Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix ReShade by first identifying whether it is failing to inject, crashing the game, or loading without the expected effects. Then check that ReShade targets the game’s actual executable and rendering API. For older games, the API may need a wrapper—especially Direct3D 8, which the ReShade FAQ says to route through d3d8to9 and configure as Direct3D 9. Make one change at a time and keep a way to undo it.
Identify what is going wrong
The symptom narrows down the likely cause:
- ReShade does not appear at all: check the selected game executable and rendering API first.
- The game crashes before gameplay or shows a black screen: test for a ReShade version or overlay conflict, then investigate any wrapper or API change.
- The ReShade overlay appears, but effects are missing: check the selected preset and the shader files it requires.
These problems have different causes, so avoid changing the renderer, wrappers, overlays, and preset all at once.

Check the executable and rendering API
Run ReShade setup for the game’s actual executable, not just its launcher. Setup can try to identify the rendering API by examining executable modules and compatibility data, but the ReShade FAQ warns that automatic identification can be wrong. Its advice is to check which API the particular game uses and select it during setup: ReShade FAQ: Easy Troubleshooting.
- Find the executable that launches the game itself. If you are unsure, check the game’s documentation or compatibility information.
- Run ReShade setup and select that executable.
- Choose the API the game uses, accounting for any compatibility wrapper already installed.
- Launch the game and check whether the ReShade overlay appears before making another change.
The setup source includes pathways for Direct3D 9, DXGI/Direct3D 10–12, DirectDraw, OpenGL, and Vulkan. The right option depends on the game and on whether a wrapper changes the renderer the game exposes: ReShade setup source.

Use a compatibility path for older renderers
For games using old APIs, ReShade may need to target the renderer exposed by a wrapper rather than the game’s original API. Wrappers can also create visual, performance, or stability problems, so back up the game folder and verify each step separately. The approaches below come from the ReShade FAQ; they are compatibility routes, not guaranteed fixes.
Direct3D 8: convert to Direct3D 9
The FAQ directs Direct3D 8 users to d3d8to9. Place its d3d8.dll in the game folder beside the game executable, then select Direct3D 9 in ReShade setup. Do not select Direct3D 8 in ReShade.
DirectX 1–7, DirectDraw, or Glide: use a wrapper first
The FAQ describes DXGL and dgVoodoo2 as possible wrapper routes for very old games. DXGL exposes OpenGL, so select OpenGL in ReShade setup. dgVoodoo2 exposes a Direct3D 10-or-newer interface, so select the corresponding Direct3D 10+ option; the FAQ identifies dgVoodoo2 as the option compatible with Glide.
| Wrapper | Renderer to select in ReShade | Use noted in the FAQ |
|---|---|---|
| DXGL | OpenGL | Legacy DirectX or DirectDraw compatibility route |
| dgVoodoo2 | Direct3D 10+ | Legacy DirectX or DirectDraw route; the FAQ also identifies it as compatible with Glide |
Wrapper behavior varies by game. Check the wrapper’s current instructions, and first confirm that the game launches without ReShade or wrapper changes. Add one component at a time and test after each.

Troubleshoot startup crashes and black screens
Test for overlay or monitoring-software conflicts
Update ReShade, then temporarily disable third-party overlays or monitoring tools one at a time. The ReShade FAQ names MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner as examples of software that may conflict. Test the game after disabling each item so you can identify and restore anything unrelated to the problem: ReShade FAQ: startup crashes.
Try the DirectX 11 DLL rename only as a targeted test
For a DirectX 11 game, the FAQ suggests trying a rename from dxgi to d3d11. This is a compatibility test, not a universal black-screen fix. Preserve the original filename and reverse the change if it does not help.
Separate wrapper and ReShade changes
If the game needs a legacy wrapper, establish a clean baseline: launch it without ReShade or wrapper modifications, then add the wrapper and test, then install or configure ReShade and test again. The FAQ notes that multiple hooks and wrappers can interact; changing them in sequence makes it easier to find the cause and revert the relevant step.
If ReShade setup itself crashes
The FAQ’s note that ReShade versions from 4.4 used .NET Framework 4.8 is specific to those historical setup releases. It is not a general requirement for current setup versions. Check guidance for the version of ReShade you are installing rather than applying the old note automatically.

Fix missing effects when the overlay loads
If the overlay appears but the game looks unchanged, confirm that ReShade is using the preset you intend to use and that every shader file required by that preset is available. Older presets may not work with newer ReShade versions, according to the ReShade FAQ.
If setup failed while downloading the standard shader archive, the FAQ’s workaround is to download the official ReShade repository and place its Shaders and Textures folders in the ReShade folder under the game path. Check that the selected preset points to shader files that are actually present.
Remove ReShade without deleting a required DLL
The safest removal route described by the FAQ is to uninstall through the ReShade setup tool. Manual removal may involve ReShade configuration or preset INI files, the proxy DLL used for the game’s API—such as d3d9.dll, d3d11.dll, dxgi.dll, or opengl32.dll—and the reshade-shaders folder.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not delete a same-named DLL until you have confirmed it belongs to ReShade. A DLL beside a game executable may instead belong to the game or another component it needs. The ReShade setup source describes checking for an existing proxy DLL and warning when it is not ReShade’s, which is why blindly removing one can break the game.
