What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
First check whether only one app has stopped responding or whether Windows itself is also freezing. If one app is affected, restart it and try its Repair option before resetting or reinstalling it. If several apps or the desktop hang, investigate background software and Windows stability instead. A random freeze does not identify a single cause.
Work out whether the freeze is app-specific
When the problem happens, check whether you can still use the desktop, taskbar, and other apps. A single frozen program points to a different first step than a desktop that stops responding or multiple apps that hang.

Note the app name, what you were doing, and whether the freeze started after an app or Windows update. Also note whether it happens with a particular file, device, or peripheral. These clues help narrow the investigation, but none proves a cause on its own.
If one application keeps freezing
Restart, then repair the app
- Close the app and reopen it. If Windows remains responsive, restart the PC as well.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the app’s menu, then choose Advanced options if that option is available.
- Select Repair and check whether the app still freezes.
Microsoft notes that Repair and Reset are not available for every app. See Microsoft’s app and program repair instructions for the current steps.

Reset only after considering local data
If Repair does not help and the app offers Reset, check the app publisher’s documentation first. Reset can clear app data or settings, depending on the app. Do not use it casually for software that may store unsaved or locally stored work.
Update or reinstall the affected program
If the issue remains limited to that program, check the publisher’s update guidance. You can also follow the publisher’s documented repair or reinstall process, or contact its support team. The right instructions depend on the app; a freeze alone does not establish a known app defect.
If several apps may be affected by background software
Use a clean boot to test for conflicts
A clean boot starts Windows with essential drivers and startup programs, helping determine whether nonessential services or startup software are interfering with an app or game. It is a diagnostic test, not a permanent operating mode. Some functionality may be temporarily reduced while Windows is in this state.

- In Windows, search for and open System Configuration (you can also run
msconfig). - Open the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, and then disable the remaining services.
- Open Task Manager’s Startup apps section and disable the enabled startup apps.
- Restart Windows and test the app or activity that usually triggers the freeze.
- When testing is finished, restore normal startup by reversing the changes you made.
Record what you disable so you can restore it. Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions for the full sequence and return-to-normal steps. Clean-boot changes may be restricted by work or school network policies; on a managed PC, follow your IT team’s instructions.
If Windows itself seems unstable
Consider updates and device drivers in context
Install relevant Windows updates. If the evidence points to a particular device or driver, use guidance from the device maker rather than generic driver-updater software. Hardware, drivers, and software can all be involved in serious Windows failures, but Microsoft’s guidance on unexpected restarts and stop-code errors does not diagnose an ordinary app hang. A frozen app by itself is not proof of a driver or hardware problem. See Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance for unexpected restarts and stop-code errors if those more serious symptoms are occurring.
Try DISM and System File Checker when corruption is plausible
Corrupted critical Windows files can contribute to unresponsiveness, but they are only one possible explanation. When system-file corruption is a reasonable concern, Microsoft recommends using DISM and System File Checker (SFC) to scan and repair Windows components. Run the commands in an elevated Command Prompt and follow Microsoft’s prescribed order, with DISM before SFC. These are repair attempts, not guaranteed fixes for every application freeze. Use Microsoft’s instructions for DISM and SFC rather than guessing at commands.

Escalate only when less disruptive steps fail
Recovery choices differ in how much they change or remove, so back up important files before proceeding. Microsoft advises starting with the least disruptive option suited to the problem; its recovery guidance says, “Try these options in order. Start with option 1 — it’s the least disruptive.”

- If the problem began after a Windows update: uninstalling that update is one of Microsoft’s recovery options.
- If earlier steps fail: consider a restore, Windows reinstall, or reset that matches the problem and your device. These actions can roll back changes or affect data, so review their specific effects before choosing.
- If reinstalling Windows: a manufacturer recovery image may include device-specific drivers and factory apps that generic installation media does not.
- If this is a work or school device: contact IT when troubleshooting does not resolve the issue, especially before recovery actions that may be governed by organizational policy.
Review Microsoft’s Windows recovery options to choose a route based on the timing and scope of the problem.
