- Unmute everything. Check PS4 volume (if you use it), TV volume, and any soundbar/receiver remote. Look for a mute icon on the TV and on the receiver.
- Confirm the correct input. On your TV/soundbar, pick the HDMI input your PS4 uses (e.g., HDMI 2). Switch away to another input, then back.
- Play system audio. Use the PS4 menu and open Settings to confirm sound isn’t app-specific.
- Power-cycle once. Turn off PS4 fully (hold the power button on the console until it beeps, then choose Turn Off PS4), then turn it back on after 30 seconds.
If sound still doesn’t appear, move to PS4 output settings and HDMI/TV configuration.
Fix #1: confirm the PS4 audio output (HDMI, optical, or headset)
The PS4 can route audio through HDMI, optical (TOSLINK), or a connected headset. If the output target doesn’t match your cables and TV settings, you’ll get silence.
- On your PS4 home screen, go to Settings.
- Select Sound and Screen.
- Choose Audio Output Settings.
- Set Primary Output Port based on your setup:
- HDMI if your PS4 is connected to the TV/soundbar via HDMI only.
- Digital Out (Optical) if you use an optical cable to a receiver/soundbar.
- Headset Connected to Controller if you’re using a wired 3.5 mm headset plugged into the DualShock 4.
- For the same page, set Audio Format (Priority) to a safe option:
- Try Bitstream (Dolby) or Bitstream (DTS) only if your TV/receiver explicitly supports them.
- When in doubt, pick Linear PCM.
- After changing values, back out and test the PS4 menu audio.
Common symptom: HDMI output set to the wrong port, or Bitstream selected while the TV/receiver expects PCM. Silence is a classic result.

Audio handshakes between PS4, HDMI, and audio gear can get “stuck.” A full power restart forces re-negotiation.
- Power off PS4 using Turn Off PS4.
- Power off your TV and any soundbar/AV receiver.
- Unplug power from the receiver/soundbar (optional but helpful) for 60 seconds.
- Plug everything back in and turn on in this order:
- TV first
- Receiver/soundbar second
- PS4 last
- Test sound in the PS4 menu.
If you see on-screen “Audio system ready” or similar messages, wait 5–10 seconds before judging the result.

Fix #3: remove common HDMI audio conflicts
Some HDMI devices, splitters, and capture devices can interfere with audio negotiation. Isolate the PS4 by simplifying the HDMI chain.
- Disconnect any HDMI splitter, HDMI switch, or capture card.
- Connect the PS4 directly to the TV’s HDMI port.
- On the PS4, go to Settings > Sound and Screen > Audio Output Settings.
- Set Primary Output Port to HDMI.
- Set Audio Format (Priority) to Linear PCM.
- Test audio in the PS4 menu for 10–20 seconds.
If sound works with direct connection, your issue is likely with the HDMI intermediary or the receiver/soundbar input mode.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFix #4: check TV/soundbar settings (eARC/ARC, HDMI audio, output mode)
Even if the PS4 is set correctly, your TV or soundbar may be outputting audio to the wrong route (ARC/eARC instead of HDMI, for example).
- Open your TV’s audio settings menu.
- Find and set Digital Audio Output or Audio System to match your hardware:
- If using a soundbar/receiver via HDMI ARC/eARC, make sure ARC/eARC is enabled.
- If using a direct HDMI cable from PS4 to the TV and using TV speakers, set Audio Output to TV Speakers or equivalent.
- If using an optical cable, set TV output to Optical / PCM (wording varies) and disable any conflicting “Auto/Bitstream” option temporarily.
- Restart the PS4 after changing TV output mode.
Version-specific gotcha: Many modern TVs added eARC behavior; if eARC is enabled but your soundbar doesn’t support the negotiated format, you can end up with silence. Try switching to standard ARC or turning eARC off temporarily.
Fix #5: test whether sound works with headphones or a different output
This isolates whether the PS4 is producing audio at all.

- HDMI A Male to A Male Cable: Supports Ethernet, 3D, 4K video and Audio Return Channel (ARC)
- Connects Blu-ray players, Fire TV, Apple TV, PS5, PS4, PS3, XBox One, Xbox 360, computers and other HDMI-enabled devices to TVs, displays, A/V receivers and more
- Cable allows you to share an Internet connection among multiple devices without the need for a separate Ethernet cable
- Meets HDMI standards (4K Video at 60 Hz, 2160p, 48 bit/px color depth) that supports bandwidth up to 18Gbps and backwards compatible with earlier versions.
- Cable Length: 6 feet (1.8 meters), black color.
- Plug a known working wired 3.5 mm headset into the DualShock 4.
- On the PS4, go to Settings > Sound and Screen > Audio Output Settings.
- Set Primary Output Port to Headset Connected to Controller.
- Play PS4 menu audio again.
If you hear sound on the controller but not through HDMI, the problem is almost certainly HDMI output settings or TV/soundbar routing. If you hear nothing anywhere, it points to a deeper PS4 audio setting or hardware issue.
Fix #6: turn off “HDCP/HDMI enhancements” that can break audio handshakes
Some TVs and soundbars apply processing features that affect HDMI negotiation—especially after firmware updates. Disabling them can restore audio.
- On your TV, open Picture or HDMI Settings (names vary).
- Temporarily disable features related to HDMI routing/processing, such as:
- HDMI signal format enhancements (or similar)
- AI sound / sound modes that change output routing
- Digital audio out: Auto (set explicitly to PCM if available)
- Restart PS4 and test sound.
If your TV has a “Gaming” picture mode, test both with and without audio processing features. The goal is to identify whether audio stops after HDMI changes.
Fix #7: rebuild PS4 audio settings in Safe Mode
If normal settings changes don’t help, resetting PS4’s audio-related configuration can restore proper output selection.
- Turn off the PS4 completely.
- Hold the power button until you hear two beeps (this indicates Safe Mode).
- Connect a controller with a USB cable and press the PS button on it.
- Select Change Resolution (first try). Set it to a known standard such as 1080p.
- Return to Safe Mode and select Restore Default Settings.
- Restart PS4 normally and revisit Settings > Sound and Screen > Audio Output Settings.
- Set Primary Output Port correctly and Audio Format (Priority) to Linear PCM as a stable starting point.
If sound returns, you can re-enable advanced formats (Dolby/DTS) later if your TV/receiver supports them.

Fix #8: test with another HDMI port/cable and bypass the receiver
Hardware issues are still common in 2024: a failing HDMI cable, a bad HDMI port on the TV, or an in-between receiver input that won’t carry audio correctly.
- Try a different HDMI port on your TV (e.g., HDMI 1 instead of HDMI 2).
- Use a different HDMI cable if available. Prefer a cable you know works with another device.
- If you use a receiver/soundbar, bypass it temporarily:
- PS4 > HDMI > TV directly
- Then test audio
- If direct connection works, reconnect the receiver/soundbar and ensure you selected the correct input mode (HDMI ARC vs standard HDMI vs optical).
Don’t ignore cable age—HDMI failures often show up as “audio only missing” or “audio after reboot only.”
Fix #9: check controller audio (DualShock 4) and 3.5 mm headset behavior
Sometimes the PS4 has sound, but the controller output settings block it.
- Plug the headset firmly into the DualShock 4 jack.
- In Settings > Sound and Screen > Audio Output Settings, set Primary Output Port to Headset Connected to Controller.
- Check the headset volume and try a different headset if you have one.
- Test another audio source on PS4 (an in-game sound or system menu tone).
Gotcha: Some headsets don’t fully seat in the jack, leading to intermittent/no audio. If possible, test with a different brand or adapter.

Common PS4 no-sound mistakes (and what to do instead)
- Leaving Audio Format on Bitstream while using PCM-only output. Fix: switch Audio Format (Priority) to Linear PCM and test.
- Using HDMI audio routing but selecting the optical output port on PS4. Fix: set Primary Output Port to HDMI.
- Assuming ARC/eARC is automatic. Fix: confirm TV/soundbar audio output routing explicitly and restart devices.
- Changing PS4 settings without rebooting audio gear. Fix: power-cycle TV/receiver and then PS4.
- Testing only one app. Fix: test the PS4 menu and system sounds too.

Comparisons: PS4 vs PS5-style fixes (what transfers and what doesn’t)
Some troubleshooting ideas are universal across PlayStation consoles, but PS4 specifics matter.
- Transfers: Power-cycling devices, setting output to PCM/compatible formats, trying a different HDMI port/cable, and using direct HDMI bypass all apply to PS4 and PS5.
- Doesn’t always transfer: PS5 menu labels and audio routing options differ. On PS4, the most critical setting is Audio Output Settings > Primary Output Port and the Audio Format (Priority) format.
- Most common PS4-specific trigger: Changing TV sound output mode (Auto/Bitstream/ARC) without updating PS4 audio format, which leads to silence.
FAQs
Why does my PS4 show video but no sound?
That usually means the HDMI handshake succeeded for video but audio routing didn’t—commonly due to mismatched output ports (HDMI vs optical) or an incompatible audio format (Bitstream vs PCM). Try setting PS4 Primary Output Port to HDMI and Audio Format (Priority) to Linear PCM, then re-check TV/soundbar audio output.
Does setting Audio Format (Priority) to Linear PCM always fix it?
It fixes a large percentage of cases because PCM is widely supported. If you need Dolby/DTS, you can re-enable it after audio works. If PCM still produces no sound, focus on port selection, TV routing, or the HDMI cable/port.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
My sound works sometimes—why does it disappear after reboot?
Intermittent audio after power cycles often points to ARC/eARC handshakes, HDMI settings, or a fragile HDMI connection. Try direct PS4 → TV testing, power-cycle in the order TV → receiver → PS4, and confirm the receiver input is correct.
Will a faulty HDMI cable cause only audio to fail?
Yes. HDMI issues can show up as no audio while video remains stable. Swapping the HDMI cable is one of the fastest confirmation steps.
How can I tell if the problem is with my TV or my PS4?
Test with another device on the same HDMI port (like a streaming stick). If the port works with another device but not the PS4, the issue is likely PS4 output settings or the PS4-to-audio-device handshake.
Bottom Line
When your PS4 has no sound, start by confirming the correct PS4 Audio Output Settings (port and format), then verify TV/soundbar routing (ARC/eARC and output mode). Most cases resolve after switching to HDMI and Linear PCM, then restarting devices.
If it still doesn’t work, isolate the audio path with direct HDMI testing, try a different HDMI cable/port, and use Safe Mode to restore default settings and resolution.
