The timing alone does not prove the update caused it. Start with reversible display checks; use Safe Mode or update recovery only when the symptom points there, and reserve reset or reinstall options for last.
Start by identifying the problem and checking the output signal
If you can reach the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. The console detects the connected TV’s capabilities and selects the best available resolution automatically. This screen shows details such as the HDMI device’s resolution, VRR, and HDR, and lets you inspect or change the output. See Sony’s PS5 resolution and video-output guide.

- No picture or an incompatible display mode: go to Safe Mode’s video-output options.
- Flicker, unexpected HDR/VRR behavior, or trouble at a high refresh rate: test the video-output settings and HDMI chain.
- System features behaving incorrectly or performance drops: consider the relevant Safe Mode maintenance option.
- An update failed or will not complete: retry the standard update, then follow Sony’s Safe Mode or USB update guidance.
Fix a blank screen or display mode the TV cannot show
Safe Mode offers basic functions, including Change Video Output. Sony says its Change Resolution and Change HDCP Mode options can help troubleshoot blank screens.
- Turn the PS5 off.
- Press and hold the power button. Release it after the second beep.
- Connect the controller to the console with a USB cable, then press the PS button.
- Choose Change Video Output, then try Change Resolution or Change HDCP Mode as appropriate.
Follow the on-screen instructions and check whether the display returns. Sony’s Safe Mode guide lists the available options and entry procedure.

Troubleshoot flicker, resolution, HDR, VRR, or 120 Hz behavior
Try one output change at a time
For a flickering screen, Sony suggests setting Video Transfer Rate to -1 or -2 under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. These settings limit some higher-bandwidth output modes and may improve picture quality; they are not a guaranteed fix for every image or performance complaint. If the screen is stable, you can test the original setting again to compare.
If unexpected behavior occurs at 120 Hz, Sony advises turning 120 Hz Output off. VRR behavior depends on the TV; if a game behaves unexpectedly with VRR, try turning off Apply to Unsupported Games. Change one setting at a time so you can tell which change matters. Sony’s video-output guide covers these settings.

Check the TV and HDMI path
For problems with 4K at 120 Hz, check that the TV supports the mode and has current firmware, that you are using the correct HDMI port, and whether a receiver or other intermediary device is in the signal path. Confirm that the PS5 resolution and Video Transfer Rate settings suit the display setup. Sony recommends the included PS5 HDMI cable or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz. Try the supplied cable first if you have it; a higher-rated cable is relevant when the existing cable is unsuitable, damaged, or unavailable, not a universal performance remedy. Use Safe Mode for system-feature issues or performance drops
Sony explicitly recommends Clear System Software Cache when you are experiencing system-feature issues or performance drops. To reach Safe Mode, turn the console off, hold the power button until the second beep, connect the controller by USB, and press the PS button. Select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, then choose Clear System Software Cache. The exact Safe Mode menu may present these choices in sequence.

Rebuild Database is a separate option: it scans the drive and creates a new database of the console’s content. Sony lists it for system-feature issues or when a deleted game icon remains on Home. It is not described as a guaranteed graphics fix. Read Sony’s Safe Mode option descriptions before selecting an action.
Retry a failed or incomplete system-software update
Update from the home screen
If the PS5 reaches its menus, use Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings to check for and install the update. Sony also documents retrying an update from Safe Mode if the ordinary route does not work. Follow the current instructions on its system-software update page.

Use a USB drive only if the usual update route fails
Sony’s manual update procedure requires a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Create the folders PS5/UPDATE on the drive and save Sony’s official update file there with the filename PS5UPDATE.PUP. Then follow Sony’s on-page Safe Mode instructions to install it. Use the official file and exact folder and filename requirements; do not rename or substitute other files. The update page provides the current download and complete steps.
Understand data loss before choosing a reset or reinstall
Reset and reinstall options are not routine first steps for a picture or performance complaint. Their effects differ:

Back up data if possible before reinstalling. Sony explains the distinction between restoring defaults and erasing data in its default-settings guide; Safe Mode and reinstall details are on its Safe Mode page and update and reinstall page.
When to contact PlayStation Support
If the issue persists after the steps that match your symptom, use PlayStation Repairs as Sony’s escalation route. Have the error code, the affected game or screen, and the troubleshooting steps you tried ready when you contact support. A problem that appeared after an update does not by itself establish that the console needs hardware repair.
