Why is reCAPTCHA not working in Edge?
Google lists Chromium-based Microsoft Edge as a supported desktop browser when it is among the two most recent major browser versions. Keeping Edge current is therefore a sensible first check, but support does not guarantee that every website’s challenge will work.

The symptom can help focus troubleshooting. If the checkbox or challenge does not appear, start with browser support, JavaScript, cookies, and blockers. If a challenge appears but does not complete, test extensions, browsing mode, and the connection. If the problem happens on just one site, that site’s integration may be involved.

Google’s browser requirements for reCAPTCHA describe supported browsers. Google’s reCAPTCHA Help recommends updating the browser, checking JavaScript, and disabling plugins that may conflict when the checkbox widget is unavailable.

1. Update Edge and reload the challenge
Install any available Edge update, restart the browser if prompted, then revisit the page and try the challenge again. Google’s support window changes as major browser versions advance, so there is no fixed version number to use as a lasting cutoff. Microsoft also includes updating Edge in its general Edge troubleshooting guidance.
- Open Edge’s update controls and check for updates.
- Install any update offered; restart Edge if it asks you to.
- Reload the affected page and retry reCAPTCHA.
2. Check JavaScript and cookies for the site
Google specifically advises checking that JavaScript is enabled when the checkbox widget is missing. Microsoft’s guidance for browser security checks also identifies cookies and JavaScript as settings that can affect a check. Review Edge’s site permissions and privacy settings for the affected website, and allow the required functions there if they are blocked. Prefer a site-specific adjustment over weakening privacy protections for every site.

- Check that JavaScript and cookies are not blocked for the affected site.
- Reload the page and see whether the challenge appears or completes.
Exact labels and paths can vary by Edge release and platform. Microsoft’s security-check guidance concerns Microsoft account checks; it is useful context for browser settings, not proof that every Google reCAPTCHA failure has the same cause.

An extension that blocks scripts, ads, trackers, or other page content may conflict with a challenge. Google recommends disabling plugins that may conflict with reCAPTCHA, while Microsoft recommends testing Edge with extensions disabled as a general troubleshooting step.

- Temporarily turn off extensions or content blockers that affect the page.
- Reload the site and retry the challenge.
- If it works, turn extensions back on one at a time, testing after each, to identify whether one appears to cause the problem.
Do not assume a particular extension is responsible without testing. Microsoft’s discussion of blockers and security checks appears in its guidance for Microsoft account checks, not a universal diagnosis of reCAPTCHA.

If you are using InPrivate browsing, open the page in a regular Edge window and try again. Microsoft notes that private browsing can affect browser data used by its security checks. If you use a VPN or proxy, temporarily disconnect it as a diagnostic test; you can also try another network, such as a mobile connection. These are checks suggested in Microsoft’s account-security context, not evidence that reCAPTCHA itself has identified your IP address.

- Retry in a normal window rather than InPrivate.
- If you use a VPN or proxy, disconnect it temporarily and retry.
- If the failure continues, test another network. Shared office, school, hotel, or other network conditions may be relevant, but a failed challenge alone does not establish that a network or IP address was flagged.
5. Clear relevant browsing data, restart, or contact the site
Microsoft’s general Edge troubleshooting guidance includes clearing cache and browsing data and restarting the browser. Clear relevant data, restart Edge, then revisit the page. Because clearing cookies can sign you out of websites, consider whether you need to preserve active sign-ins before removing them.

Google’s reCAPTCHA Help says: “Please note that some sites may have incorrectly integrated with reCAPTCHA – in this case please contact the site’s webmaster.” Contact that site’s support or webmaster rather than repeatedly solving the challenge or changing unrelated device settings.
