If your phone speaker sounds quiet, muffled, or crackly, first work out whether the problem affects calls, all media, or just one app or recording. Then check volume and audio routing, remove any case or film that may block an opening, and clean only as your phone maker recommends. If distortion persists across different sources after these reversible checks, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider.
First, find out which sounds are affected
Test a local recording and play audio from two or three songs or videos in different apps. Then place a call and compare the earpiece with speakerphone. This helps separate a speaker problem from a bad file, an app issue, or a call connection problem.

- One recording or app sounds bad: Try another file and app. Google notes that a single distorted file may be the cause; a problem limited to one source does not establish that the phone speaker is faulty. Google Pixel audio troubleshooting
- Calls are affected, but media sounds normal: Check the volume while the call is active and investigate reception or connection conditions.
- Several media sources sound distorted: Continue with settings, obstruction, and cleaning checks. If the distortion remains across sources, Google advises contacting Pixel support. Google Pixel audio troubleshooting
Check volume and where the sound is going
Play the affected audio, or keep a call active, and raise the relevant volume using the phone’s controls. A phone can have separate levels for media, calls, and alerts, so changing one may not change another. On a call, use the in-call volume control.
Check whether Bluetooth headphones, a car system, or another connected device is receiving audio. Temporarily disconnect accessories or turn Bluetooth off, then test again. Apple also recommends checking Silent mode and Do Not Disturb when alerts are quiet; these settings may not explain low media volume. Remove anything covering the speaker or receiver
Temporarily remove the case and protective film, then test again. Inspect the speaker and receiver openings for visible debris, but do not insert anything into them or try to remove internal parts. Openings and vents vary by model. Samsung notes that an ill-fitting screen protector can obstruct the top receiver and that a case or film covering Galaxy air vents can contribute to low or crackly sound. Clean gently, following instructions for your phone
Do not use liquid, sharp tools, or forceful poking to clear an opening. Cleaning directions differ by manufacturer, so use the method specified for your model:

If only calls sound bad, check the connection
Test a call in another location and check signal strength. If Wi-Fi calling is enabled, try the call under different Wi-Fi conditions or compare with a cellular call. Apple says reception may be responsible when static or crackling continues during calls; Google also recommends checking connection strength and trying a different location. If local media plays clearly but calls do not, focus on the call connection rather than treating it as a general media-speaker fault. Apple speaker troubleshooting Google Pixel audio troubleshooting
For a wet phone, use model-specific drying guidance
Moisture or residue can affect sound. Samsung says water in a Galaxy speaker can cause audio problems and recommends drying the exterior and patting the earpiece, microphone, external speaker, and USB port with a clean, soft cloth. Salt residue can also accumulate as moisture dries. Follow the instructions for your own device rather than applying Galaxy-specific advice to another phone. Samsung Galaxy audio troubleshooting

A factory reset is an advanced step, not a first-line speaker fix. Samsung warns that a reset erases data and recommends backing up first. It also notes that a reset may not permanently resolve a problem caused by an app that still needs an update. Consider it only after simpler steps and manufacturer guidance.
