How to fix ‘PS4 error NP-36006-5’?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PS4 error NP-36006-5 usually appears when the console detects a problem with the local user profile, most often involving corrupted trophy data or profile information that no longer matches what is stored on PlayStation Network. It can stop you from launching games or using a specific account, which makes it look serious, but it is often fixable without deleting your games or losing progress.

The safest approach is to deal with the profile data first: sync trophies with PSN, protect your saved data, and then recreate the affected user profile if needed. If the issue is caused by corrupted system indexing rather than the profile itself, rebuilding the PS4 database in Safe Mode can also help.

This guide walks through the main fixes in the safest order, starting with trophy syncing and profile repair before moving to database rebuilding and prevention steps that reduce the chance of the error returning.

What PS4 Error NP-36006-5 Means

PS4 error NP-36006-5 usually means the console has detected a problem with the local data tied to a user profile, most often trophy data. The message commonly appears when you try to launch a game, open an application, sign in with a specific user, or continue playing after the system has failed to read profile-related information correctly. In many cases, the game itself is not broken; the issue is with the user account data stored on the PS4.

This error is closely linked to the way the PS4 stores and compares trophy information. Your console keeps trophy data locally, while PlayStation Network stores synced trophy data online. If the local trophy database becomes corrupted, incomplete, or out of sync with PSN, the PS4 may block the affected profile from launching games normally. That is one user on the same console may get NP-36006-5 while another user can open the same game without any problem.

Corruption can happen after an interrupted trophy sync, a sudden power loss, a system crash, a failed update, or removing storage while the console is active. It may also appear after restoring data from a backup, moving from one console to another, or using a profile that has old trophy records that never fully synced. The error is not usually a sign that your PlayStation Network account is banned or that your game license has been revoked.

What the error affects

  • The local PS4 user profile: The issue is usually attached to one user on the console, not necessarily every account.
  • Trophy records: Unsynced or damaged trophy entries are one of the most common triggers.
  • Game launching: Some games may refuse to start under the affected profile until the corrupted data is corrected.
  • Saved data access: Your saves are separate from trophies, but you should still back them up before deleting or recreating a user profile.

The safest way to think of NP-36006-5 is as a profile data integrity problem. The PS4 is finding something inconsistent in the user’s local records and stops the process to avoid loading invalid data. Most fixes focus on forcing trophy data to sync properly, removing the damaged local user profile, then signing back in so the console can rebuild clean profile information from PlayStation Network.

Common Causes of NP-36006-5 on PS4

PS4 error NP-36006-5 is most often linked to damaged user-profile data, especially trophy information that the console cannot read or sync correctly. The error can appear when launching a game, opening a user account, or trying to connect profile activity with PlayStation Network. In many cases, the game itself is not the main problem; the affected local user profile contains inconsistent trophy or account metadata that causes the system to stop the action.

The most common trigger is corrupted trophy data. Trophies are stored locally on the PS4 and then synced to PSN. If the local trophy database becomes incomplete, mismatched, or unreadable, the console may fail to verify the user profile and show NP-36006-5. This can happen after a game crashes while trophies are being updated, after the console loses power during gameplay, or when trophy data for a specific title does not match what is already stored online.

  • Interrupted trophy syncing: Turning off the PS4, losing internet connection, or signing out while trophies are syncing can leave local trophy records in a bad state.
  • Damaged local user profile: The user account stored on the console may become corrupted even if the PSN account itself is fine.
  • Improper shutdowns: Pulling the power cable, power outages, or repeated hard resets can damage system and profile databases.
  • Game crashes during profile updates: If a game freezes while saving progress, unlocking trophies, or updating user data, the profile can become inconsistent.
  • Storage drive issues: A failing internal hard drive or external storage device can cause read/write errors that affect profile, save, or trophy files.
  • Old system software: Running outdated PS4 firmware can create compatibility or sync problems with newer PSN services and game updates.

Another frequent cause is deleting or moving content in a way that leaves the profile expecting data that no longer exists. For example, if a game is removed while its trophy data is still queued to sync, or if saved data is restored from a USB drive without matching profile information, the PS4 may detect a mismatch. This is more likely on consoles with several local users, shared games, or profiles that have been copied across systems through backup and restore tools.

Network problems can also contribute, but they are usually not the only cause. A weak connection may prevent trophies from uploading, while the corrupted local data remains on the console. That is simply reconnecting to Wi-Fi often does not fix NP-36006-5 by itself. The safest approach is to first sync any readable trophies, then back up saved data, and only then try profile-level fixes such as deleting and recreating the affected user or rebuilding the PS4 database.

Sync Your Trophies With PlayStation Network

The safest first fix for PS4 error NP-36006-5 is to sync the affected user’s trophies with PlayStation Network. This error is commonly tied to damaged local profile or trophy records, and a trophy sync forces the console to compare the trophies stored on the PS4 with the copy held on Sony’s servers. If the console is stuck because of a bad local trophy entry, syncing can refresh that data without deleting the user, saves, games, or captures.

Before you start, make sure the PS4 is connected to the internet and that PlayStation Network is available. Sign in with the same PSN account that shows the error. If the error appears when launching a specific game, close the game first from the home screen by pressing the Options button on the game tile and selecting Close Application. Then try the trophy sync from the PS4 menus.

  1. From the PS4 home screen, go to Trophies.
  2. Highlight the trophy list and press the Options button on the controller.
  3. Select Sync with PlayStation Network.
  4. Wait for the sync to finish. Do not turn off the console or disconnect the network during this process.
  5. After syncing, restart the PS4 and try opening the game or app that triggered NP-36006-5.

If the trophy sync stops or fails, check the error message and try again after a few minutes. A slow connection, PSN maintenance, or a large trophy list can make the sync take longer than expected. You can also test the connection by going to Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection. If the PS4 is on Wi-Fi and the sync keeps failing, temporarily switch to a wired Ethernet connection or move the console closer to the router.

If the trophy list will not open

Sometimes NP-36006-5 appears before you can even access the trophy screen, or the trophy list may freeze while loading. In that case, try signing out and back in before syncing. Go to Settings > Account Management > Sign Out, restart the console, then sign in again from the same menu. After signing in, open Trophies and run Sync with PlayStation Network again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You should also open the game that last caused the problem only after the sync has completed. If the game recently unlocked a trophy and then crashed, that trophy record may be the item causing the conflict. A completed PSN sync gives the console a cleaner reference point, which can be enough to stop the profile error from appearing. If NP-36006-5 returns immediately after a successful trophy sync, the next safe step is to remove and recreate the affected local user profile while keeping the PSN account and backed-up saved data intact.

Delete and Recreate the Affected User Profile

If trophy syncing does not clear PS4 error NP-36006-5, the next safe fix is to remove the affected local user profile from the console and create it again. This targets corrupted profile data stored on the PS4, while your PlayStation Network account, purchased games, online trophies, and cloud saves remain tied to your PSN account. The goal is to delete only the damaged local user container, then sign back in and let the console rebuild the profile data cleanly.

Before deleting anything, make sure your saved data is protected. If you have PlayStation Plus, upload saves to cloud storage from Settings > Application Saved Data Management > Saved Data in System Storage > Upload to Online Storage. If you do not use PS Plus, copy saves to a USB drive by choosing Copy to USB Storage Device from the same menu. Also confirm that your trophies have synced by opening Trophies, pressing Options, and selecting Sync with PlayStation Network.

  1. Sign in to a different local user on the PS4, preferably one with administrator access. If needed, create a temporary user from the login screen.
  2. Go to Settings > Login Settings > User Management > Delete User.
  3. Select the user profile that triggers NP-36006-5.
  4. Read the warning carefully. This removes that user’s local data from the console, including local saves that were not backed up.
  5. Choose Delete and wait for the process to finish.
  6. Restart the PS4 to clear the old session data.
  7. From the login screen, choose New User > Create a User.
  8. Accept the system prompts, then sign in with the same PlayStation Network account that was linked to the deleted profile.

After signing in, open Trophies and let the PS4 resync your trophy list from PlayStation Network. Then restore your saved games if needed. For cloud saves, go to Settings > Application Saved Data Management > Saved Data in Online Storage > Download to System Storage. For USB backups, use Saved Data on USB Storage Device > Copy to System Storage. Launch the game that previously caused the error and check whether it now starts normally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this method only for the user profile affected by the error. Do not delete other users unless they also have corrupted data, and do not initialize the PS4 for this issue unless simpler recovery steps fail. Recreating the profile is usually enough because NP-36006-5 is commonly linked to damaged local user or trophy metadata, not the entire console installation. If the error returns immediately after restoring a specific save file, that save may also be corrupted, so test the game once before copying all saves back.

Rebuild the PS4 Database in Safe Mode

If PS4 error NP-36006-5 still appears after syncing trophies and recreating the affected local user, the next safe repair step is to rebuild the PS4 database. This process scans the internal drive and creates a fresh index of installed games, applications, updates, captures, and user-related system records. When trophy or profile entries are stuck in a bad state, a database rebuild can help the console read them correctly again without deleting your installed games or saved data.

Rebuilding the database is different from initializing the PS4. It does not wipe the console, reset it to factory settings, or remove your PlayStation Network account. However, it can reorganize the home screen, remove some custom folders, and make the system re-check content licenses or notifications. If the hard drive has a large amount of content or has not been maintained for a long time, the process may take anywhere from a few minutes to over an hour.

How to rebuild the PS4 database

  1. Turn off the PS4 completely. Do not use Rest Mode. Wait until the power light stops blinking and the console is fully off.
  2. Connect your DualShock 4 controller to the PS4 with a USB cable. Bluetooth controls do not work in Safe Mode.
  3. Press and hold the power button on the console. Keep holding it until you hear two beeps: one when you first press it, and a second beep about seven seconds later.
  4. Release the power button after the second beep. The PS4 should start in Safe Mode.
  5. Press the PS button on the connected controller.
  6. Select 5. Rebuild Database from the Safe Mode menu.
  7. Confirm the action and allow the PS4 to complete the scan. Do not unplug the console or force it off while the rebuild is running.

After the PS4 restarts, sign in to the same user profile that was showing NP-36006-5 and launch the game that triggered the error. If the game opens normally, check the trophy list from the PS4 menu and then try syncing trophies with PlayStation Network again. A successful sync after the rebuild usually means the local trophy index has been repaired enough for the system and PSN to communicate properly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the error returns immediately after rebuilding the database, treat that as a sign that the damaged data may be tied more deeply to the local user profile, the game’s saved data, or the internal storage drive. At that point, back up your saved data to PS Plus cloud storage or a USB drive before trying more disruptive steps such as deleting the affected game data, testing with a new internal drive, or initializing the console. For many NP-36006-5 cases, though, rebuilding the database is a safe middle step that fixes corrupted indexing without sacrificing your games or saves.

Back Up Saved Data Before Trying Advanced Fixes

Before you initialize the PS4, replace the internal drive, delete mulle users, or perform any repair that affects system storage, back up your saved data. Error NP-36006-5 is often tied to damaged profile or trophy data, but troubleshooting can still put local saves at risk if you remove the wrong user or reset the console without a copy. A safe backup lets you continue from your latest progress after recreating the profile or restoring the system.

If you have PlayStation Plus, the simplest method is to upload saves to online storage. Sign in with the affected PlayStation Network account, then go to Settings > Application Saved Data Management > Saved Data in System Storage > Upload to Online Storage. Select the games you want to protect, choose the save files, and upload them. If the console asks whether to overwrite an existing cloud save, check the date and time carefully so you do not replace a newer save with an older one.

You can also copy saves to a USB storage device formatted as exFAT or FAT32. Connect the drive to the PS4, then open Settings > Application Saved Data Management > Saved Data in System Storage > Copy to USB Storage Device. Pick each game, select the save files, and copy them to the USB drive. This is useful if you do not have PlayStation Plus or if you want a second offline backup before making larger changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Back up saves for every active user: saved data is tied to the PS4 user and PSN account that created it.
  • Check trophy sync separately: trophies are not backed up through save-data copy, so sync them with PlayStation Network first.
  • Do not delete the only local copy: confirm your cloud or USB backup exists before removing the profile.
  • Keep the USB drive connected until copying finishes: interrupting the transfer can create incomplete backup files.

After your saves are backed up, you can move on to advanced fixes with less risk. For example, you can initialize the PS4 from Settings > Initialization, test a different internal drive, or restore the console after a deeper storage problem. When the console is working again, sign in with the same PSN account and restore your saves from Application Saved Data Management using either Download to System Storage for cloud saves or Copy to System Storage for USB backups.

How to Prevent NP-36006-5 From Returning

After you have fixed PS4 error NP-36006-5, the best way to keep it from coming back is to protect the two areas most often involved: your local user profile and your trophy data. The error usually appears when the console cannot read or validate profile-related information correctly, especially after a failed trophy sync, an interrupted shutdown, or damaged local data. A few regular habits can greatly reduce the chance of the same profile becoming unusable again.

Keep trophy data synced regularly

Trophy data is one of the most common triggers for NP-36006-5, so avoid leaving trophies stored only on the console for long periods. If you earn trophies while offline, connect to PlayStation Network as soon as possible and sync them. From the PS4 home screen, go to Trophies, press Options, then choose Sync with PlayStation Network. Wait for the process to complete before launching another game, switching users, or turning off the console.

  • Sync before deleting users: If you plan to remove a local profile, sync its trophies first so the PSN copy is current.
  • Sync after long offline sessions: This is especially useful if you play single-player games without an internet connection.
  • Check for sync errors: If trophy syncing fails, retry before continuing with major system changes.

Shut down the PS4 properly

Many profile and database issues start when the console loses power while writing data. Avoid unplugging the PS4 while it is on or in Rest Mode, and do not switch off the power strip immediately after pressing the power button. Use Power > Turn Off PS4 and wait until the light bar fully turns off. If your area has frequent power cuts, consider using a surge protector or a small UPS to reduce the risk of file corruption during saves, updates, or trophy writes.

Maintain healthy saved data and profile backups

Even if NP-36006-5 is usually tied to profile or trophy data rather than game saves, keeping backups makes recovery much safer. If you have PlayStation Plus, enable cloud uploads for saved data under Settings > Application Saved Data Management > Auto-Upload. You can also copy saves to a USB drive from the same menu. Before deleting a user profile, rebuilding the database, initializing the console, or replacing the hard drive, confirm that saves have been uploaded or copied.

Prevention habit Where to do it How often
Sync trophies Trophies > Options > Sync with PlayStation Network After offline play or new trophy unlocks
Back up saves Application Saved Data Management Weekly or before repairs
Rebuild database Safe Mode > Rebuild Database Only when menus, games, or profiles behave oddly
Install system updates Settings > System Software Update Whenever a new update is available

It also helps to keep enough free storage space on the internal drive. A nearly full PS4 can behave unpredictably when downloading patches, writing save files, or updating profile data. Try to keep at least 50–100 GB free if possible, especially on consoles with many large games installed. Delete old captures, unused games, and incomplete downloads to give the system room to manage its database cleanly.

If NP-36006-5 returns repeatedly on the same console after syncing trophies, recreating the profile, and rebuilding the database, consider the health of the internal hard drive. Slow loading, missing icons, corrupted downloads, and frequent database repairs can point to a failing drive. In that case, back up your saves and captures, then replace the drive or reinstall the system software using Sony’s official PS4 reinstallation file.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does PS4 error NP-36006-5 mean my console is broken?

No. NP-36006-5 usually points to corrupted trophy or user profile data, not a hardware failure. In most cases, syncing trophies, recreating the affected user profile, or rebuilding the PS4 database fixes it without replacing the console.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will deleting my PS4 user profile erase my games and saves?

Deleting the local user profile can remove locally stored save data for that user, so back up your saves first to PlayStation Plus cloud storage or a USB drive. Your purchased games, trophies already synced to PSN, and account access are tied to your PlayStation Network account and can be restored after signing in again.

What should I do first when NP-36006-5 appears?

Start by syncing your trophies with PlayStation Network from the Trophies menu. If the sync completes successfully, restart the PS4 and try opening the game again. This is the safest first step because the error is often triggered by trophy data that has not synced correctly.

Is rebuilding the PS4 database safe for fixing NP-36006-5?

Yes, rebuilding the database in Safe Mode is generally safe and does not delete your installed games, accounts, or saves. It reorganizes system data and can clear corrupted entries linked to profiles, trophies, or game launches. The process may take a few minutes or longer depending on how much data is on the drive.

How can I stop NP-36006-5 from coming back?

Regularly sync trophies while connected to PSN, avoid turning off the console during trophy unlocks or game saves, and keep the PS4 system software updated. It also helps to back up saved data often, especially before deleting profiles, changing drives, or troubleshooting repeated crashes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom Line

PS4 error NP-36006-5 usually points to corrupted trophy or local profile data, so the safest fix is to sync trophies first, then work through profile recreation and database rebuilding only if needed. Avoid deleting anything before your saves and trophies are backed up or synced.

Start with the least risky steps, confirm your data is safe, and test the affected account after each fix. If the error keeps returning even after rebuilding the database and recreating the user profile, contact PlayStation Support to check for account-side or storage-related issues.
