Next, identify which distribution you use and confirm the game’s actual install path. The Vortex extension documentation says Steam is normally discovered automatically, while other versions may require selecting the install path manually. It also says Dragonwilds does not support symlinks, so the Vortex staging folder and game installation must be on the same drive.

Steam and Game Pass paths are not interchangeable
UE4SS documentation provides Steam-side installation guidance. In a Mod Menu support exchange, the Game Pass installation is described as using a WinGDK location rather than Win64, with a Game Pass-compatible UE4SS build recommended. Treat that as guidance for the reported setup, not a rule for every build: verify the current mod instructions and runtime log for your installation.

Check how the mod is installed and enabled
Different mod types use different file locations and loading methods. Vortex documents separate handling for pak mods, UE4SS scripts and DLLs, Blueprint LogicMods, and root-folder mods. Do not assume that instructions for one type apply to another; follow the specific mod’s installation notes.
For a UE4SS script mod
For the cited Mod Menu example, the support response points to the mod folder, Scripts/main.lua, and an enabled.txt marker. Check that the expected files are present in the expected folder and that the mod is enabled. Other UE4SS mods may require different files or setup.
Then inspect UE4SS.log for evidence that the runtime scanned for and started the expected mod. If the mod is not detected, recheck the install path and required files. If it is detected but fails during startup, preserve the log and exact error for the mod author.

For a Vortex-managed mod
Confirm the mod is enabled and deployed. The Vortex extension says deployment is required after changing load order, so changing the order alone may not apply the new arrangement. Vortex also documents specific conditions for automating placement of some config, save, and character files, including C-drive requirements; check its documentation if those files are involved.

For a pak mod
Close Dragonwilds before changing pak files. RSDW Dev Kit documentation says the running game holds file locks. Its toolkit provides controls to enable or disable paks, adjust load order, refresh, and reload them.
Choose a management route that matches the mod
Vortex and RSDW Dev Kit document different capabilities; neither source establishes that one is universally better. Choose based on the mod type, supported game build, install path, and how the tool applies load-order changes.

Isolate an update-related or conflicting mod
If the game stopped loading mods after an update, compare each mod’s stated compatibility with the installed game version. To identify a conflict, temporarily disable the mods, launch the game, then restore them in small batches and launch again after each batch. This can narrow down which mod or combination is involved; community reports of post-update breakage are anecdotal and do not identify a universal culprit.
When the mod still will not load
- Menu does not appear: Verify the mod is enabled, its required files are present, and the installed UE4SS build and location match the mod’s current instructions.
- Vortex changes have no effect: Confirm the mod is deployed, especially after a load-order change, and check that staging and game folders are on the same drive.
- Pak changes do not take effect: Exit the game before editing or managing pak files, then use the relevant tool’s refresh or reload controls if applicable.
- Startup fails after adding a mod: Disable mods and reintroduce them in small batches. For UE4SS, save
UE4SS.logand the exact error; the available guidance does not establish one log-based procedure covering every pak, UE4SS, and root-folder mod.
For tool-specific loading failures, consult the mod’s current instructions or support discussion. Jagex’s official troubleshooting category and installation and technical requirements page cover general game and client issues, but the official material cited here does not provide a specific fix for third-party mods failing to load.
