Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse the symptom to choose the shortest safe fix: a crashing game needs installation, update, save-data, and reinstall checks; a download that will not start or is stuck needs queue, service, network, software, and storage checks; a padlock or missing purchase needs account, entitlement, and license checks. Record any complete error code before changing settings. Use Safe Mode only for the recovery option that matches the problem, and back up saved data before a reset or system-software reinstall.
Identify the failure before changing anything
Different PS5 problems can look alike. A game that closes during play is not automatically a license problem, and a padlock does not prove that the game files are damaged. Start by noting what happens, whether it affects one title or several, and whether an error code or message appears.

| What you see | Most relevant path | First checks |
|---|---|---|
| The game freezes, closes, or returns to the home screen | Crash or launch troubleshooting | Installation completion, game update, system software, and a fresh-game test without the existing save |
| A download never starts, pauses repeatedly, or remains in the queue | Download troubleshooting | Pause/resume, retry, PlayStation service status, internet test, software version, and free storage |
| An update fails with a code | Code-specific and general update troubleshooting | Record the code, test the connection, restart, update system software, then use the matching recovery steps |
| A padlock appears, a purchase is missing, or access is denied | Account and license troubleshooting | Buying account, transaction history, PlayStation Plus eligibility, Console Sharing and Offline Play, and license restoration |
If several explanations are plausible, prioritize the narrowest path: identify whether the failure is a crash, a queue problem, or an entitlement problem; determine whether one title or multiple titles are affected; note whether an existing save, shared purchase, update, or network connection is involved; and prefer reversible actions before anything that can remove data or settings.

Fix a PS5 game that keeps crashing or freezing
1. Confirm that installation is complete
Open the game’s download or installation status and make sure the full game has finished installing. A title can appear on the home screen while additional content is still being installed. Do not judge the result until the installation and any required update have completed.

2. Install the game update and current system software
Highlight the game on the home screen, press the Options button, and check for an update. Then open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings and install any available PS5 system-software update. Restart after updating and try the game again.
3. Test without the existing save
Start the game from the beginning without loading the affected save. If a new game works while the old save repeatedly crashes, the save may be corrupted. This test separates a game or console problem from a problem tied to one piece of saved data. Do not overwrite the original save while testing; preserve it until you have decided whether to restore a backup or contact support.
4. Restore licenses when access and crashing overlap
If the game is digital, a license check is also reasonable after confirming installation and updates. Restore licenses using Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses, then select the licenses to restore. You can also highlight the game on the home screen or in the game library, press Options, and choose Restore License. Sony’s official guidance says, “Please note, restoring licenses won’t affect your data.” Restoration is not a guaranteed crash fix, but it can help with game crashes and other entitlement-related symptoms.
5. Delete and reinstall the game
If the game still crashes after the preceding checks, delete the game and reinstall it from your game library or the disc. Re-downloading can replace damaged or incomplete game files. If the game is installed on USB extended storage and will not start, move it to the PS5’s internal storage and test it there before pursuing more disruptive recovery.
6. Restart, then use the appropriate Safe Mode recovery
For a title that will not start, restart the PS5, restore licenses, and retry the installation. If the problem persists, use Safe Mode as described below and select the cache or database option requested for the symptom. Clearing the system-software cache and rebuilding the database are maintenance operations; neither is the same as resetting the PS5.
7. Treat a reset as a last resort
Sony lists backing up game data and resetting the console among later crash-recovery options. A reset can remove user data, games, and settings, so it is not an early troubleshooting step. Back up saved data first and understand which reset option you are selecting. If the issue remains after a reset or appears across multiple games, contact PlayStation Support or PlayStation Repairs with the exact code and reproduction steps.
Fix a PS5 game download that will not start
Retry the item from Downloads/Uploads
- Open Downloads/Uploads from the PS5 control center or home screen.
- Highlight the game or update, choose Pause, wait briefly, and choose Resume.
- If it still will not start, cancel and delete the failed item from the queue.
- Open Game Library, find the title, and start the download again.
Deleting the queue item is not the same as deleting your account purchase. It removes the failed download task so the console can create a fresh one.
Check service status, software, and storage
- Check the PlayStation service-status page for an outage or maintenance affecting downloads, account services, or the store.
- Open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings and install a current system-software update if one is offered.
- Compare the game’s required free space with the storage available on the PS5. An apparently small update can require additional temporary space while it is installed.
- Verify that the purchase appears in Game Library. If it is hidden, use the library’s hidden-games control to reveal it before trying to download again.
Test the internet connection
For a download that is stuck, open Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection. If the test reports a connection problem, follow PlayStation’s network troubleshooting for that result. A queue retry cannot correct a failed network connection, and repeated retries can obscure the original error code.

Use Safe Mode only after the basic checks
If service status, storage, software, and the connection test do not explain the failure, Safe Mode offers cache and database maintenance. Use the exact option named by the current PlayStation instruction for the problem; the download guidance refers to “Clear Cache and Rebuild Database,” while the Safe Mode menu describes the operations separately. Neither operation guarantees a download fix, and neither should be confused with Reset PS5.
Fix a download or update that is stuck
For a stalled download
- Check PlayStation service status.
- Run Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection.
- Pause and resume the item in Downloads/Uploads.
- If it remains stuck, cancel and delete the item, then restart it from Game Library.
- Confirm current system software and enough free console storage.
- If the failure continues, use the relevant Safe Mode cache/database option.
For an update that fails
Test the internet connection, restart the PS5, and update the console system software. If the update still fails, delete and reinstall the affected game or application. The general update guidance also points to Safe Mode’s cache and database maintenance when ordinary steps do not resolve the problem.
When the error code determines the next step
| Error code | Sequence Sony specifies |
|---|---|
| CE-106487-6 | Update system software, restore licenses, delete the failed download and retry it, then rebuild the database if necessary. |
| CE-120706-6 | Restore licenses, restart the PS5, rebuild the database, and delete and reinstall the game if the update still fails. |
These sequences are examples of why the complete code matters. Do not substitute one code’s remedy for another, and do not assume that every download error is a network failure.

Fix a padlock, missing purchase, or license error
Confirm the account that owns the game
Sign in to the PS5 user account that bought the game and check the account’s transaction history. A different local user can play a purchased title only when the owner’s sharing configuration permits it. If the purchase is not in the transaction history, stop treating the symptom as a corrupted installation and resolve the account or purchase issue first.
Check PlayStation Plus access
If access comes through PlayStation Plus rather than a separate purchase, verify that the subscription is active and that the title is still included in the relevant PlayStation Plus benefit. A game can disappear from access when the subscription or the applicable catalog benefit ends.
Check Console Sharing and Offline Play
When another user owns the game, check that owner’s Console Sharing and Offline Play setting on the PS5. The entitlement must be configured for sharing on that console. This is an account-setting check, not a reason to repeatedly reinstall the game.
Restore licenses
- Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses.
- Select the licenses to restore and wait for the process to finish.
- Alternatively, highlight the affected game in the home screen or library, press Options, and choose Restore License.
- Start the game again and check whether the padlock or missing entitlement has cleared.
Restoring licenses does not delete saved data. It may help with a padlock unrelated to an expired PlayStation Plus subscription, missing games or add-ons, and some crashes, but it cannot create an entitlement that the account does not have.

Purchased PlayStation Store games should appear in the game library. If the transaction is present but the title is absent, check the library’s hidden-games section and unhide it before downloading. If the transaction is not present, verify that you are viewing the correct buying account and that the purchase completed.

Enter PS5 Safe Mode safely
Safe Mode starts the console with a limited set of functions so you can perform maintenance outside the normal interface.
- Turn off the PS5 completely by holding the power button for about three seconds.
- After the console is off, press and hold the power button again.
- Release it after the second beep; the second beep occurs about seven seconds after pressing.
- Connect the DualSense controller to the PS5 with a USB data cable and press the controller’s PS button.
A cable that only supplies power may not establish the required data connection. The Safe Mode procedure requires a USB-connected controller; no particular cable model is required by the official instructions.
Choose the operation that matches the symptom
| Safe Mode operation | What it does | When it belongs in this guide |
|---|---|---|
| Clear System Software Cache | Clears cached system data used by the console. | System-feature problems or performance drops, and the cache portion of download troubleshooting. |
| Rebuild Database | Scans the drive and creates a new content database. | Persistent system-feature problems or a game icon that remains after deletion; also listed for certain download and update failures. |
| Reset PS5 | Resets the console and can remove user data, games, and settings. | A later escalation only, after backups and less disruptive remedies. |
The wording presented by the console can vary with system-software version and region. Select the exact option requested by the current PlayStation support instruction for your symptom. Do not call a database rebuild a factory reset, and do not select a reset merely because a download is slow.
Back up before reinstalling or resetting
Deleting and reinstalling a game normally targets the application files, while a console reset is potentially much broader. Before resetting the PS5 or reinstalling system software, back up saved data and any other data you cannot replace. Keep the original save when testing a new game so that a suspected corrupted save can be compared with a known-good start. If a reset is unavoidable, read the on-screen warning for the selected reset option and confirm that your backup is complete before proceeding.
When to contact PlayStation Support or Repairs
Escalate when the official sequence for the exact symptom or code does not resolve the issue, when several games fail, or when the console shows signs of a broader hardware or system fault. Provide support with:
- The complete error code and message, copied exactly.
- The game or application name and whether it is on internal or USB extended storage.
- A concise description of what happens and the steps that reproduce it.
- The date and time of the failed attempt.
- A screenshot or video, if possible.
- Which reversible steps you already completed and what changed after each one.
The PS5 error-code index separates download, license-verification, account, network, and system-software failures. Use that index to identify the category, but do not infer a cause from the category alone. PlayStation Support or PlayStation Repairs can direct the next step when software recovery has been exhausted.
A compact decision path for overlapping symptoms
- Is there a padlock, missing purchase, or entitlement message? Check the buying account, transaction history, PlayStation Plus status, Console Sharing and Offline Play, and restore licenses.
- Does the game close or freeze after it launches? Confirm installation, update the game and system, test without the existing save, restore licenses if digital entitlement is also questionable, then reinstall.
- Does the download or update fail before the game can launch? Record the code, retry the queue item, check service status, test the network, update system software, verify storage, and follow the code-specific sequence.
- Does the problem persist after those checks? Use the matching Safe Mode cache/database operation, not Reset PS5, and escalate with the evidence you recorded.
This order keeps account problems from being mistaken for file problems, keeps network failures from being treated as license failures, and delays irreversible recovery until the evidence justifies it.
