A Postfix message such as connect to mx.example:25: Connection timed out means the SMTP client did not complete a TCP connection or receive the remote server’s initial response before its connection limit expired. The default smtp_connect_timeout is 30 seconds. This is normally a reachability, routing, address-family, firewall, or provider-policy problem—not an SMTP password problem.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
Find the exact destination and port in the log, test connectivity from the Postfix server itself, check every outbound and inbound filtering boundary, and then choose either direct-to-MX delivery on port 25 or an authenticated relay on the provider’s submission port. Increasing the timeout without proving that the path works usually only makes the queue wait longer.

What a Postfix SMTP timeout actually means
Postfix’s smtp(8) client defines smtp_connect_timeout as “The Postfix SMTP client time limit for completing a TCP connection, and for receiving the remote SMTP server response.” Its documented default is 30 seconds. The setting is a limit for this client operation, not a promise that every remote mail server will answer within 30 seconds.
A log entry such as connect to mx.example:25: Connection timed out identifies the next-hop hostname and port. The failure happened before Postfix successfully exchanged SMTP commands. Authentication credentials, SASL settings, and message content therefore are not the first things to change.

Timeout, refusal, and authentication failure are different
| Log outcome | What it tells you | Where to investigate first |
|---|---|---|
Connection timed out |
No completed connection or timely remote response | Routing, address family, firewalls, egress policy, provider blocking, or a silent destination |
Connection refused |
The host was reached, but no service accepted the connection on that port | Destination service, port selection, listening state, or an active reject rule |
| SMTP authentication error | The connection and SMTP conversation progressed far enough to authenticate | Username, password, SASL mechanism, TLS mode, or provider account policy |
Do not treat these outcomes as interchangeable. A refusal proves more network progress than a timeout; an authentication error proves that the network path and SMTP service were reached.
Read the complete log before changing configuration
Start with the complete Postfix log line and its surrounding entries. Record the queue ID, destination hostname, resolved address if shown, port, and whether the message was deferred. Repeated attempts can reveal whether Postfix keeps selecting the same address or moves through a destination’s alternate MX records.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Destination: Note the exact hostname Postfix attempted, not just the recipient domain.
- Address: Capture the IPv4 or IPv6 address associated with the attempt.
- Port: Direct delivery normally targets TCP port 25; a relay uses the submission port documented by that provider.
- Queue state: A deferred message remains queued for a later retry rather than being accepted for delivery.
- Alternates: Compare attempts to every MX address. Postfix can try the next network address and defer delivery when no usable address remains.
Keep the queue ID while troubleshooting so that a DNS change, firewall correction, or relay change can be correlated with the next delivery attempt.
Step 1: Verify DNS and IPv4/IPv6 selection
Resolve the destination from the same server that runs Postfix. The result must be checked in the server’s actual network environment; a desktop or monitoring host may have different DNS views, routes, or egress rules.
Check all returned addresses
List the destination’s MX records and the A and AAAA records for each selected mail host using the DNS tools available on your distribution. Compare the addresses with the ones in the Postfix log. A domain can publish several MX targets, and each target can have both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses.
Test IPv6 separately when it appears in the log
If the timed-out attempt uses an IPv6 address, test IPv6 routing independently. A server can have a configured IPv6 address but no working default route, upstream filtering, or return path. In that situation IPv6 attempts can time out while IPv4 delivery works. Correct the IPv6 route or policy, or use the provider’s documented way to operate over IPv4; do not assume that changing SMTP credentials will affect address-family selection.

Step 2: Test TCP reachability from the Postfix host
Run tests from the Postfix server, not from another machine. This isolates local routing, NAT, cloud egress, and host-firewall behavior.
- Test direct-to-MX port 25: use an approved TCP test such as
nc -vz mx.example 25, replacing the host with the exact MX target from the log. - Test a provider submission endpoint: for a relay’s documented port, use the provider hostname and port with
openssl s_clientaccording to that provider’s TLS instructions. - Interpret the result: a timeout points to filtering or routing; a refusal means the host was reached but no service accepted the connection. A successful TCP or TLS response moves the investigation to SMTP protocol, TLS, or authentication settings.
- Repeat for alternate addresses: test the other MX targets and, where applicable, their IPv4 and IPv6 paths. One unreachable address does not prove that every destination is unavailable.
These tests do not send a message. They answer the narrower question of whether the Postfix host can establish the required network connection and receive a response.
Step 3: Inspect every firewall and egress boundary
A timeout can be introduced at any point between the Postfix host and the destination. Check the boundaries in order, and verify the actual policy with the organization that controls each one.
Host firewall
Review local firewall rules and outbound restrictions. An outbound rule that silently drops TCP 25 produces a timeout; an explicit reject may produce an immediate refusal. Check both IPv4 and IPv6 rule sets if the server uses both.
Cloud security groups and egress policies
Cloud providers commonly restrict outbound SMTP, especially TCP port 25. A 2026 troubleshooting guide from Policyd.org identifies outbound port-25 blocking by cloud providers as a common cause and recommends a smarthost when direct delivery is unavailable. Treat that as secondary guidance: confirm the restriction, exemption process, and permitted ports with your own provider rather than assuming every cloud has the same policy.
ISP, NAT, and gateway controls
Datacenter or ISP policies may block or rate-limit SMTP. A NAT gateway can have a separate egress policy from the instance, and an organization’s perimeter firewall may apply rules that are invisible on the Postfix host. Confirm that the translated source address is allowed and that return traffic is not dropped.

Destination-provider policy
The receiving network may silently discard connections from a source address, region, address family, or hosting range. Check its published SMTP policy and, where available, its abuse or postmaster contact. A destination-side block is different from a local port-25 restriction, so preserve the source IP, timestamp, and failed MX address when requesting clarification.
Direct MX delivery versus an authenticated relay
Direct delivery and relaying solve different operational problems. Direct delivery connects to each recipient domain’s MX on port 25. A managed or organizational relay accepts authenticated submission and delivers onward on your behalf.
| Decision factor | Direct-to-MX delivery | Authenticated relay (smarthost) |
|---|---|---|
| Outbound port | Normally TCP 25 to each recipient MX | Provider’s documented submission port, often a submission service rather than direct MX port 25 |
| Authentication | Usually no SMTP login to the recipient MX | Provider account credentials and its required SASL settings |
| TLS mode | Negotiated with each destination according to its capabilities and your policy | Use the relay’s documented STARTTLS or implicit-TLS mode |
| Provider controls | You manage retries, reputation, rate, and destination responses | The relay may impose rate, reputation, account, and abuse controls |
| Observability | Postfix logs each destination attempt directly | You see submission and relay responses; onward-delivery visibility depends on the relay |
| IPv4/IPv6 exposure | Your server must reach every MX over the selected address family | Your server only needs a working path to the relay; the relay handles onward connectivity |
| Operational cost | Infrastructure and reputation work remain yours | Any relay fees, quotas, or account requirements are set by the provider and must be checked directly |
If your provider blocks direct TCP 25 and will not remove the restriction, an authenticated relay is the normal operational alternative. It changes the destination, port, authentication, and TLS requirements; it does not make a broken local network path disappear.
Configure relayhost for the provider’s documented submission service
First obtain the relay’s exact hostname, port, authentication method, certificate requirements, and whether it expects STARTTLS or implicit TLS. Do not copy a port from another provider’s instructions.
STARTTLS submission
For STARTTLS, configure the relay using the provider’s normal SMTP submission endpoint and its documented security and authentication parameters. STARTTLS begins as an SMTP connection and upgrades the same connection after the server advertises the capability. The provider’s instructions determine the required Postfix TLS security level and SASL settings.
Implicit TLS (SUBMISSIONS, formerly SMTPS)
Postfix’s official parameter reference calls the implicit-TLS mode smtp_tls_wrappermode. Use it only when the provider explicitly requires SUBMISSIONS or SMTPS-style TLS, commonly associated with port 465. The documented example is:

smtp_tls_security_level = encrypt
smtp_tls_wrappermode = yes
relayhost = [mail.example.com]:submissions
smtp_tls_wrappermode = yes requires smtp_tls_security_level = encrypt or stronger. The brackets around the relay host suppress MX lookups in this documented form. Replace the example hostname and service with the provider’s exact endpoint; do not enable wrapper mode for a STARTTLS-only service.
Why the TLS stage matters
A TCP connect timeout occurs before SMTP commands. A timeout during TLS startup is a different stage and is governed by smtp_starttls_timeout. Read the log wording carefully: if TCP connects and the failure occurs during the TLS handshake, investigate certificates, protocol compatibility, inspection devices, and the provider’s required TLS mode rather than port-25 reachability.
Should you increase smtp_connect_timeout?
Usually, no. The 30-second default is a client limit, and a longer value does not unblock a dropped packet, denied egress rule, missing route, or unreachable IPv6 path. It can instead keep queue workers waiting and delay other deliveries.
| Situation | Appropriate response |
|---|---|
| TCP tests time out consistently | Fix routing, filtering, provider policy, NAT, or address-family selection; do not mask it with a longer timeout. |
| TCP connects, but a known slow provider documents a different requirement | Consider the provider’s recommendation and adjust the timeout deliberately, monitoring queue latency. |
| TLS handshake times out | Investigate smtp_starttls_timeout and TLS compatibility; changing the TCP connect limit addresses the wrong stage. |
| One MX address is unreachable but another responds | Resolve the address-family or destination-specific problem and let Postfix use the working alternate while the issue is corrected. |
Any timeout change should be tied to an identified network condition and tested against queue processing time. A larger number is not a reliability fix by itself.
Why mail remains queued after a timeout
Postfix does not discard a message merely because one connection attempt timed out. Its SMTP client can try the next network address on the MX list. If no usable address remains, delivery is deferred and the message stays in the queue for a later retry.
After correcting the route, firewall, address family, or relay configuration:
Best Value
- Confirm that the corrected endpoint passes the same TCP or TLS test from the Postfix host.
- Inspect the queue using the queue-management commands documented for your distribution and identify the affected queue IDs.
- Retry deferred mail with the normal Postfix requeue command for your distribution.
- Watch the log for a completed connection, SMTP response, and final delivery status rather than stopping at the first successful TCP handshake.
Do not repeatedly force retries while the path is still blocked; that creates noise without changing the underlying result.
A complete troubleshooting checklist
- Capture the full timeout line, queue ID, destination, address, and port.
- Resolve the destination from the Postfix host and compare all MX, A, and AAAA results with the log.
- Test IPv4 and IPv6 independently when both are available.
- Run
nc -vzagainst the exact MX and port 25, or useopenssl s_clientfor the relay’s documented TLS submission endpoint. - Check local firewall rules, cloud security groups, outbound policies, NAT gateways, ISP restrictions, and destination-provider blocks.
- Decide whether direct MX delivery is permitted or whether a smarthost is required.
- For a relay, match the provider’s hostname, port, authentication, and STARTTLS or implicit-TLS mode exactly.
- Use
smtp_tls_wrappermode = yesonly for a provider that explicitly requires implicit TLS, together withsmtp_tls_security_level = encryptor stronger. - Leave
smtp_connect_timeoutat its documented default unless a known slow path and provider guidance justify a change. - After correction, inspect and requeue deferred messages using your distribution’s standard Postfix queue tools, then verify the final SMTP delivery response.
Common mistakes that prolong the outage
Changing passwords first
Credentials are not evaluated until a connection and SMTP conversation exist. A pre-command timeout cannot be repaired with a new password.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Testing from a laptop
A laptop may use a different ISP, IPv4 preference, DNS resolver, or firewall. A passing test there says little about the Postfix host’s egress path.
Assuming port 465 is interchangeable with port 587
Port choice is part of the provider’s protocol contract. STARTTLS submission and implicit TLS use different connection behavior. Follow the documented endpoint and enable wrapper mode only when required.
Disabling IPv6 without checking the evidence
If the log shows IPv6, the durable fix may be the missing route or filtering rule. Correcting the path preserves a supported address family and avoids hiding a broader network defect.
Extending the timeout to several minutes
This can make a blocked route look merely slow and increases queue delay. Establish reachability first; tune a timeout only for a measured, documented slow service.
