If Streamlabs Desktop will not save a recording, first check the destination folder and available disk space. Then test whether your account can write to that folder. For other problems, use the matching fix below: missing audio, poor performance, an error while recording alongside a stream, or a recording that will not stop.
Start with the symptom
Streamlabs Support notes that the Record feature can fail to produce a video file in the chosen folder. The cause may be storage, folder permissions, drivers, or a dependency—not necessarily the recording controls themselves. Follow the branch that matches what you see, and test after each change rather than changing several things at once.

- No file appears: check the recording path, free space, and write permissions.
- An error appears: note its exact wording; “Unable to write to” points first to the destination or storage.
- The recording works but stutters or overloads the computer: review encoder, resolution, and frame rate.
- Video records without desktop sound: check the mixer and selected audio device.
- The timer or spinner will not stop: check for Logi Tune as described below.
Fix a missing recording file or write error
Streamlabs Support’s Recording Issues in Streamlabs Desktop article, last updated April 25, 2025, recommends checking available disk space and confirming that the selected folder is writable by your account.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Read and record the exact error. This helps distinguish a write problem from an empty unexpected-error message.
- Check the configured destination. In Streamlabs Desktop, open Settings > Output and inspect the recording path. Confirm the folder exists and is the one you expect.
- Check free space on the destination drive. If it is nearly full, free space or choose a destination with room, then make a short test recording.
- Test a folder your account can write to. Change the path in Settings > Output to a known writable folder and try again. This is especially relevant to “An unexpected error occurred: Unable to write to.”
- Restart Streamlabs Desktop and try running it as administrator. If the issue is permission-related, this can help identify that; it is not a guaranteed fix for every cause.
- Update your graphics-card drivers. If the file still is not created, Streamlabs also lists graphics drivers as a troubleshooting step.
- Install or reinstall Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable 2017. Streamlabs lists this dependency for missing-file errors, including an empty unexpected-error message.
Make one change at a time and repeat the same short test. That makes it easier to tell which change affected the result.

If recording fails only while you are streaming
Recording and streaming together can expose encoder or quality-setting conflicts. For an empty unexpected-error message while doing both, Streamlabs recommends trying a recording encoder different from the stream encoder, or setting recording quality to Same as Stream. Change one setting, test, and restore it if the result gets worse.
In Settings > Output, review the recording encoder and quality alongside the stream settings. Separate encoders can increase system load, so also watch CPU and GPU use during a short recording. If the computer struggles, lower recording output resolution or use the same stream quality rather than assuming a higher-quality setting will work on every system.

Choose recording settings your computer can sustain
Streamlabs’ How to Record on Streamlabs Desktop guide, last updated October 2, 2025, describes the main trade-off: x264 encodes on the CPU, while NVENC offloads encoding to the GPU. Neither is universally better; available hardware and whether you are streaming at the same time matter.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Encoder and quality
- x264: uses CPU resources. If you see CPU load or dropped performance, test a GPU encoder if supported by your system.
- NVENC: uses GPU encoding. It can reduce CPU encoding work, but GPU load and available options depend on your hardware and Streamlabs Desktop version.
- Rate control: Streamlabs’ recording guide recommends CQP for supported recording workflows and CRF for x264. Treat these as starting points from the guide, then record and review a short sample on your own system.
- Recording alongside a stream: compare the load and result using a separate recording encoder versus Same as Stream.
Resolution and frame rate
Streamlabs recommends matching the base canvas to your monitor resolution for gameplay and choosing a high output resolution, then lowering output resolution if performance suffers. Its guide recommends 60 FPS for action-heavy footage; 30 FPS can be adequate for more static content. These are starting points, not a guarantee for every CPU, GPU, game, or simultaneous stream.

Make a short test at the settings you intend to use. Check both playback quality and system performance. Higher resolution and frame rate can mean larger files and more work for the computer; reduce one or both if the recording stutters or the system cannot keep up.
Fix missing desktop audio
If the video records but desktop sound does not, work through the input and routing checks in Streamlabs Support’s Desktop Audio Not Being Captured article, last updated April 25, 2025.

- Check the Streamlabs mixer. Confirm the desktop-audio source is present and not muted.
- Select the correct desktop audio device manually. Open Settings > Audio and select the playback device you actually use rather than relying on an unintended default.
- Close audio-management utilities that may conflict. If audio works after closing one, reopen programs individually to identify the conflict.
- Check Windows exclusive mode. In Windows sound settings for the playback device, review whether applications are allowed to take exclusive control; try disabling exclusive control if another app may be taking over.
- Check the Windows C++ redistributables. Streamlabs lists these among its troubleshooting steps for desktop audio capture.
- Use software audio routing only as a last resort. Streamlabs describes a routing workaround, but it adds setup and another possible failure point; first verify the source, device, and Windows settings.
If Streamlabs will not stop recording
Streamlabs Support’s issue page, Unable to Stop Recording on the Streamlabs Desktop App, dated August 23, 2026, identifies Logi Tune as a possible cause and reports uninstalling it as a workaround. If the recording timer resets or the stop control spins, close or uninstall Logi Tune and retry. The issue page is marked resolved with a workaround available; if the problem continues, contact Streamlabs Support.
If NVENC rescale output is missing
This option can depend on the app version and encoder. Streamlabs’ Desktop – Rescale Output not Working with NVENC Encoding article, dated May 25, 2026, describes Desktop 1.20.4: standard NVENC lacks the rescale option while NVENC (New) has it.

Check your installed Streamlabs Desktop version and the current support article before changing your workflow. Streamlabs lists x264 as a workaround, but it shifts encoding work to the CPU. It also mentions a preview build, which may be unstable; do not install a preview build unless you accept that risk. If rescaling is essential, weigh that trade-off against lowering the output resolution elsewhere or using an available encoder option.
Check the recording format and destination before a long session
Use Settings > Output to review the recording path, format, encoder, and rate control. Pick a format that fits your editing and playback needs, and verify the result by opening a short test file before relying on it for a long session. Keep the destination drive’s remaining capacity in mind: a successful start does not ensure enough room for a lengthy recording.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos rather than record your screen in Streamlabs, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
