If the Indian rupee sign (₹) appears in your browser but disappears, becomes a box, or looks like another currency symbol in a Loki screenshot, check the character, the font actually used to draw it, and the browser/runtime Loki captures with—in that order. The title alone does not identify the cause: it depends on the page’s text, fonts, and screenshot environment.
1. Confirm the character is the Indian rupee sign
The intended sign is Unicode U+20B9. Check the actual DOM text or source value rather than relying on how it looks in an editor. A useful HTML character reference is ₹, which should render as ₹ when the chosen font supports it. The Unicode Consortium’s Currency Symbols chart identifies the character. Check that the text has not been dropped, replaced, or set to a visually similar currency character.

Character identity and glyph appearance are separate issues: correct U+20B9 text can still be drawn incorrectly by a font. Unicode notes that “The shapes of the reference glyphs used in these code charts are not prescriptive. Considerable variation is to be expected in actual fonts.”

In browser developer tools, select the affected text and inspect its computed font-family and the rendered-font information, if the browser provides it. A CSS declaration only shows the requested stack; the browser may fall back to a different font for a character missing from the first choice. Verify that the font ultimately used has a correct U+20B9 glyph.

A font can show the wrong currency glyph rather than an empty box. Historical reports illustrate why checking the selected font matters: a 2015 Fedora report concerned a PT Sans TrueType build displaying a ruble glyph at U+20B9, and a 2020 Google Fonts issue also described PT Sans rendering in particular contexts. These reports do not establish a current defect in your font version.
3. Check web-font loading and fallback
- Confirm the screenshot environment can fetch the same font file as your normal browser. Look for failed font requests, blocked resources, authentication or cross-origin problems.
- If the font is subsetted, check that its declared character range includes U+20B9 and that the relevant subset is loaded.
- Make sure the capture waits until the font is ready. A screenshot taken before the web font loads may capture a fallback font instead.
- Test a fallback stack only if an available font in that stack contains a suitable rupee glyph. Adding more font names does not help if none of the installed or loaded fonts supports it.
These are checks, not an assumption that your current font is defective.

4. Compare the browser with Loki’s capture environment
Loki’s documentation recommends Chrome in Docker for screenshots and also lists local Chrome, the iOS simulator, and the Android emulator as supported platforms. See the Loki documentation for platform guidance. Your project’s selected platform is not known from the symptom alone.

Record the browser and version, operating system or container image, configured Loki platform, available system fonts, and whether the web font finished loading. A desktop browser may have fonts that are absent from a Docker image or simulator, or the environments may load different web-font files.

5. Reduce the issue to a small reproduction
- Create a small Storybook component containing only
₹ 123and capture it in the working browser and Loki. - Verify the code point in the DOM. Keep the visible test short so that the affected glyph is easy to inspect.
- Change one variable at a time: test a known suitable font, wait for font loading, or run the capture on another configured Loki platform.
- Compare the resulting images. If the problem follows the text, investigate the character; if it follows the font, investigate glyph coverage or the font file; if it follows the runtime, investigate its installed fonts and loading conditions.
This controlled reproduction is a diagnostic method, not a test of your site performed here.
6. Save evidence before changing configuration
Keep the faulty screenshot and note the DOM text and code point, computed and rendered font, browser and version, operating system or container image and version, and Loki platform. That information helps distinguish character, font, and environment problems. In a 2018 Chromium-discuss thread about a similar cross-browser rendering report, a responder asked for the font, character encoding, platform and platform version, and a screenshot.
