Start with the least destructive checks: let the PS2 game finish installing, install any game update, and update PS5 system software. If the fault remains, test the title without its existing save, reinstall it, and then investigate controller compatibility. A PlayStation 2 controller cannot be used with a PS5; pair a compatible DualSense over USB instead. Safe Mode maintenance belongs later in the process, and a full reset should be the last resort because it deletes user data.
These are Sony’s general PS5 game-troubleshooting measures, not a guaranteed cure for every PS2 emulation defect. The most useful diagnosis comes from comparing one affected title with other games and recording exactly what happens.

Identify what is actually failing
Write down the title, the exact point at which the problem appears, and whether it is a graphical defect, a freeze, a crash, or an input failure. Note any error code and the game and PS5 software versions shown on the console. Then test another game if possible. This first split matters because a fault limited to one title calls for a different escalation path from a problem affecting several games.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Pattern | What it suggests | Best next action |
|---|---|---|
| One PS2 title fails while other games work | A title-specific installation, save, software, or compatibility problem is more likely | Run the update, save-isolation, and reinstall checks, then contact that game’s publisher if it persists |
| Several games freeze, crash, or show related system symptoms | The console or its system software may be involved | Complete system-level checks and use PlayStation Repairs if the pattern continues |
| A legacy PS2 controller is not detected | The controller is outside PS5 compatibility | Use a PS5-compatible controller and pair it by USB |
| A compatible controller works in other games but not one PS2 title | A title-specific input defect or mapping limitation is possible | Record the exact buttons and circumstances and report them to the publisher or the appropriate support team |
Classify the failure before changing anything. A missing texture that occurs in one scene is not the same diagnostic case as a console-wide shutdown, and a controller that works everywhere except one title should not be treated like a dead controller. This prevents destructive steps from obscuring the original symptom.

Run Sony’s low-risk game checks first
Sony’s general PS5 guidance for a digital game that crashes or freezes starts with installation and software updates. These steps apply to PS2 Classics and other digital games as general PS5 troubleshooting; Sony does not describe them as a guaranteed cure for an emulation defect.
- Confirm the download and installation are complete. Do not troubleshoot while the title is still downloading or installing. Wait for the console to show the game as ready to play, including any post-download installation activity.
- Check for a game update. Highlight the game on the PS5 home screen, open its options menu, and use the update check. Install the update before testing again.
- Update PS5 system software. Install any pending console update, restart when prompted, and launch the title again. A current system build removes one common source of avoidable incompatibility.
After each step, repeat the same action that caused the problem. Testing the same menu, level transition, or button press makes the result comparable. If the game works after an update, note which update was installed; if nothing changes, that negative result is useful when you contact support.
If the title still fails after those checks, do not repeatedly force-close it and assume the emulator itself is damaged. Move to save isolation so you can distinguish a bad saved state from a broader title problem.

Test whether saved data triggers the failure
Start a clean session without deleting your only save
When feasible, start the game from the beginning or use a separate save slot without loading the existing data. The purpose is diagnostic: if a new session runs past the point where the old one freezes, the saved data may be associated with the symptom. If both the clean session and the existing save fail at the same point, the cause is less likely to be that particular save.
Do not begin by deleting your only save. Preserve it until you have established that it is the trigger and, where possible, backed it up through your normal PS5 save-data options. A clean-start test is reversible; deleting a unique save may not be.
Keep the test controlled. Use the same controller, reach the same location if practical, and write down whether the failure happens before a save is loaded or only after selecting Continue. A result that changes when you use a new session narrows the case even if it does not prove the save is corrupted.
Delete and reinstall the game
If installation, update, system-software, and save-isolation checks do not change the behavior, Sony’s digital-game guidance recommends deleting and reinstalling the game. Reinstalling replaces the local game files; it does not prove that a particular PS2 emulation defect has been fixed.

- Ensure you can download the title again from your game library and that you know which save data you intend to keep.
- Delete the installed game from the PS5 storage-management controls, leaving saved data untouched unless you have deliberately chosen to remove it.
- Download the title again, wait for the full installation to finish, install any available update, and launch it before restoring the old save if you are testing whether that save is implicated.
- Repeat the same action that originally produced the glitch or crash. Record whether the failure moved, disappeared, or remained identical.
An unchanged failure after a clean reinstall is useful evidence for support. Include that result rather than describing the problem simply as “it still crashes.” Also distinguish a failure during the download or installation phase from one that occurs after the title reaches its main menu; those are different facts for a support technician to investigate.
Fix controller and input problems by checking compatibility first
Why a PS2 controller will not work directly
PS5 compatibility is not the same as physical connectivity. Sony’s PS5 safety documentation states: “Controllers intended for use with PlayStation®, PlayStation®2, and PlayStation®3 consoles, such as the analog controllers (DUALSHOCK® and DUALSHOCK®2) and the DUALSHOCK®3 wireless controller, are not compatible with the PS5 console.” In practical terms, a genuine PS2 controller is not a supported PS5 input device, even if an adapter or cable appears to connect it.
That compatibility rule is the first comparison to make: a legacy controller is an unsupported device, while a PS5-compatible DualSense is the standard control to use for a diagnostic test. Buying a replacement controller is relevant only when the current device is incompatible or a supported controller has a confirmed hardware problem. It is not a remedy for missing textures, incorrect colors, or crashes.
Pair a DualSense as a controlled test
- Connect the DualSense to the PS5 with a USB cable.
- Press the PS button on the controller.
- Wait for the console to register it, then launch the PS2 title and test the exact input that previously failed.
This wired pairing check helps separate a wireless-pairing problem from a game-specific input problem. It does not establish that replacing a controller will cure a graphical glitch, a crash, or a title-specific mapping bug. If the DualSense works in other games but fails only in one PS2 title, document the button, menu, or gameplay state involved and report it as a title-specific issue.
Separate hardware symptoms from game symptoms
- If the controller is not recognized anywhere on the PS5, investigate pairing, cable, charging, or console hardware separately from the PS2 title.
- If it works in other games but one title ignores an input, repeat the test after updating and reinstalling that title.
- If a legacy controller is the only device being tested, switch to a PS5-compatible controller before concluding that emulation has broken input.
- Record whether the failure affects every button, one button, analog movement, or only a particular menu. Specific behavior is easier for a publisher to reproduce than a general claim that “the controller is broken.”
The available Sony documentation does not establish a universal remapping switch, emulator compatibility toggle, or title-by-title controller workaround. Avoid changing undocumented settings at random; capture the behavior and seek a game-specific answer.
Address visual glitches without inventing emulator settings
Screen corruption, missing textures, incorrect colors, audio-visual desynchronization, or a broken transition can look different from a full crash, but the safe first sequence is the same: complete installation, update the title, update PS5 system software, test without the existing save, and reinstall if necessary.
There is no established general-purpose PS2 emulator graphics menu or compatibility switch identified for these PS5 releases in Sony’s guidance. Do not promise that clearing a cache, changing a resolution, or toggling a hidden renderer will repair a particular title. If the defect is repeatable, note the exact scene, whether it appears from a new game, and whether another title shows the same behavior. That information is more useful than a list of speculative settings.

For a visual issue, describe what remains visible and what the console does next: does the game continue with a distorted image, stop responding, return to the home screen, or display an error? Those distinctions help separate a rendering symptom from a crash. Capture a screenshot or video when possible, especially if the defect disappears after restarting.
Use Safe Mode only after the game-level checks
PS5 Safe Mode offers system-level maintenance options, including updating system software, repairing storage, clearing the system-software cache, rebuilding the database, and reset options. These tools address console-level conditions; they are not documented as title-specific PS2 emulator controls.
Clear System Software Cache
Sony describes cache clearing as an option that can address system-feature issues or performance drops. Use it when more than a single game appears sluggish or unstable, or when ordinary restarts and updates have not helped. Follow the Safe Mode prompts exactly and test the affected title afterward. If only one title has a repeatable defect and every other game is normal, cache clearing should not replace the title’s update, save, and reinstall checks.
Rebuild Database
Rebuild Database scans the console’s content information and recreates the database. It is a maintenance step for broader system behavior, not a guaranteed repair for one damaged scene or one game’s input mapping. Allow the operation to finish before interrupting power, then repeat the same reproduction test.
Storage repair and system update
Safe Mode can also provide storage-repair and system-update paths. Consider them when several games show symptoms, installations behave unusually, or the console reports storage-related trouble. Keep the console powered through the operation and retest after it completes. Do not treat a Safe Mode menu as evidence that the PS2 title itself has an adjustable emulator profile.

Reset PS5 is a late-stage option
A PS5 reset deletes user data. Back up what you need before selecting any reset option, and do not use it as a routine response to a single PS2 title glitch. A reset is reasonable only after the lower-risk checks, Safe Mode maintenance, and support guidance have failed or a support technician specifically directs it. The data-loss risk is the main reason it belongs at the end of the sequence, not near the beginning.
Choose the right escalation route
One title, repeatable after reinstall
Contact the game’s publisher when the failure remains confined to one title after updates, a clean-start test, and reinstalling. For a Sony-published game, contact PlayStation Support. Explain that other games work, identify the exact title and software versions, and state which steps changed nothing.

Several titles or wider console symptoms
When multiple games exhibit crashes, freezes, input loss, or related system problems, Sony directs users toward PlayStation Repairs. This pattern can indicate a console or system-software issue rather than one PS2 release.
Prepare an actionable report
- Exact game title and edition, plus the date you tested it.
- The PS5 system-software version and any visible game version.
- A numbered reproduction sequence: menu path, save used, action taken, and the moment the failure occurs.
- Whether the problem happens from a new game and whether other titles are affected.
- The controller model, whether it was paired by USB, and the precise input that failed.
- The error code, if any, and a screenshot or video whenever possible.
Describe the result rather than the theory. “Freezes after selecting Continue in the second area on a new installation; DualSense paired by USB; three other games unaffected” gives support a testable case, while “the emulator is broken” does not.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsKeep the original evidence even after the symptom changes. Support may ask whether the issue survived a reinstall, appeared only with one save, or occurred on more than one controller. A short timeline of what you changed and what happened after each change prevents duplicated troubleshooting.

- Classify the symptom and test whether another game is affected.
- Verify the PS2 title is fully installed.
- Install the game’s update, then update PS5 system software.
- Start without the existing save when feasible; keep the original save rather than deleting it first.
- Delete and reinstall the game, then reproduce the same action.
- For input faults, stop using a PS2-era controller and pair a DualSense by USB and the PS button.
- If several games are affected, use Safe Mode’s update, storage-repair, cache, or database options as appropriate.
- Back up before considering a reset; treat reset as a final escalation because it deletes user data.
- Send a one-title problem to that publisher (or PlayStation Support for a Sony-published game); send broader console symptoms to PlayStation Repairs.
What these steps can—and cannot—establish
Updates, save isolation, and reinstalling are documented general PS5 game-crash measures. They can eliminate incomplete files, outdated software, or a save-associated trigger, but they do not constitute a verified universal PS2 emulator fix. A compatible DualSense proves that the PS5 can receive supported controller input; it does not prove that every PS2 title handles every button correctly. Safe Mode maintenance can address system-level conditions, while reset removes data and therefore carries a substantially higher cost.
When a glitch survives a clean installation and a new-game test, the most useful next step is a reproducible report with evidence. Title-specific support is the only reliable way to learn whether a particular release has a known compatibility defect or a publisher-issued workaround.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use an original PS2 controller on PS5?
No. Sony says controllers intended for PlayStation, PS2, and PS3 systems, including DUALSHOCK and DUALSHOCK 2, are not compatible with PS5. Use a PS5-compatible controller for testing instead.

Should I delete my save before reinstalling?
No. First start a new session or use another save slot while preserving the original. Delete unique save data only after you have established that it is involved and have made an appropriate backup.
Does clearing the PS5 cache fix a PS2 game?
Cache clearing is a Safe Mode maintenance option Sony associates with system-feature issues or performance drops. It is not documented as a universal PS2 emulator fix, so use it later and mainly when broader console symptoms exist.
When should I rebuild the PS5 database?
Consider it after game-level checks when several games or system features behave unusually. Database rebuilding recreates content information; it is not a guaranteed repair for one game’s scene or controller mapping.
Is resetting the PS5 a good first step?
No. A reset deletes user data. Back up first and reserve it for a final escalation after updates, save isolation, reinstalling, Safe Mode maintenance, and support guidance.
Who should I contact about a persistent PS2 title problem?
Contact that game’s publisher when one title still fails after the documented checks. For a Sony-published game, use PlayStation Support. Problems affecting multiple games can be sent to PlayStation Repairs.
What information should I include in a support request?
Give the title and edition, software versions, exact reproduction steps, save used, controller model and pairing method, error code, whether a new game works, whether other titles are affected, and a screenshot or video when possible.
The Bottom Line
Finish installation, update the game and PS5, test without the old save, and reinstall before using Safe Mode. Use a PS5-compatible DualSense rather than a PS2 controller, protect your saves, and never treat a reset as routine. Escalate a repeatable one-title fault to its publisher and broader failures to PlayStation Repairs with precise reproduction evidence.
