan speed usually rises when the processor or graphics hardware is working hard. Gaming, video editing, file conversion, and other demanding tasks can make a fan audible; the key clue is whether the noise tracks that workload or continues during light use. A loud fan at startup can also be normal on some systems, but its expected behavior varies by model. ASUS and HP describe model-dependent fan behavior.

- Noise mainly during demanding work: Check CPU/GPU activity and ventilation before assuming the fan is defective.
- Loud at idle or during light use: Check for an unnecessary high-load process, blocked airflow, or a cooling issue.
- Grinding or shrieking: This can indicate fan-bearing abrasion; it is not ordinary airflow noise. LG recommends technician inspection for this type of sound.
Also note whether the case is unusually hot, performance has slowed, the laptop restarts or shuts down, or the problem began immediately after cleaning. These details help support staff distinguish a workload-related fan ramp from a persistent cooling fault.

- Shut down the laptop before cleaning or repositioning it. Disconnect power before cleaning, following your manufacturer’s instructions.
- Set it on a hard, level surface. A bed, blanket, or lap can obstruct openings or restrict airflow beneath the chassis.
- Locate both intake and exhaust openings for your exact model. Do not assume the exhaust is on the sides: some ASUS laptops exhaust near the display hinge. Consult the model manual or support page and keep every opening clear. ASUS ventilation guidance explains this model variation.
- Consider the room temperature and the laptop’s stated operating limits. ASUS gives a general ambient operating range of 5°C to 35°C (41°F to 95°F) in its guidance; your model’s manual is the authority for its applicable limits.
A laptop stand or cooling pad can elevate the chassis and improve clearance, but it is only an airflow aid. It cannot fix a failed fan or an obstructed internal heatsink.

Do not repeat cleaning in a way that can damage the fan
More force is not necessarily safer. ASUS warns that excessive compressed-air pressure can damage fan blades. Its guidance is to power down and disconnect the laptop, use canned air at a distance, and avoid inverting the can while spraying. Do not use a high-pressure air compressor or aggressively spin the blades.
If dust is lodged inside the fan or heatsink and reaching it requires opening the laptop, check the model-specific service instructions and warranty terms before proceeding. Internal access and safe disassembly differ between models; use manufacturer service or a qualified repairer if you are unsure.

Check whether software or settings are driving the fan
Open your operating system’s process monitor—Task Manager on Windows—and look for an application using unusually high CPU resources. Close only a process you recognize and do not need; avoid ending unfamiliar system tasks. LG describes sorting Task Manager processes by CPU use as one way to identify a possible overload.

Some laptops also provide model-specific performance, thermal, or fan modes. Use only controls offered for your exact model: options vary, and Dell says thermal controls are available only on select systems. Dell, ASUS, MSI, and LG each describe workload or supported-setting checks in their troubleshooting guidance: Dell, ASUS, MSI, and LG.

If you update BIOS/firmware, drivers, or the operating system, get the update and instructions from the laptop maker’s support page for your exact model. MSI and HP include updates in their guidance, but an update cannot repair a mechanical defect.
Run the manufacturer’s diagnostic, if your model supports it
Built-in diagnostics can identify some fan or hardware faults. Tool names and menus depend on model, and a passing test is useful evidence—not proof that every overheating issue is resolved.

- Dell: Dell documents SupportAssist/ePSA diagnostics. Its procedure uses the one-time boot menu to select Diagnostics; if a test fails, record the error and validation codes and contact support. See Dell’s overheating and diagnostics instructions.
- ASUS: On supported devices, MyASUS System Diagnosis includes a Fan check. If it detects a problem, ASUS recommends service. See ASUS’s fan troubleshooting steps.
- MSI: MSI describes a Hardware Diagnosis scan in MSI Center. Contact MSI if the issue remains. See MSI’s notebook overheating guidance.
Follow the maker’s instructions for your device rather than installing a vendor utility that may not support your model.
Know when to stop troubleshooting and get service
Contact the laptop manufacturer or a qualified technician if the fan grinds or shrieks, visibly wobbles, fails a diagnostic, or if the laptop continues overheating after you have checked airflow and workload. Repeated thermal shutdowns also warrant prompt service. Save any diagnostic error or validation code and describe when the fan becomes loud, what tasks are running, and whether the laptop has shut down.

Internal fan or heatsink work depends on the laptop’s design, the fault, and its service or warranty path. Do not assume that replacing thermal paste is the right fix: the symptom alone does not establish that cause. Dell advises technical support for persistent problems, and ASUS recommends service when its diagnostics detect an issue. See Dell and ASUS.
