When mysql_secure_installation fails on a new server, the cause is usually one of three mismatches: it is using the wrong socket or TCP endpoint, the root account is configured for Unix-socket authentication rather than a password, or a password is being rejected by the active validation policy. Prove the connection endpoint first, then check the root account’s authentication plugin before changing credentials.

What mysql_secure_installation is supposed to do
Oracle MySQL describes the utility as an interactive hardening program. Its documented functions include setting passwords for root accounts, removing root accounts that can connect from outside the local host, deleting anonymous-user accounts, and removing the test database together with privileges for databases whose names begin with test_.

The normal command is:
mysql_secure_installationIt asks which changes to make. The utility can also offer to enable the validate_password component when that component is not installed. Once validation is active, passwords entered during the session are checked against its configured policy.

A failed connection is not the same as a rejected password. Treat transport errors, authentication-plugin behavior, and password-policy failures as separate problems.
1. Prove the server endpoint before changing anything
A running MySQL service can still be invisible to the utility if the program selects the wrong Unix socket, TCP port, host, or protocol. The utility supports --host, --port, --protocol, --socket, and --user; use them to match the endpoint that the server actually exposes.

Use your operating system’s service manager. On a system managed by systemd, common service names are mysql and mysqld:
sudo systemctl status mysql
sudo systemctl status mysqldOnly one of those names may exist. If the service is stopped, start it with the name shown by your distribution and inspect its journal for startup errors before running the hardening utility.
Find the configured socket and port
Log in through a method that already works, often the local administrative path, and ask the server which values it is using:
sudo mysql -NBe "SHOW VARIABLES WHERE Variable_name IN ('socket','port','bind_address');"If double quotes are inconvenient in your shell, run the same SQL interactively in the mysql client. The socket path may be something such as /run/mysqld/mysqld.sock, but do not assume that path; use the value returned by your server and service configuration. sudo ss -ltnp | grep 3306A server may listen only on a Unix socket, only on a loopback TCP address, or on a network address. Those choices affect which protocol can work and whether remote clients can reach it.

Test the exact endpoint with the regular client
Before invoking the hardening program, make a normal client connection through the endpoint you intend to use:
sudo mysql --socket=/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock
mysql --host=127.0.0.1 --port=3306 --protocol=TCP -u root -pReplace the socket path and port with the values you discovered. If the ordinary client cannot connect with a given endpoint, mysql_secure_installation will not succeed with it either. Fix the service, path, firewall, or account configuration first.
Pass the working endpoint explicitly
Once a client command works, give the same parameters to the utility:
mysql_secure_installation --socket=/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock
mysql_secure_installation --host=127.0.0.1 --port=3306 --protocol=TCPDo not combine a socket option with an intended TCP test. A Unix socket is local to the machine; a TCP connection uses the host and port and is subject to bind-address, firewall, and account host restrictions.
Recognize the common connection failures

Oracle bug records document both a wrong default socket and option-file interactions that redirect a local client to an unexpected endpoint. The practical lesson is to trust the endpoint that a successful client test proves, not the default printed by the utility.
2. Check option files that can override your command
MySQL clients read option files, including the [client] group. mysql_secure_installation also recognizes a [mysql_secure_installation] group. A stale host, user, protocol, or socket entry can silently change where the program connects.
Inspect the option files used by your installation and look specifically for those groups. Compare their values with the command you believe you are running. If a system-wide file points to an old socket or port, correct the file or override it explicitly on the command line.

The --no-defaults option can help prove that an option file is responsible, but it bypasses all normal defaults. Use it only when you understand which connection and security settings you are discarding, then supply every required endpoint option explicitly:
mysql_secure_installation --no-defaults --socket=/run/mysqld/mysqld.sockDo not treat --no-defaults as a permanent fix without documenting the settings that the normal configuration supplied.
3. Understand the root authentication mismatch
Many Linux package installations configure root@localhost with Unix-socket authentication. In that design, MySQL checks that the operating-system user connecting through the local Unix socket is authorized; it does not use a conventional MySQL password for that login.
This explains the apparently contradictory results:
sudo mysqlsucceeds because the operating-system root user is permitted through the socket.mysql -u root -pfails because a password is not the credential used by that account and plugin.- Entering a password during the hardening script does not necessarily convert an account whose plugin does not store password data.
- Socket-authenticated root is restricted to local Unix-socket access and cannot be used for remote logins.
Choose an access model intentionally

Keep a local-only administrative root
If the server is intentionally administered locally, leave socket authentication in place. Run administrative commands as the authorized operating-system user through the socket and create separate, least-privileged MySQL accounts for applications and routine operations. Test the exact local command you will use:
sudo mysql --socket=/run/mysqld/mysqld.sockCheck that the authentication plugin is present and active:
sudo mysql -NBe "SELECT User,Host,plugin FROM mysql.user WHERE User='root';"
sudo mysql -NBe "SELECT PLUGIN_NAME,PLUGIN_STATUS FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.PLUGINS WHERE PLUGIN_NAME='auth_socket';"The documented socket-authentication procedure verifies an ACTIVE plugin and confirms local login as the operating-system root user. If the plugin is not active, do not assume socket authentication can work; investigate the installed server components and package configuration.

Change root to password authentication only when required
If a specific local or remote administrative workflow genuinely requires a MySQL password, change the account deliberately with ALTER USER, then test the new method and its host restrictions. A typical account change has this form:
ALTER USER 'root'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED WITH caching_sha2_password BY 'A-long-unique-password';Use the authentication plugin supported by your server version and policy. Execute the statement from an already authorized administrative session, protect the password from shell history and process listings, and do not copy the example password. After the change, test a local password login through the intended protocol and verify that the application does not depend on root credentials.
Changing the plugin is different from merely answering a password prompt. Confirm the resulting row in mysql.user, check the account’s host value, and ensure that any remote access is limited by network policy and least privilege. Do not create a remote root exception simply to make the utility complete.
4. Know what the password prompt can and cannot do
The utility’s --password option is accepted but ignored as a way to provide a noninteractive secret. mysql_secure_installation prompts for a password whenever it runs. Supplying a value after --password will not turn the program into a password-file or unattended command.
For a controlled administrative run, start the utility interactively and enter the secret only when prompted. If automation is unavoidable, design it around a documented MySQL administration method with an appropriate secret store and a non-root account; do not place a root password in a command line, script, or world-readable option file merely to bypass the prompt.
5. Separate password-policy errors from connectivity errors
If the utility offers validate_password and a proposed password is rejected, the server has been reached and the component has applied its active policy. This is not evidence of a bad socket or a stopped service.
Read the rejection message, identify the active policy requirements, and choose a password that satisfies them. If the policy is inappropriate for the installation, review the component’s settings or decline enabling it after considering the server’s security requirements. Do not weaken a production policy just because a test password is convenient.
When troubleshooting, record which stage failed:
- Transport: the client cannot reach the selected socket or TCP endpoint.
- Authentication: the server is reachable but rejects the account, plugin, host, or credential.
- Validation: authentication is possible, but the new password fails the active component policy.
6. Answer the hardening prompts safely
On a normal internet-facing production server, the documented security intent is generally to remove anonymous users, disallow remote root login, remove the test database and its privileges, and reload the privilege tables. Read each prompt rather than blindly selecting the same answer every time.
Anonymous users
Remove anonymous accounts unless you have a documented, controlled reason to retain one. Anonymous entries can create confusing host matching and are not appropriate for a hardened production deployment.
Remote root login
Disallow remote root access for ordinary production administration. Prefer local socket administration or named accounts with only the privileges required for their task. If an exception is unavoidable, document the account, source networks, authentication method, monitoring, and removal date.
Test database and test_* privileges
Remove the test database and privileges for databases whose names begin with test_ when the server is being prepared for production. Keep them only on a development system that intentionally uses them, and record that exception so a later hardening pass does not destroy required fixtures.
Reload privilege tables
Accept the reload when you want the account and privilege changes made during the session to take effect immediately. If you decline a prompt, note exactly which security property remains unchanged and address it through a separate, tested administrative change.
7. Verify the finished configuration
Do not consider the run successful merely because the program reached its final prompt. Verify the resulting design with the same endpoint and account types that users and applications will use.

mysqlclient connection through the exact socket or TCP endpoint supplied to the utility. - Query the root account’s
pluginvalue and confirm that it matches the intended socket-only or password-based design. - If using
auth_socket, confirm the plugin status isACTIVEand test local login as the authorized operating-system root user. - Inspect account rows for anonymous users and unintended remote root entries.
- Confirm that the test database and
test_*privileges are gone when production hardening required their removal. - Test the application account separately. An application login test must not use root credentials, because root success proves nothing about the application’s grants, host pattern, or password.
For a password-based test, specify the protocol explicitly so you do not accidentally verify a socket login:
mysql --host=127.0.0.1 --port=3306 --protocol=TCP -u app_user -pFor a socket-only administrative test, specify the socket and operating-system identity explicitly:

The service is running, but the utility names the wrong socket
- Use a working administrative session to query the server’s
socketvariable. - Check option files for a stale
socketvalue in[client]or[mysql_secure_installation]. - Connect with the regular client using the discovered path.
- Rerun
mysql_secure_installation --socket=...with that same path.
sudo mysql works, but root -p does not
- Query
mysql.userto identify the root account’s plugin and host. - If the plugin is socket-based and local-only access is acceptable, keep it and use
sudo mysql. - If password authentication is a real requirement, execute a deliberate
ALTER USERchange from the authorized session. - Test the new login over the exact protocol required by the workflow, then remove any unnecessary remote-root path.
The utility reaches the server but rejects the new password
- Confirm that the error is a validation-policy rejection rather than
ERROR 2002or another transport error. - Use a password that meets the active
validate_passwordpolicy. - If the component was enabled during the run, document its policy and test a separate non-root account before deploying applications.
A concise preflight checklist
- Confirm the MySQL service is running.
- Identify the configured Unix socket, TCP port, and bind address.
- Connect with the regular client through the intended endpoint.
- Inspect
[client]and[mysql_secure_installation]option-file entries. - Check the root account’s authentication plugin and host.
- Decide whether root should remain socket-only or use a password.
- Run the utility with explicit endpoint options.
- Answer anonymous-user, remote-root, test-database, and privilege-reload prompts according to the server’s role.
- Verify the resulting accounts, plugin status, database removal, and application login separately.
