Start with the symptom: if DeX will not open, check how the display is connected and launch DeX from Quick Settings; if the monitor mirrors the tablet, switch the connected display to Extend; if a keyboard or mouse fails, follow the checks for its connection type. The exact settings and available DeX features depend on your Galaxy Tab model and software version.
Check your Galaxy Tab model and DeX setup
Samsung supports tablet DeX connections to a TV or smart monitor wirelessly or through a compatible DeX cable, HDMI-to-USB Type-C cable, or HDMI adapter. Compatibility depends on the tablet and display; do not assume that any USB-C adapter will work. Samsung’s tablet setup guide also says touchscreen displays are not compatible with DeX functionality. Samsung’s current workspace guidance lists Standalone DeX on specified models, including Tab S4, Tab S6/S7/S8/S9/S10/S11 series, Tab A9+, and Tab A11+. Starting Standalone DeX directly from the Home screen requires Android 16 with One UI 8.0 or later on supported devices. If a menu path below does not match your tablet, search Settings for “Samsung DeX.” Menu labels can vary by model and software version.

If DeX will not start on the TV or monitor
Wireless display
- On the tablet, open Settings > Connected devices > Samsung DeX > Connect wirelessly.
- Select the TV or smart monitor, then approve the connection on both the display and tablet if prompted.
- Keep the tablet near the display to reduce wireless lag or stuttering.
Wired display
- Connect the USB-C end of a compatible DeX or HDMI cable to the tablet and the HDMI end to the TV or monitor. A compatible HDMI adapter is another option.
- Unlock the tablet and accept the DeX prompt. If it does not appear, open Quick Settings and tap DeX.
- If the tablet is connected but showing its ordinary screen, use the DeX notification or Quick Settings DeX control to switch into DeX.

Why is my Galaxy Tab mirroring instead of opening DeX?
Samsung says some Galaxy phones and tablets after updating to One UI 8 (Android 16) may default to mirroring when connected to an external monitor. Try these checks in order:

- Restart the tablet.
- Check for and install an available software update.
- Verify the tablet and display are connected through a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI cable or adapter.
- Open Quick Settings and enable DeX.
- Open Settings > Connected devices > Samsung DeX > Connected display and choose Extend, if that option is available.
- If the problem continues, try another TV or monitor to help determine whether the display is involved.
Samsung’s steps are in External display mirrors Galaxy screen instead of launching DeX. Check that the cable or adapter is compatible with both your particular tablet and display.

Why won’t my keyboard or mouse work in DeX?
Use the checklist that matches how the accessory connects. Samsung recommends testing a failing peripheral on another device; that helps distinguish an accessory fault from a DeX or tablet issue.

Bluetooth keyboard or mouse
- Inspect the keys or buttons and clean them if needed. Make sure the accessory is powered on and sufficiently charged, and that Bluetooth is enabled on the tablet.
- Restart the keyboard or mouse.
- If it is already paired, unpair it from the tablet and pair it again.
- Restart DeX and install available tablet software updates.
- If it still does not work, check the keyboard language and mouse or trackpad settings in DeX, then test the accessory on another device. If it fails there too, contact its manufacturer.

Wired USB keyboard or mouse
- Check that the cable is firmly connected and undamaged. Reseat any USB adapter.
- If using a DeX Pad or Station, try a different USB port.
- Test the keyboard or mouse on another device. If it works there, restart DeX and check for software updates.
- Review the keyboard language and mouse or trackpad settings in DeX.

Wireless keyboard or mouse with a USB receiver
- Make sure the accessory is switched on and its batteries are installed correctly and charged.
- Unplug the wireless receiver, then reconnect it. If it is plugged into a DeX Pad or Station, try another port.
- Test the keyboard or mouse on another device.
- If it works elsewhere, restart DeX, check for updates, and review the keyboard language and pointer settings.

Samsung’s tablet DeX settings include connected-display options such as font size, resolution, rotation, and screen timeout, as well as preferences for keyboard, mouse, touchpad, and sound output. Look in the Samsung DeX settings on the tablet for the option relevant to your issue; names and paths can vary between models and software versions. Samsung’s tablet DeX guide describes these controls.
